I pinched my sleeve with a hose clamp. It worked really good. Got a lot more compression out of it! But I have a nickel plating solution, and I have a sacrificial sleeve I’m thinking of doing a re-plate on it. It might be hard. But it’s worth a try

IFantom fr.27 engine have same size sleeve as .21? I have one that literally is brand new that the air filter fell off and it was dusted, sleeve not piston have any deep scratches in them but I can tell it’s low on compression it was ran on gravel road when it happened but idk if another make engines piston and sleeve would work in a Fantom or not or if I could get away with pinching it like this thanks

@@donaldfeichtinger3529 the best thing to do would be to disassemble the engine and measure the outer diameter of the sleeve. whatever that measurement is, get a copper pipe with the inner diameter the same as the sleeve to make the copper ring, and get a clamp that has an inner diameter 1/8 inches bigger than the sleeve. As far as the sleeve being the same size as a .21? I’m not sure

I'm dealing with the same detonation after engine gets over 210f. Also it will not idle unlessI lean it like crazy. This does not happen until it gets to temp. So you are saying .2mm shim helped? Also what plug are you were uou running? Sry if I missed that in the video..
@moralesrcdesigns3784
@moralesrcdesigns3784 5 ай бұрын
The engine ran great the way it came out of the box, but I had to be pretty spot on with the tune or else it wouldn’t seem to run right. Adding the shim definitely calmed the engine down in terms of erratic the idle and throttle response was. It widened the tuning window a bunch and made it way more forgiving without sacrificing any sort of power. I’m running an O.S. p3 gold plug right now and it hasn’t given me any problems. Keeps the engine responsive and idle consistent without being erratic

Thats an interesting why of doing a repinch , I've only done it myself a handful of times but i used my metal lathe chuck , but i can see this is a nice why of doing it on the bench , i have some clamps so i will give it a try and compare both methods obviously im lucky having a lathe so this is a cheaper way to do the same job , thanks for sharing your method im sure you have helped lots of guys out and saved them some money too , stay safe mate 🇬🇧

The lathe chuck definitely seems like the way to go in my opinion. Seems way more precise and consistent than this method, but this is definitely a cheap and quick way to do the job. Good for if you need a quick pinch at the track or something like that. I watched EB Mod’s video on his repinch tool and I’m pretty sure it used a lathe chuck that he custom machined to his design for the tool. I found and priced out the parts I’d need to make my own and been meaning to buy them for a while now but haven’t yet 😅

@moralesrcdesigns3784
@moralesrcdesigns3784 Жыл бұрын
I used a 3/4” inner diameter copper from ace pipe and I cut it to be 4mm wide. This works for just about every .21 engine, but I’ve found that some .21s have a lower point where the pinch starts so you need to use a 5-6mm ring. Cut a few with different thicknesses and see what works with each engine starting with the thinnest and working your way up until the pinch starts where it’s supposed to

hey man sorry i’m so late to this comment. i’m not super active on tho account 😅 but i run the 21j carb on my v-spec and use adam drakes settings on his website as a baseline/starting point and tune from there. if you’re using the original 21c carb, i’d go flush on the low speed, 1mm in from flush on the high speed which is i think around 2 turns, flush on the mid range, and .7mm on the idle. this should be a decently rich starting point. if you still can’t get it to idle, it might be something else with the engine like bearings or an air leak somewhere

This is from this past Sunday where I tested the first mod I did to the engine. It was some simple work to the sleeve and the engine gained a noticeable increase in responsiveness while maintaining a smooth, controllable power delivery. The power band also became very linear and predictable so it made driving the buggy, which is usually a hassle on this track, much easier and far more enjoyable. I have now modified the crankshaft to test this coming Sunday and that will likely be the finished product that will be up for sale by the New Year.

How many head shims you got on that? Your suppose to remove one if you change strength fuel to higher % right? 2 is the default amount I think, if there's three from factory.
@moralesrcdesigns3784
@moralesrcdesigns3784 Жыл бұрын
These engines came with two. One is .15mm and the other is .10mm I think. I haven’t had to do any headshim adding or remove while switching back and forth between 20% and 30%. I think once you get into the lower stuff like 15% or less is when you want to remove headshims or go to a hotter plug if possible. I run protek t3 plugs with 30% VP Tessmann blend and haven’t had any problems. The only time I add headshims is if an engine is running a little hot and is finicky to tune. With the bigger piston to head clearance, the engine usually smoothens out, tunes easier, and runs cooler.
@mtadave6702
@mtadave6702 Жыл бұрын
@@moralesrcdesigns3784 the better plugs are p3. Those t3's don't last as long as the p3. 30% nitro is ilegal here and Europe believe it or not, our strongest fuel (unless we make 30 ourselves) is 25. Your right about removing the shims if you go as low as 15, but I hate using anything less than 20 and so do my cars.

@@mtadave6702 I also have p3 plugs, but I’ve found that those are too hot for most engines so I only run them in my OS’s. My dad is the person who buys 90% of the stuff for him, me, and my brother so he buys the t3 plugs since they’re a few dollars cheaper and since we’re running 6 engines at a time. I haven’t had any problems with the t3 plugs, they last a decent amount of time (definitely not as long as p3s) and all our engines run consistent and tune easy. It’s unfortunate that you guys can’t run 30% over there because these little nitros absolutely love 30. 20% is great, but the engines just don’t respond quite as well

Then I heated it tried the process again no luck , I think the material used in os engines is very hard . So out of ideas
@moralesrcdesigns3784
@moralesrcdesigns3784 2 жыл бұрын
From my experience, that’s what the os engines do, they actually use quite soft metals, but the piston doesn’t go as high in an os sleeve so even though you move the piston down, the clamp actually compresses more of where the headbutton sits rather than around top dead center. I’ve found that pinching an os like this actually works quite well because the pinch isn’t crazy tight, but it holds its pinch better when it gets hot. If you’re still having trouble, try move the clamp itself lower down on the sleeve about 2-4mm and try again. It’ll be a bit harder to keep the clamp straight, but by doing that, you’ll compress more around where top dead center is and you should be able to fee more pinch. Always start with a little and then go tighter if you need to. It’s easier to tighten the pinch a little more than fix over tightening it
@moralesrcdesigns3784
@moralesrcdesigns3784 2 жыл бұрын
Ok so here’s a quick rundown of my experience with the engine since the last upload. I love the engine. It makes tons of power, is easy to tune, holds a tune really well, and is reliable as hell. The only downside I’ve had is that the break in period of the engine is significantly longer than most engines. It took close to 3 gallons of fuel (I’m closing in on 4 gallons run through it as of right now) before the mechanical pinch went away and I could tune it properly and have it idle properly. It requires a lot of patience, but I was rewarded with a fantastic engine. I have not made any mods to the engine yet. I definitely will soon though. I just want to make sure that I’m getting the most out of the engine stock so I know how much to modify it. I don’t want to modify too much only to find out that the engine had more in it and now I have an engine that makes too much power and now won’t last as long. The goal is to make a slight increase in power and fuel mileage while maintaining reliability and longevity. It doesn’t need a whole lot more power and the fuel mileage is pretty good so I won’t have to do much to improve that either.
