Great informative video Tamlyn. I have seam tape flexible T15 is this the same as forming tape? Such great tips on interfacing. I didn’t know the difference between woven and non woven interface. I thought is was to do with stretch fabric and woven fabrics 😮 🙊

A good way to learn how to quilt. You could use your practice pieces for lining bags or for other craft projects. My SIL is the quilter in my family. She has made lap quilts for each family member. I tried quilting years ago and made four blocks that were to be made into a wall hanging. Instead of that, I made four pillows out of the blocks. Happy sewing, Tamlyn.

As the previous comment says your triangles doesn't go right up the edge, the distance should be quarter of an inch, which is your outside seam allowance. Your block looks really good for a first try, and it is definitely a learning curve after dressmaking. Just take your time and enjoy.

Lovely block! The red really works well. The points will come out OK because you have a quarter inch seam all around the edge.

Very well done, you have to start at the beginning. Awesome job

You need thr diagonal on a half square triangle to be a quarter of an inch from the corner. Then when you sew them it takes into account your seam. So your blocks are mainly ok

Really enjoying this series of videos Tamlyn. Great tips on interfacing and forming tape. I'm swithering on the pocket flaps. Think it comes down to whether you like them as a design feature and will actually use the pockets x

Do you do block fusing? I like to do it if I have a lot of small pieces to interface. It seems to make things easier for me.

I always let my woven fusible interfacing g soak in very hot water for twenty minutes and the. Air dry. It does not damage the glue and pre-shrinks it. I used to do the same with the non woven fusible as well.

Great episodes. Such useful information even if you are not making the jacket. Just swapped to woven interfacing and it is so much better than the non- woven. Like you would not go back. Looking forward to all the episodes

Sometimes it can just be the quality of the fabric/dyes used as to why you get those lines. With Rainbow fabrics and other sellers online who are similar you never know where they've come most of the time, or how they've been made. They are cheap for a reason unfortunately so you never really know the quality. I've bought a so called viscose jersey from them to find it was 100% polyester. It was also on pound fabrics with the composition 😢

Thank you for the book recommendation. The timing was perfect as I’m hoping to go to Waterstones tomorrow for a new read so I’ll definitely try and find it! Like you, time to read is hard to find .. I try and squeeze in a chapter of two before bed. I’ve not tried the Style Arc Hope dress yet but I love yours. I might have to copy yours in the gorgeous Sew Haley Jane fabric which I love! Thank you xx

I love to use the stay tape as well and it’s great to use on the shoulder seams of stretchy fabrics so they don’t stretch out during wear. My machine is not great when I sew a straight stitch on a single layer either, it sort of puckers the fabric unless I hold it really taught. I also prefer woven interfacing any day. But I would skip interfacing on such a thick dense fabric as denim twill, except for the front facings where you’re making buttonholes or putting snaps. It is tricky to avoid washing streaks on dark fabric but my best advice is to soak it like you did, but also choose a program for delicates, very little aggitation and lots of water. And a very low spin.

Good morning and I pray that you are having a really good day. In Minnesota where I live, we have less than 2 inches of snow on the ground, but it is very cold, less than 10 degrees and sometimes even less than zero. Minnesota is a state that thrives on snow for winter enjoyment, but so far we don't have much. From many if the bloggers who live in England all say that it is very cold. Good thing that we don't live somewhere that is this cold all year around. The blouse you wore in the fist part of this video was beautiful and the colors were perfect for you. Where did you get the fabric, and what pattern is it? Also, when I am going to sew something with denim, I always wash my fabric no less than 2 times. The first wash, I pour a liter if Coke Cola with laundry soup, the 2nd time I just wash as a normal load. By putting the coke in the wash, it softens up the denim, and does make it fad slightly but not much. I use this method if I am sewing something from chambray, 6oz or even 10-11 ounce denim. Watching all your videos gives me so much enjoyment as you are very creative, excellent sewer, wonderful mother to that precious son, Taylor. I remember when you were pregnant with him and can't believe he is getting so old. Children are gives from God and you were blessed with such a beautiful son. Take care now, can't wait to see next video on this gorgeous jacket. You and the Northern Sewl Sisters really have a special bond that anyone would love to have - true sisters in every way!!!!!!😀❤

Such a good tip on the formbond instead of stay stitching,. You mentioned lining. I am making a fully lined coat and I had just been dreading doing the lining. I am definitely going to use my stay tape. It never even occurred to me.

Curious how you manage the grain line when you are cutting out. I am forever measuring rack piece to the edge to make sure it is on grain but I didn’t even see a measuring tape in your vlog. How do you manage???
@StitchedUp2 күн бұрын
Completely agree over the use of stabilising tape instead of staystitching, I find when I try to staystitch it puckers the fabric slightly, you don't get this with the tape, far easier to use

Thanks for sharing your preparation and useful information about interfacing. I’m undecided about the pocket flaps, so not much help. What are you using for lining them? I like the look of them in the tester photos, but if you decide not to add them, I think your jacket will still look great. Happy sewing, Tamlyn.

Is it normal to leave the detergent cap in the washer in UK? Hello from Michigan!
@alicehuber19042 күн бұрын
To avoid washer issues, always put the color catcher into a zippered, mesh "lingerie" bag. I didn't and had to call washer repair person to get the color catcher that got caught inside the washer, and blocked the drain. Hello from Michigan, USA.

For the pocket flaps… how often will you use the pocket? If you use it a lot no flaps. If you don’t use them… they’re kinda cute.

I use the Prym Forming tape too after seeing Lauren use it. Was not able to find a comparable product in the US that has that stitch in it, so order it from Minerva. I really like it and find that it works well for quickly stabilizing a neckline particularly on pattern pieces that have a large bias cut. No chance of stretching out than when under stitching. I used it on some stretch waffle knit when making the Pearl Cardigan. I WISH I had used it when I used that same type of stretch waffle knit to make my husband a long sleeve pullover. Even though I went straight from attaching the shoulders to putting in the neckband and was so careful handling it - that neck opening stretched wide enough that Charlie did not want the shirt.

I have pre washed my fabric I have my pattern pieces cut out. I chose not to go with the pocket flaps but I probably won't put into my pockets anything of great value. I am yet to cut the pieces and interface them. I think it depends on where you want to wear the jacket. I.e. you wear it on the train journey somewhere and you store an electronic train ticket with uploaded value on it in your pocket. Is it safe? Do you want pocket flaps on both the upper hand lower pockets or just lower? I have tried to correct the gramatical error referring to pockets three times but it will not work.

Thanks for reading my comment. I still think your machine looked very clean! 😊 Edited to add that I also often use that kind of interfacing instead of stay stitching. For example I have used it when making a wrap dress like the SOI Eve dress. It's really helpful to prevent the neckline from stretching. Thank you so much for your explanation about woven interfacing. I might try it when I run out of my current one. I have stretch interfacing and it's really lovely to use and handle.

I’m really enjoying the pace of this series Tamlyn. Sometimes sewing feels like a rush to the finished garment so we can wear it or have something ready to record but taking time to enjoy the details of the garment making process brings a lot of joy into sewing. Thanks for reminding me to enjoy sewing more 👍🩷😍

Another great video, Tamlyn. With thick fabric like that I would leave off the pocket flaps - may look too bulky and could be a nightmare to get through all the layers. Very impressed with the tape. Definitely going to try that!

I ordered some woven interfacing for my coat (not yet in progress) and the difference to non-woven is amazing. I think I'll be using woven in future (unless there's something where non-woven is better, but not sure about that). Oh and I did that 'put the interfacing on the wrong way round' the other day! At least I had a pressing cloth, thank goodness, but my pressing cloth is now ruined! I used non-woven on that occasion as it is only for the muslin for the coat. I sometimes block fuse my fabric.
