The first episode is such a masterclass in horror storytelling. I loved this show and the story from that episode on and wanted to see how these kids would survive. Season 2 was so disappointing. 😢

Honestly, I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not about the "plot twist" that Norman was alive. It was incredibly predictable, incredibly stupid and incredibly annoying. It absolutely infuriates me when something can't commit to the death of a character, especially when their death had actual meaning within the context of that piece of media. What Norman does in season one was beautiful and a testament to his character, going back to bring vital information while facing certain death all for the sake of others. Unfortunately I don't think that's a fault with season two as I'm assuming that was probably one of the few creative decisions that was actually from the manga. Normans death gave more weight to the first season as it showed no character was actually safe. However, him surviving actively hurts what had been established prior because it has re-established the indestructible nature of plot armor. The stakes of the story are eliminated because it re-integrates that, "They're the MC, they're fine!" mentality that I find often removes me from the immersion of a story. While I had my suspicions they wouldn't actually kill him off because they didn't show him being killed off, I hoped this was a case of relying on the viewers imagination to interpret the events as that is often more horrifying than the reality if they had instead depicted it themselves.

I thought Yugo's involvement would've been an intriguing part of the plot, because in the manga, he was the one who wrote "HELP ME" on the wall along with the names of the other kids he had escaped with as a child, because he thinks they're all dead after barely escaping from Goldy Pond after trying to follow a lead on a way to the human world. Now an adult, he's become bitter, his hair greying faster due to stress caused by his own self-hatred, and when he sees the Gracefield kids waltz into the bunker, he is pissed off and holds Emma at gunpoint as soon as she gets within arms reach. He posed as an interesting obstacle for the kids, you would think that finding out they're not the only kids to have escaped a farm would be a huge advantage for them, especially with one of them now being an adult and with knowledge on the leads. But no, turns out it's not as easy and convenient as that and that they need to figure out a way to outsmart Yugo to get him to take Emma and Ray to Goldy Pond. And later down the line, Yugo ends up growing attached to the kids and ends up becoming a father figure towards them, I will never forgive them for taking that away.

It’s both funny and sad how season 2 could’ve worked: What really holds the whole series back is the lack of explaining and bad execution past season 1 -why not explain the pen thing? -why their just random demon in the woods? -why is a Human black-op working with the demons? It has been like 4-6~ years, so I don’t remember all the details anymore, but like, the setting and things that occur aren’t really that bad, just bad b/c of the quality season 1 was, as well as the author writing himself into a corner: “Hey, they get hunted by demons after season 1.” But how would they escape? “Hey, maybe they can find a hole or something, and or use some of the extra gasoline from season 1 to set some ablaze.” *-demon bullshit….* Ironically, if someone just does a rewrite, show the pen in season 1, and do a Mushoku Tensei, then the series would’ve been better. Explain more of what happens, and as an extra, explain the things that can’t be explained inside of the series, like give Emma a data bank of old knowledge of the demon world from the shelter, and as a extra bit not gone over in the story, a deeper dive into it’s contents. (Why the good demons -forgot their names ngl- were inside the forest at that time, or why/what exactly happened to normal to become the genocidal maniac, besides what we saw in season 1.) Like, it’s not exactly the themes that’s bad, it’s the execution of the story, and the fact that the later arc basically go as smooth as a baby’s behind. Make some of the side children die, make Emma’s sacrifices have a bit more character and weight, and don’t turn all the other characters in 1D NpCs. These type of fumbles have been getting more prevalent in the recent years, and tbh, I really kinda want to see better versions, since it’s not like the series can’t be good, it’s just that when it released *it wasn’t that good.* SAO is my favorite example of this: Arcs were a mess, certain character interactions and ideas could’ve been mis-interpreted, (im talking SPECIFICALLY about the Alabama shit.) and tbh, the end of Elfheim was just weird… But Reki Karwahara is still writing the series, and tbh, SAO progressive is just a better SAO. Asuna’s the main MC, we go back into aincrad, and the character interactions from the original that are more fleshed out, and theirs more weight, even tho it’s literally a re-telling. (Personally, I love progressive more, since it retroactively ironed out a lot of the problems s1-2 had, and I personally enjoy that.) It’s not like it isn’t possible, but I do wish that this happens more, or at least happens the first time. Reki made SAO in highschool, and it was incomplete, being published in a messy state which he admits was from the time when he couldn’t write female characters. So we kinda just need to hope for a promise to neverland rewrite, since this series could’ve been good but fumbled in the end. Kinda have to hold on to hope for that tho.
