These things are supposed to supply plug in loads only and are typically configured for IT (the earth terminal on the case if even present can be staked to the ground) operation (even when connected to the mains for charging since this appears to have a mains inlet for charging on it) and in several countries by law no earthing system at all. I class operation is perfectly safe as is. In order for a person to be shocked (or worse) a double fault must be present. Please do not listen to random people on the internet telling you to form a N/E link on these things but if you absolutely must you absolutely should be using an RCD downstream of the N/E link that will permanently (until manually turned back on) interrupt supply. If the person that told you to do this was ukelectricalsystems, which it appears to be the case, that guy is an idiot and I say that completely unreservedly. He has absolutely no idea about electrical in the UK let alone other parts of the world. In reality you shouldn't be taking advice from me either, beyond the sentence below. If you have any concerns regarding an earthing system for your inverter employ an actual licenced electrician to check the device for correct isolation (there are proper testing procedures in the Britt Standard) and advise you what is actually necessary to give you a safe configuration.

You have earth bond for faults because the mains income from the grid is referenced to ground, meaning any fault can return to the power source and trip a safety device, so the power wont go through a person that is also refenced to the ground. The inverter is not referenced to ground. But I think you device has linked the neutral to earth to get the same affect. I'm not sure if that's a good idea, just my two penny's worth.

I have my cabin inverter ground bonded on a 6 foot copper coated steel ground rod, along with the circuit panel, and my back up generator. All systems are for 240vac since I run 120v split phase to my breakers. Now, my van and RV systems both have solar with 120vac inverters, and because they are both mobile units, there cannot be an earth ground. The RV had a backup generator, no earth ground. (bond). Both have been in service for 17 and 14 years, consecutive, without a single problem. Someone once told me I needed to earth ground/bond my turbine pole. Wow! So I'm supposed to place a lightning rod next to my cabin in a remote desert environment? I've dealt with electricity since 1965 in the U.S. and yes, I've been bitten a number of times, but I am still here, because I take most precautions. My point is, there are many out there, and I'm not saying the guy who instructed you is one, but there are many out there who think they are the only ones who are correct. Don't listen to every joker on social media, research it yourself. I'm not saying ignore him. Just saying, check out his claims. The fact that your meter shows no ground/bond at the inverter, but shows everything OK through the power strip is proof that something isn't kosher.

Then the chap who did his safety certificate come back and passed his safety certificate. I watched some videos on 18th Edition UK Electric Regulations to find out more about earth bonding.

If you bought some copper busbar, 30 mm x 10 mm and drilled and tapped it for 8 mm metric than he would have a shorter path to the bus bar with equal length conductors, and that way you’ll get the true benefit of the equal length because then the resistance between each conductor will be very close. Don’t be afraid to add a lot of charge controllers in parallel either because they will work together and you’ll start to fall in love with Solar panels. I really enjoy seeing people build their own off grid solar systems it’s very rewarding. Thank you.

Your battery wires are too thin being 35 mm² they should be 120 mm² are in North America 4/0 heavy wire. You should also have class T fusing to protect from an over current condition. I have designed and installed battery-based solar systems for over 30 years and I have done some that are giant 12 V systems that have hundreds of amps of Solar input. Also, don’t block the top of the shunt because they get hot under lots of load otherwise looks like you’ve got a pretty clean system.

I've added to my 200ah 12v/1000w inverter system a 40A Renogy SCC and BT1 module, and planning to get 2 of the 220W Bifacial panels from them to set up on a moveable ground frame with some reflective panels behind so I can work out if a full solar system is even viable (I seriously doubt this). No time like the present to get it up and running for the winter solstice to see how bad it will be lol. I also bit the bullet and bought a "P1PE" P2500i 2.2Kw inverter generator this week with some 10L fuel cans and fuel additive. Can cycle the petrol as also use a chainsaw/strimmer/leaf blower in the garden. Idea being if needs be the genny can be used to run some stuff like washing machine etc and charge the batteries through the day if we get any significant outages. Part of me wishes I'd gone 24V now for the solar aspect, but then with 12V I can transpose most of this to a van if I wanted to further down the line...

@daz I suggest you transition to 48V system. First is mainly due to safety concern, 1300AH of battery capacity is no joke. Second, large amperage is very cost inefficient, you can do more on the 48V system whereby you can maximize the full potential of your energy storage. 3rd you can recycle all your big AWG wires in 48V system giving less resistance therefore you can maximized your output energy.

Totally new to this game- I've this week bought 2x Renogy 12v 100ah LiFePo4 batteries(200ah in parallel), a Renogy 20a AC charger and a Renogy 1000w inverter with inbuilt "transfer switch" (all sitting in the corner with cables, crimpers, lugs, DC circuit breaker, Renogy shunt and monitor, MRBF fuses/holders) waiting for me to decide where to put it). My system is purely to run the fridge, TV, stereo and PC for a planned outage (they're coming, the leaflets campaign is them telling us load shedding is here -and some of my missuses NHS elderly vulnerable clients been told they're getting generators) and to back that up have ordered a P1PE 2.2kw inverter generator and some decent size fuel cans and petrol stabiliser. Site generators are cheaper/more powerful but guzzle the petrol in comparison without any "Eco" setting I've looked into solar and here in the Scottish Highlands when I'd need it most it's a dead loss, thus "damage limitation" with this system.... Must admit a big box of candles/matches and a new Scrabble board/pack of cards was an alternative lol.... In an ideal world 48v would be the way to go with 3000w inverter and 100ah rack mounted batteries, but as I say, solar 5 months of the year where I am is a disaster. Got friends out in Tenerife and even leaving their solar panels at "winter tilt" they get 6 solar hours a day every day of the year almost (but then they have major issues with water supply, I certainly don't!!) If your batteries are lead acid doesn't that mean your batteries are effectively halved to 650ah as you cannot discharge below 50%?? Renogy advised me to set the alarm for 20ah so getting 180ah for £350 from 2 small, light batteries (got them on an ebay sale from Renogy). I'm not going beyond 2, my brain is frazzled enough from 10 days crash course in all this and still feel like I know so little!!! Maybe another 12v system just for lights and 12v appliances might be a good idea too.... Or could maybe take from this system, might need to investigate that rather than losing capacity running everything through the inverter to 240v? Oh and Will Prowse and "Cleversolarpower by Nick" if you haven't already watched their channels.... And good job getting further towards self sufficiency👋. I put this off for too long but from what I gather from Will Prowse's latest video today this is the cheapest batteries have ever been (He got one for $155 and said they once were $900 not that long ago !!)

@@Bazza1968 Amazing news Bazza great job. I started out with a 30A charger but i had to send that back as it would take days to charge my battery bank. Then i had to get the 90A battery charger. You can add 12v light to the system you have now. I am doing a new video in the week so you will see what you will need on the video. Check out my garden solar lights i use in the house that's what i use in the kitchen and bathroom works great. I have been running them for over 2 years now. When i need more light i turn my 12v lights on it's great.

@@daz.r1994 Turned it off last night , disconnected then separated the batteries. This morning each took just 10-15 mins to get from 13.5 to 14.5 and the green light. I reconnected them and tried charging again (it dropped to 14.0 must be heading down to the "float" setting) but putting the charging cables on the -/+ve of just one battery and they both started charging up ok watching off the multi-meter. Maybe some overthinking using the +ve on one and -ve on the other was locking it up or confusing the BMS... Gonna run it down tomorrow and see what happens...Will keep an eye out for the 12v lighting vid!

@@Bazza1968 Have a chat with G Bear you will see him in the comments. Or check his KZbin channel. Bear know a lot about your batteries and the BMS. I think what i have seen your 13.5 to 14.0 is great. My lead acid batteries charge to 13.5 then drop to 13.3 to 13.2 it stays like this if i don't use the power. Let me know how many hours you get out of your 180 Ah batteries when you run the batteries down.

Thank you. I will do a video in the week and put all the places i got cables, lugs and circuit breakers and the tools i used. Hope that's ok for you.

Hi. Just thought i would sort this out for you. As you may be wanting to get the job done now. I picked my parts up on eBay. JS-Trading UK. Cable lugs all sizes. MRO Supermarket. Circuit breaker 30-300 Amp. Fuse reset. DC 12v-48v. MK-Deal. Battery starter welding cable. 16 / 20 / 25 / 35 / 50mm. 110-170 Amp red / black. Auto car. I hope this can get you started on your build. I will be doing a video in the week with all the places i got the other parts from to build my solar system.

Why did you choose 12 volts instead of 48 volts or 24 volts? The efficiency loss from the high amperage is a concern. Lovely set up by the way
@daz.r1994Ай бұрын
Thank you. I went with the 12 volts system as i am new to solar power. This is my first time building a battery bank. I will be using a 12v fridge freezer and light. I have the 3000w Inverter just for power tools and computer. For cooking and heating I use paraffin.

Very nice job! Save up and switch to LiFePo4 batteries and equipment and get more Ah with less batteries and longer life.

Thank you G Bear. May be one day I will switch over to LifePo4 batteries. I got these batteries at a great price at the time. The battery charger i have is suitable for lithium batteries.

@@daz.r1994 Yeah, the prices on LiFePO4 batteries have come down over the years, and now you can buy them for about the same price as AGM batteries, but get more power and piece of mind.

How was the result?

Hi. Amazing result as good as you buy from the shops. The 12 days work well. I had to fit a 12v fan for the first 2-3 days to keep the smell of garlic down.
