I’m getting ready to take on the trail in November 2025… you mention in this video that it’s early Fall… October? What months did you hike the MST?
@JeniferJourneys
@JeniferJourneys 25 күн бұрын
I started around September 8th and finished at the end of October. I biked and paddled some of the sections east of here. So yes in this video it would have been either late September or early October. That's exciting you'll be out there next year! It's a cool trail! 😎

My gosh yes. Rain gear good grief. Water is just such an inexorable force. Pretty much everyone has conceded defeat but I'm trying a light weight rain suit in conjunction with an umbrella to reduce exposure and prolong wetting out. Managed to get it down to 15oz total. I don't know. Ill try it.

Ha, yep. I still haven't found my perfect solution. I've considered the umbrella option but never tried it. You'll have to let me know what you think.

Hmm. I don't think you can go wrong either way. I'm sure Abisko is a pretty finish. I believe we chose sobo for some logistical travel reasons. We were also going to be finishing near the end of the season and thought the weather might be gentler further south. If I did it again, I might hike nobo just to see it differently.

Mid-century, we courted on Water Rock Knob: no walkway, no pavement, no structures, just a gravel parking area. It was private especially at night. A ranger came one time, blinked his lights at us, and resumed his patrol. The world was wilder then. I had to lay her ashes there 60 odd years later. Good grief, I miss her something fierce - her and her mountains.

Water Rock Knob is where she first kissed me. Also, where she claimed me as her own. Also, where her ashes rests now, 60 odd years later. Wonderful mountain girl, then wife for those 60 odd years. I miss her something awful, miss her mountains, miss her voice, miss the exuberance, the straight and narrow that she lived. What I would not give to see her again.

I'm thinking of walking this section. What shoes would you recommend? What about drinking water? Thank you!
@JeniferJourneys
@JeniferJourneys 4 ай бұрын
Shoes are such a personal gear choice it is hard to make good recommendations. What's good for me might not work at all for someone else. Ideally something you’ve tested and know that you can walk comfortably in for hours. Also, make sure you have a good fit. Either too small or too big can cause issues, but I know I've suffered more in shoes that turned out to be too small. You'll be on a mixture of pavement and trail. I used trail runners for the whole trail, an older pair of La Sportiva Mutants. I carry a Sawyer filter for water and had lots of opportunities to fill up.

It's pretty well marked in most places. I did use an app that I believe was just called the "MST" app. I'm not positive, but I don't think it exists anymore. However, FarOut has now added the MST to their selection of thruhikes. FarOut has been a very reliable app for me on other trails.

Jenifer - I know exactly where you were when those views opened up. What you probably did was take a left (north) on the Green Mountain trail at the 4-way intersection, which takes you to the Fork Ridge viewpoint that overlooks Mt. Hardy and the western Middle Prong wilderness. Since there are no trail blazes because they aren't allowed in designated wilderness areas (I never understood that - confusing trail junctions just mean more manways and unofficial trails, which is worse for the plants and soil erosion), it's easy to get turned around. When I was there, I went there on purpose, following my Gaia app. To stay on the MST, you should stay straight and then at the next trail intersection, make a left and stay straight. It's kind of hard to describe though, so it's probably best to look at a Gaia or other hiking app. That's how I kept from getting lost. Anyway, you probably figured it out by now and at least you got to enjoy some beautiful views!
@JeniferJourneys
@JeniferJourneys 4 ай бұрын
Hi! Yes, your description sounds pretty accurate to my experience. It was definitely the lack of trail markers in the wilderness area, (and also some day dreaming while walking and a lack of attention to where I was going 🤪) that got me turned around. But I figured it out. Happy Trails!

I’ve watched every one of your videos. Thanks for a superb effort. I normally get bored when viewing such a longer series, but I guess your personality had me hooked. I’ll be doing the MST in April and try to watch every Vid out there to glean even a smidgin of knowledge about the trail. Still haven’t decided on an Eastbound or Westbound trek. I’ll be 80 y.o. for the hike so westbound may give my legs/body that extra build for the mountains. I Thru-Hiked the AT in 1998, but I’m pretty sure the old frame isn’t quite the same! THX again for a great rendition. VIKING AT98

I hope it's going great! I'm so inspired by people like you who continue to do things like this in to their 80s. Incredible. I hope I can be as tough when I'm that at age! Best of luck out there! Whichever way you decided to go will be a rewarding finish. Happy Trails!

The friends of the MST website has lots of info, and since I've done the trail, FarOut (a phone app) had added the MST to their selection. I've used the app for other trails and it's been immensely helpful.
