I just happened upon this video after watching a different one… and I’m so glad I did!! I am not an artist by any stretch of the imagination but I found this captivating. I took copious notes as I watched the video, stopping and starting so I didn’t miss anything. I am a mixed media scrapbooker and would love to try this for a background paper. I am looking forward to watching many more of your videos. You are so talented!!

You can also try a regular sponge, makeup sponge, or even a rag - the biggest challenge (particularly with the rag and regular sponge) will be your water control. So I suggest starting with a bit dryer paint mix first, and then use a spray bottle to increase the wetness on your sponge/rag to add water since this will give you more control.

Arches 100% cotton cold press! You could do it on hot press, but you wouldn't get deep of a spread on the colors :)

New to watercolor, but i do have some experience with calligraphy brushes (㊗️). Have you ever used one with watercolor instead of ink?
@kindredsoulart21115 ай бұрын
That's so awesome! I have a few calligraphy brushes that I had purchased when I lived in China, but I was really poor so they weren't very good quality, but there are ink-based watercolors (like Dr. Martin brand) that may work really well with those types of brushes since they are originally designed for ink. You could use them for watercolor, too, but might enjoy the familiarity of the ink consistency with the experience you already have!

First comment was around 29 minutes. Next question, your sample doesn’t have all the white bubbles. Why did you use them in this illustration. But not in the sample? I kept waiting for you to do something with them, but for the most part, you just left them alone. (The finished product was beautiful; just trying to understand the thought process and why the difference.)
@kindredsoulart21115 ай бұрын
You have great questions! I almost never paint the same thing twice so I am always playing around with things that I can try out. The white dots started because I was playing around with bokeh effects (which is the little circles you get sometimes in photography). Since this video I've experimented a little bit with adding more color variation to those as well as color variations to the outline of individual bubbles, but I still like how they add kind of a whimsical and fuzzy feel to this version of the painting. I hope that makes sense!
@kimberlyobrien59126 ай бұрын
Right here…some of the bubbles or staying behind, and some going on top, how do you determine which will be in background and which in the foreground?
@kindredsoulart21115 ай бұрын
I am not sure I think consciously about which ones should go on top, but I kind of let my painting tell me which would feel better. Since the bubbles have some transparency, sometimes you can get away with switching which one is on top when you get a little bit later into the painting. I would say the white highlights are the strongest indicator of showing which one you want to go on top.

Yes, it's a tricky balance to have when making a video since some people really value having that kind of information about paints and supplies and all that, but there's others who may feel bored or disconnected (as it sounds like it may have been in your case). I recognize my video may not be some people's cup of tea and that's okay because we all learn in different ways. I hope you are able to find the videos you connect with most!

Sn this be done with acrylic paint?
@kindredsoulart21115 ай бұрын
It'll be a little trickier with acrylic paint because it's not as transparent as watercolor, but you can still take the basic principles and apply it with acrylic! You will just have a lot more direct blending and setting down of color vs letting the watercolor mix on it's own as it does in this tutorial.
