Thanks so much for your videos! I am wondering why instead of ordering a replacement frame, couldn't you just cut a new piece of plywood using the old piece as a template? and then reattach the undamaged pieces?
@reclinerrepairguy4155Күн бұрын
@Teralorane - You can try that, sure. Since mass-produced frames are not generally good quality, however, you may find that attaching a new panel securely to the rest of the existing frame parts is problematic, and therefore, not worth the trouble.

thanks for the video, without it I would have never had the courage to attempt to replace my broken spring. I've followed your instructions but am struggling to stretch the spring.. I bought springs from Amazon, and wonder if they may be stiffer than the ones from La-Z-Boy.
@reclinerrepairguy4155Күн бұрын
@billymarkwell1105 - As a general rule, La-z-boy springs are not difficult to stretch. So yes, that could be the problem. A simple test you can do is to reinstall one of the original springs that's not broken. If it goes on easier, you are correct. If you are the original owner of the furniture, the springs are likely covered by warranty. And you should be able to get them for a nominal fee. I appreciate the information here. I have the very recliner you are describing on this video. I bought it from a friend who had only had it one year so it was like new. However I made the mistake you described in your tutorials and did not sit in it before purchasing it. It sits way back and my feet don't touch. I have two other non powered Lazy it's and love them. Rather than changing to different spring mechanism holes I opted to try raising the rear of the base boards on the floor. I started by using different thicknesses of wood. It brought the chair upright and perfect to sit in and does not affect the recline position at all. I ended up by making 1x5 shims placed under the legs. I already use a carpet under the legs because the chair is on a hardwood floor and don't want to scuff it. Just another option. I was going to sell the chair but now it sits just like my others. I don't have a tip over problem, because this power chair is leg support and recline, with. O lumbar or heating in the top. Thanks.

Set screw is out but handle only slides part way off. Allen screw 1986 chair. 9/28/24 10:10 am
@reclinerrepairguy41554 күн бұрын
@JamesPitmon - The set screw may have left a burr on the Drive Rod that you'll have to contend with. This burr is usually what prevents the handle from sliding off easily. Forcefully pulling while wiggling the handle back & forth can usually do the trick, though it may take several strong efforts. If that fails after many attempts, you can roll the chair over. Next, try to find a way to strike the inside of the handle with something like a short piece of wood dowel that's placed alongside the Drive Rod. Finding enough space to deliver these blows with a hammer is the difficult part. Good luck!

You didn’t talk about the smaller pilot hole in the rocker cam and how it should be oriented to the rear or how its original purpose was to secure a bolt used for the old style toggle. I can date this chair to the early 90’s. Again, the bolts aren’t stronger and will cause damage to the wood because the materials are different, metal and wood expand and contract at different rates, crushing the wood fibers around the metal. Then the bolts are loose. It’s best to replicate the original design as close as possible. The strength is entirely from the glue joint. The wood dowels are to eliminate shear. The wood screws are to secure after clamping until the glue dries. It’s the same reason you don’t secure raised panels with brads like a lot of “pros” think it’s ok to cheat, then the panels crack. Just by tightening those bolts you are crushing the wood fibers around. Soon as the room temp is raised the wood swells faster than the bolt. Summer comes, the A/C cools that bolt faster than the wood, no more shear prevention. BTW, 35 yr. furniture tech.
@reclinerrepairguy41554 күн бұрын
@tfguru1 - Sorry, I don't share your concerns. And for those that have them, they can simply reattach the Rocker Blocks with wood dowels, as shown in the video. As I mentioned in the video, I prefer to use bolts. I've seen many Rocker Block failures that were glued from the factory, including some that we re-glued from a previous repair. I've never seen a bolted repair that has failed. That's not to suggest that "bolted" repairs cannot fail. Anything's possible, especially if the repair is not done properly, or the forces put upon the Rocker Blocks are rather extreme.

I'm to small to make my manual recliner stay open. Is there any solution?
@reclinerrepairguy41556 күн бұрын
@tazgirlg5062 - There's no easy fix when the chair does not fit you properly. You can try putting a loose seat cushion or pillow on the seat. This may give you more height & leverage against the back. Or, you can try removing one of the mechanism springs. This may help with keeping the chair open, but may also make it harder to open & close the footrest.

@reclinerrepairguy415520 күн бұрын

@saule.270 - "Open" refers to opening & closing the footrest. If the footrest is open, it is extended away from the chair. If the Loveseat is a wallsaver, it will have rollers that move the seats. See this video to learn more -----> kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2rTqayQhd1osMk

My chair doesn't have the spring on the worm paw. Would that make the it slip off the gear. It doesn't look warn on any of the gear teeth or the paw.
@reclinerrepairguy415521 күн бұрын
@annhighfill7971 - Most chairs do not have the extra spring on the Pawl that's shown in the video. There's also a spring on the base of the Pawl that pushes it forward to engage with the Pawl Rack. That's usually all that's needed. The teeth or steps on the Pawl Rack wear over time, even though they may look fine. So, if your chair is several years old, the rack will have wear unless you never recline.

Boy, am I glad I came across you. I have, I believe, the exact same model as this chair. My mother and I both have one. Her is silent when rocking. Mine clangs and ahifta sideways a lot. I can't figure out what is wrong with mine. Maybe you can tell me. It's so obnoxious. Even teying to get up from the chair makes the worst kins of clanging like metal on metal, but something shifts. If my mother is next to me, she always comments how she hates the chair. Me too 😅
@reclinerrepairguy415525 күн бұрын
@CozetM - Step 1 is to check the rocking parts: Rocker Blocks, Rocker Springs, etc. to make sure nothing is loose or broken. The bad news is that even if everything is in good condition, rocker recliners are prone to making noise. The wax that La-z-boy uses on the Rocker Blocks can cause side-to-side movement. That's the "shift" you're referring to that can also generate noises.

Sir- I recently picked up a pair of Pinnacle glider recliners that I got off of marketplace. One them has a clunk/bump while gliding, and I'm having a hard time troubleshooting. Would any of your videos point me in the correct direction or do you have any ideas?
@reclinerrepairguy415526 күн бұрын
@tangerine3486 - I seldom worked on gliders, so I'm no expert. The swing arms (don't know the part name) are the first parts to check. They should be straight & not leaning or bent to one side. Also, the bearings should be smooth. Remove the back & turn the chair upside down to check smoothness by working the glider base by hand. If you hire an experienced repair tech to check it out, make sure they have experience with La-z-boy glider mechanisms.

Are there metal parts to substitute for the plastic ones?
@reclinerrepairguy415529 күн бұрын
@LS-zj7kv - La-z-boy has replaced the plastic Drive Toggle (the part that fits over the Drive Rod) with a metal part. It's called the Drive Toggle Clevis. Installing the metal Clevis part also does away with the Motor Clevis Mount, the plastic part that fits on top of the footrest actuator, as it's no longer needed. If you have those plastic parts & they're still working, you're fine. If/when they should fail, order the Drive Toggle Clevis kit to replace them.

@reclinerrepairguy4155Ай бұрын
@shannaciano1804 - Some recliners will do this by design. However, if it wasn't doing it before, here's what to check: Look for mechanism problems. It may take the form of broken, bent or loose parts, or the unit may have come loose from the chair frame. Also, check the base for those same issues.

I have a Motioncraft by Sherrill bought used but in like new condition about 6 years ago. I have not sat in it much until recently becoming my studio chair. It is dated 1997 a great high quality chair. It just stared sagging back in the upright position. As I have read In other comments I will most likely have to live with it since there is nowhere around here to get it fixed. I was just wondering if there might be an adjustment or something I can tight back in there. I’ve looked, nothing looks broken and what Phillips head screws are there are already very tight. I just can’t see where exactly the sag is originating from. Thanks for your videos this is interesting.
@reclinerrepairguy4155Ай бұрын
@GeorgiaRedMudPainter - Common causes for that issue include: Loose back frame, damaged or loosened hardware where the back attaches, problems with the mechanism -- bent, loose, etc. Also, when the back padding begins to flatten out, you'll be sitting back farther as well.
@GeorgiaRedMudPainterАй бұрын
@@reclinerrepairguy4155 Hey Thanks for the reply! The padding is great, there is definite play in the back rest from where it is supposed to be in the upright position and where it flops back about 5 inches now. I have it pushed against the wall so Incan work at my drafting table. It’s been a great sit for my slipped disk, but pulled out from the wall is only useful reclining as that 5 inch play is just enough to make sitting up a pain.
