Japanese food uses some ingredients being brought up into the UK I wasn't used to. But learning how to cook Japanese food I love how you can take pure simple ingredients yet make something very special. I can honestly say it's improved my digestion. And I now follow only eating till I'm 80 percent full.

The idea of placing chopsticks on bowl or plate is that North American is we put the cutlery on our plates when we are finished our meal. A tough habit to break for we non-Japanese.

Great video! I am learning to fillet fish and I want to learn to use the whole fish too, so I'll be sure to try and make this! :) How do you process the head before boiling it? Do you remove the gill plates? How about the brain?

I have a question, what does it mean when a half Japanese man brings you soup in bed and you don't slurp because you're American and he lays underneath you and licks your ear

On the topic of slurping soups, I've learned from other sources that slurping is a display of respect to the cook, and that eating silently means the dish wasn't "worthy".

The older a culture, the more ritualistic the nit pickery gets. Case in point. Babylon 5' Membari. Very Japanese esq. Walk into a room ritualistically. Sleep ritualistically. Open a door ritualistically. Close a door ritualistically. Is eat a meal ritualistically. Et cetera et cetera at nazum. I mean really the Fish has to face a specific direction? SERIOSLY!?

Can we get the recipe earlier, like at the start, so we can write down and make notes as we watch? Where it is, other videos cover up a lot of the recipe.

The issue I run into a lot when trying to hold chopsticks the “proper” way is that when I try to press the lower chopstick onto my ring finger it has a tendency to slide further up my finger and completely mess up my grip. Any idea why this might be or what a solution is?

I love Taiji's channel and recipes, but what is cringy about this short, which is a good reminder of the extensive video, by the way, is why the hell is it such an iconic CHINESE music, they've used.??? Someone goofed, here... 😂

One thing all the westerners misunderstand about the East is that in the East our idea was not that of a religion but a philosophy or a way of life. All ancient eastern religion are almost the same, bow down or touching feet of elders and gurus. Buddhism started from indian subcontinent where Hinduism was already based on same customs of many gods and a way of life not a religion. And almost all of these ethics were based on one simple logic to live, that worshipping a dead stone and believing it is God symbolizes power of manifestation and coexist that even plants are precious and are Gods, or Cows or stones or your land and even your food and toilet. Every particle is a universe in it's self. Female Gods are only found in Eastern cultures. And these eastern cultures had travelers who took knowledge from one place to another. Nalanda was one of the ancient university where Japanese students used to study there as well you can look it up. Even an artefact from Silla dynasty in Gyeongju National Museum suggest link between Ayodhya from India and Korea. So these cultures were very well connected and some even had royal marriages. Eastern cultures are the only way to go for the betterment of our civilisation.

One thing. There was indeed a war over religion, and I’m sure there were others in japans history but the one I think of is the Shimabara revolution, where the large population of Christian Japanese revolted against their rulers overs abuses in aspects like taxation on the poor

Be careful with "HOT" wasabi. I am used to eating the prepared kinds at restaurants and even tubes at home. Bought the HOT one and damn near choked to death. Mostly due to the onigiri breaking off and getting stuck in my throat, but that HOT wasabi in the tube is much hotter than the regular ones ಥ‿ಥ

Be weary where you get your rice. Grown in America or Grown in the USA, means it could be from any state, a whole bag or a mixture. Southern states would use arsenic pesticides on the cotton fields. When cotton fell out of favor, they switched to rice. However, the pesticides had already seeped and stayed in the soil. Rice already has a high amount of natural arsenic in it, as it likes to cling to the grain, brown rice especially, as it has more to hold onto. So when you eat Grown in the US or America, you are eating double or more the world's average of arsenic. Rinsing and over cooking will not get rid of it. It will always have more arsenic, than rice grown in Thailand, for instance. The only exception to this rule, is rice grown in California. It is the only state that I am aware of, that proudly states it was grown in their territory. They have the world's average of arsenic, because they did not spray arsenic on their plants, prior to cultivating rice. Small children and the elderly, especially, are the most vunerable. The baby's little bodies and the elderly's frailer ones, can not withstand the higher levels of arsenic. It is why a lot of baby rice formulas have been recalled and other products using rice has been lessened on store shelves, than in the past.

My mom is Japanese, and a bit of a history enthusiast. She always told me for that last point, the chopsticks on top of a dish, it's not so bad as long as you make sure that the chopsticks aren't positioned so that they're pointing in the direction of anyone else you're eating with. I don't remember the details, but something about it could be taken as you planned to fight that person, maybe?
