The Sith had evolved in the thousands years they were hiding in the shadows whereas the Jedi had grown stale, too set in their ways and overconfident in the fact their greatest enemies were defeated. The sith not only used this time to perfect sith power and skills but skills and tactics of the Jedi also ( know thy enemy ) giving the sith a superior advantage when they return. Indeed in that thousand years the sith evolved so much that a apprentice could be more than a match for most Jedi masters and the sith could walk amongst the Jedi without their enemies sensing their presence.

@@Yabuturtle If your planning on reading the Darth Bane novels don't read any further. . . . It was actually Darth Bane (not the jedi) who defeated the brotherhood of the Sith (The Sith order of that time}. Darth Bane realised the Sith had strayed to far from the dark side (much like the jedi strayed from the light during the prequals era) and as a result had become weak. He recognised the Sith order needed to start again. He destroyed all other remaining Sith of that era by tricking them into using the Thought Bomb which destroyed them (and a few jedi). He then retreated to the shadows on a quest to learn the teachings of the ancient, more powerful Sith, took an apprentice and started the rule of 2.

The point here is that even if Yoda killed Sidious, he still would have lost. The galaxy had truly been sold against the Jedi at that point, and even with Sidious gone, they would have hunted him down and eventually killed him. The Sith shaped the entire situation of the galaxy against the Jedi order, and to Yoda, the answer to that was to retreat and bide his time. By the time the Rebel Alliance came along, and the people cried out for freedom, the situation was shifting, and it was time to prepare Luke.

@@tristanh2282 well most important aspects of the Star Wars story are plot points. Kenobi and Anakin couldnt have lost any battles in the prequels or clone wars. Luke had to win too. He's the hero, you cant just let vader win in the end... The beauty is understanding why those circumstance had to happen within the realm of the story, not our world. Using our world to explain a part of the story is the antithesis of story telling and creative expression.

Yoda did defeat him in lightsaber part of fight . In novel yoda disarms sidious . Sidious realizing yoda was the better duelist fell back on his force powers to create distance . Yoda fell a far distance and lost his lightsaber in fight . Plus he sensed clonex coming and had to leave.

Sidious is not a Lightsaber duelist. He just uses his overwhelming speed in force to bolster his saber combat. Sidious can't fight .

The clones were really the final factor in Yoda's retreat. They weren't just run of the mill clones either, but members of the elite 501st legion, and Chancellor guards (so the best of the best). We saw in Ep3 how effective they were at killing Jedi during Order 66. Now those 3 against Yoda by themselves, I believe he still would have prevailed easily, but when your abilities are already being utilized at their absolute limits fighting Sidious, 3 elite troopers on top of that is more than enough to overwhelm you. If not for the clones and not for that massive fall he took (and advanced age obviously), I think he could have prevailed against Sidious in the duel. If you look at the end of the duel when Sidious blasts him with lightning for the last time you see Yoda is in quite a bit of pain from it at first as he faces away wincing, as opposed to when Dooku blasted him and he shrugged it off like nothing, so its clear Sidious is giving him everything he's got (and that Dooku was nowhere near as powerful as Sidious) but eventually he gains control, looks Sidious back in the face with full confidence as he clearly takes control of the energy stream and is pushing it all back into Sidious (and the look or fear on Sidious's face is also telling). Had that not resulted into a blast that shot them both away and Yoda into that massive fall, I believe Yoda would have eventually taken him with sheer force abilities. But in the end, as the books explain, it was the will of the force that the Jedi would fall so in the end there was no way for him to win. But if not for the will of the force (and the other factors), Yoda I believe could have eventually prevailed.

I know it's annoying. But think of it like cup stacking. You know how it's organized and you know how it ends up. Start with the main idea, expand on it in one way. Go back to the main idea and then expand on it in a more specific way. Nothing new for his channel and I know this specific idea he has explained before, but it's not exactly an orthodox way of trying to articulate a hypothesis and final conclusion. Don't blame him too much; if you get it, you get it. If you don't get it at first, he makes room to expand upon it. It all depends upon perspective.

I remember the duel and they seemed evenly matched. At the end both were blown backward by their intense duel. It was Yoda who retreated from battle saying he had failed. But I say he failed because he quit. He didnt finish, Obiwon didnt finish, and 25 years later they left it to Luke to clean up their mess. Training Luke to kill Vader and the Emperor alone. Given 20 years to learn from their mistakes and Yoda and Kenobi decide to turn Luke into a weapon, hide Vaders identity from Luke, and expect Luke to succeed were they had failed. Luke chose his own path when he broke from Yoda and Obiwans plan, and facing Vader before he is ready. Luke survived the encounter and grew stronger learning from his failure. Something Obiwan and Yoda had not. Luke followed his heart, something Qui Gon Jin would have approved of, broke from the Jedi dogma and listen to the will of the Force. I respect the Jedi ideals what the Jedi upheld and what they tried to do but they lost their way. The Force created the chosen one to bring balance to both sides of the Force. Anakin destroyed both the Jedi out hatred and the Sith out of love. Anakin leveled the field and fulfilled his destiny. Yoda could not see, Obi Won could not see, Anakin was not dead, Vader is just another name, and whatever he called himself, Anakin loved his son with all the longing and shame he carried for his dead wife. Love saved Anakin from dying as Darth Vader. Love is always the answer. Sorry Yoda..

The novelization showed that the Sith adapted since Darth Bane implemented the rule of two and played the long game while the Jedi slacked off. That's what I love about the novelization, because it gives a deeper analysis that couldn't be achieved in the movies

Windu bested Palpatine, mostly because of Vaapad and that makes him extremely overpowered when fighting dark siders. Yoda and Palpatine were roughly equal so it could have gone either way. Sometimes styles and techniques can determine victories rather than just raw power. It's implied that Yoda is more powerful when Obi Wan said "Even Yoda doesn't have a midichlorian count that high.", but Windu is the better duelist against dark side adepts because of his style. Dooku beat Obi Wan and lost to Anakin but Obi Wan beat Anakin. Mostly because he trained him and his soresu form counters Anakin's very well and he had a little luck on his side. Soresu tends to work better against Djem So than Makashi.

Adding to this, not disagreeing with you though. It was stated that Palpatine let windu beat him because he already had it planned out and manipulated the entire event. If windu and Palpatine did their best lightsaber duel, i think vaapad would have helped windu win, but like with yoda Palpatine would fall back on force abilitys and ultimately defeat windu. As for why obi wan defeated Anakin/Vader, it was of course the high ground. Obiwan himself stated that Anakin was the superior duelist and that if they had continued on even ground he would eventually fall to vaders blade. Although yes obiwans lightsaber form was the perfect counter towards anakins djem so variant of form 5 and the countless hours of dueling practice they had helped him greatly. In the end, Anakin fell to arrogance and lost his limbs

@@emperornemesis-4179 Lucas had kind of mentioned that Windu had beaten Palpatine in the duel but soon feigned weakness when he was trying to get Anakin's sympathy. He didn't really have a back up plan in case Anakin didn't take the bait and was a foot away from getting cut by Windu. He was kind of betting everything on it. He knows Anakin is still conflicted and even after saying he could save Padme and help Anakin, if you noticed, his hand was twitching a little, getting ready to pull out his saber, in case Anakin really was going to attack. Although not sure what the novels had mentioned but at least in the commentary, Lucas mentioned Windu beat Palpatine fair and square at least from what I have seen. Vader would have beaten Obi Wan eventually but lasted way longer against him because of his soresu. He had a high ground and that gave him an advantage so he had a little luck there on his side.

Shatterpoint and Vaapad gave Windu a huge advantage but he bested Palpatine with a lucky kick to his chin. If Palpatine were younger and tougher, he wouldn't have gone down so easily. Maybe being in politics and living a deliquate lifestyle for many years softened him. As for Yoda, he relies solely on the Force to keep his acrobatic ataru style which drains his energy. Plus the age factor, a long fight would've weakened him to the point where Palpatine would gain the upper hand. Qui Gon used the same style. The long duel with Maul tired him, slowed him down and he eventually fell to Maul's quick thrust. Yoda would have ended up the same.

If his prime was as vader, then he was not close to as strong as sidious as his powers were limited by his cyborg suit. Windu did beat Sidious in a lightsaber duel, but Sidious is not really a duelist. Most of the time he prefers to use his force ability.

I've always felt Stover's novel overcomplicated the Sidious-Yoda duel into a symbolic almost fatalistic affair like something you might read in Greek mythology, a duel one was doomed to lose no matter what sort of like Achilles-Hector in the Iliad. If that was the case, the movie conveyed it poorly. The movie suggested to me it was a duel between two fairly evenly matched combatants either one who could have prevailed if one of them was a split second to slow with their blade. I would have guessed the duel could have gone either way from watching it. Just my humble opinion.

It makes perfect sense though. The Sith only changed masters when the apprentice became powerful enough to kill their master. Meaning that each and every new master there was, they were continually getting stronger and stronger. While on the other hand, the Jedi enjoyed a more peaceful life, acting as peacekeepers.

Sidious was the most powerful Dark Side user of all time so yeah. Mace Windu hat the advantage of his very special combat skills and would have won (at least in a lightsaber duel). Anakin and Luke had the potential to surpass Sidious in the Force itself (Luke did in Legends later, he was pretty much the most powerful Force user of all time).

I feel yoda came to realize that he had lost faith in the lightside of the force because he and the other jedi did not really give Anakin a chance. Had they not been blinded by politics they would have trusted the force when it was foreseen that Anakin was the chosen one. So giving up on trust and faith in the force they had lost their true purpose and no longer had the connection with the force they once had.

For one thing, the modern Jedi haven’t had any experience dealing with the Sith. The last time the Jedi had encountered the Sith was before even Yoda’s time. So, Yoda had no idea just how powerful Sidious could be. In fact, it was his hubris that allowed him to underestimate Sidious.

Jedi abandoned following of the Force at some point and instead became slaves of Republic. Plagueis and Sidous together pushed The Force itself towards the darkness and met no opposition, because there were no Jedi pushing Force towards The Light. After Plagueis and Sidious did that Jedi's ability to foresee the future got clouded. That's why Yoda said "The Dark Side clouds everything". All Jedi felt that, but they didn't have a clue what to do about it. At that point The Force or destiny itself was sided with Plagueis and Sidious against The Jedi. Siths could foresee the future and The Force guided them, but Jedi didn't know what to do.

The only person Vader betrayed was Anakin. Every one else ( not Padme, nor the Twins) was a means to end. Jedi are trash. They sent flesh and blood to fight , metal and oil.

In the novelisation, Yoda is fatiguing in the fight and reaches out in the force to feal how much fatigue has affected Sidious, Yoda is shocked as he feels Sidious is actually getting stronger still. While it seems likely Yoda would lose, he is written to come to the understanding that it isn't his destiny to defeat the Sith and he retreats so that he may assist later.

A point all loreists should use. Pre rule of two they called themselves with and post rule of two aptly named rot anything pre Bane needs to be named proto sith or dark jedi as they weren't true sith just dark Jedi with delusions of grandeur (and galactic conquest). Post RoT can be called sith as they followed the tenets of patience, cunning, and turning the republic into the jedis enemy.

I know it's not what you're saying hearing but you made me think - what if another aspect was how focused the dark and light sides were? The dark side was 100% focused on their objective and their order. The Jedi, as we have seen, had lost their way even by Ep1. By Ep3 they had also become soldiers, policemen, rather than the focused holy men they should have been. Not only was the order not unified, even if they had been they still wouldn't understand their purpose in the galaxy.

I feel like bringing balance to the force also has to do with bringing balance to the republic, which had grown corrupt, overly bureaucratical, and out of touch. In some ways, the republic had become a danger to itself, or would fold against a powerful outside threat. None of these problems would have been fixed if Yoda had defeated Palpatine, in fact, these problems may have gotten worse since the republic's hubris could have grown even further thanks to their jedi saviours. Palpatine's reign could thus be seen as a necessary evil, which would reshape the republic into a form that could better guard against the flaws of the old republic.

Yoda and Darth Sidious were too evenly matched in terms of their abilities with a lightsaber and their skills with the Force; although, I would argue that Yoda is slightly more powerful than Darth Sidious. However, the real turning point of the duel was Yoda realizing that even if he did kill Darth Sidious, the victory would be in vain as the Sith had already succeeded in winning the war against the Jedi. While the Jedi drifted into decadence, arrogance, and corruption; the Sith learned from their mistakes, studied the Dark Side of the Force in its entirety, grew in strength and knowledge, and hid from the Jedi and the Republic until they were strong enough to emerge and were beyond recognition by the Jedi who would be completely unprepared to deal with their reemergence. Darth Sidious was the product of 1,000 years of preparation by the Sith for that very moment. Finally, the true revenge of the Sith wasn't the destruction of the Jedi as a formal organization, it was their success in turning the Galaxy and its inhabitants against the Jedi Order, the very beings the Jedi swore to protect and guide. Therefore, had Yoda succeeded in killing Darth Sidious, he would not be seen as a savior by the people of the Galaxy but an enemy, an assassin, another piece of evidence proving that the Jedi had planned to take power over the Republic all along. The Galaxy would seek to avenge Darth Sidious/Palpatine and see that the legacy of the Sith live on.

Something I think everyone missed, it was not 1 millennia of planning but 3! Bane got his philosophy not from the brotherhood of darkness but a holocron or Darth Revan HIMSELF! Now I've played KoToR and searched the Lehon temple for dozens of hours to see if it was in there and Lucas arts had put the holocron into Darth Bane because noone found the holocron. Sadly no it's not in there if it were that would have been a bombshell of nova tier. Yet I digress on that, Bane was given this insight by Revan's holocron so Bane didn't found the rule of two Revan did (arguably). You can count from Bane's practice of RoT OR from when Revan put this into the faulty holocron.

The Jedi lost because of Yoda. Not because Yoda lost the duel or anything like that, but because Yoda's god complex wouldn't allow him to step back. He _knew_ he was the best, wisest, most powerful Jedi in the Order, and that _nobody_ could train younglings as well as he could, and _nobody_ could be trusted to make council decisions the way he could. As a result, he ended up shaping the entire Jedi order into inferior clones of himself. The Sith didn't need to defeat ten thousand Jedi. They only needed to defeat one.

Sidious had strengthened the darkside and shattered the light. Their battle was not Sidious vs Yoda, it was the Dark vs the Light. In the end, the Jedi ultimately had to defeat the sith the same way as the sith had defeated the jedi, by working in the shadows and strengthening their connection to the force

At the end of the day the real reason is because Palps had plot armor protecting him. I have a hard time believing that Yoda who has hundreds of years in experience with the force ended up losing a force battle to Palpatin. In my mind Yoda straight out kills Palpatine with the force as opposed to engaging in a lightsaber duel which is out of character for both sides.

experience doesn't equate absolutely to power, Yoda is less powerful in ROTS than he had been at earlier points in his life, we know that from how he's able to move less stones in Jedi force practice than he once was able too, it might be because of old age, or assuming that doesn't affect force manipulation capability it may be due to the growing influence of the Sith over the Force weakening all Jedi, but he was not at the peak of his own power, & Sideous' power had grown exponentially even just between Ep I & Ep III(he moved from sith apprentice who took part in the clouding of the force to sole lord of the sith effective master over the force itself and master of close to if not all previously lost knowledge of the sith in that time frame)

Yoda is weaker in the force, which you would know if you did research. His midchlorian count is factually lower, and he never showed a feat that proved he had the same power that sidious had in the force.

Besides plot armor, Yoda and Windu together would have keen stomped and permanently defeated Palpatine, which is one of the reasons Palpatine waited until Yoda was off world to reveal himself.
