I crossed the Ford a bit higher up getting onto the Island Paul and I could feel my car going a bit sideways until I got into shallower water. You'll need to put a "wee something" on your fly Iain. Have you tried those magnetic trebles? Here's a fly, "The Top Secret." Size 8 single, black body with one turn of flat gold in the middle. Black hackle, very sparse stoat's tail wing. You'll need a baseball bat to keep the fish off it.

It was good to see a lot of fish in the pool Peter . I have fished some waters this year that I know in my heart that there is no fish in the pools . this time it may have been a little frustrating but I did go home happy........ it was the first time fishing at that part of the river and when I drove onto the island I never took the correct route and could feel my car slipping sideways slightly as I went through deeper water . all was safe and it saved me washing the car 😁. I think that I was using my 7 weight sage switch rod. I have found that it suits an 8 scandi short multi tip with the floating tip then a medium versy tip. I am quite fortunate to have accumulated a lot of tackle over the years due to the fact that I had always had the opportunity to do work for tackle shop owners and benefited from there good nature and kindness 😉 Cheers Iain. 🥃

Hi Iain, yes indeed frustrating. Days like this come to every angler. Loads of fish but none taking a fly. Great to enjoy the day anyway, especially when there is Flora and fauna to see, as well as just enjoying being in the water. Nick from York
@IainSB2 күн бұрын
it was great to see so many fish splash in the river as the pools in the lower beats have been empty of salmon since early in the season due to seals invading the bottom 1/3 rd of the river... it has taken a while to build up residents. In some pools there are no fish stopping and I think that it is due to the lack residents . Cheers Iain. 🥃

Iain, I’m fishing there this Saturday, I normally use a 13’4” rod for summer fishing in the north, would you recommend something bigger for upper Devine? Cheers
@IainSB2 күн бұрын
Hi Steven I think that the rain today might have lifted the water a bit for you . I have fished it often with my 12ft 9in rod I think that it may be wise to take a longer rod as most of the fish tend to travel up the far side close to the bank. when fishing the lower pool don't wade to deep in the bottom half. the pool that you can see in the distance has a massive island in the middle when the river is low and the fish tend to come up both sides . so let your fly come right onto the dangle before retrieving. I have seen anglers fishing the pool with the water up to their thighs and fish head and tail behind them. when I have pointed it out they seem to think that I am doing a wind up. I know of one angler that has caught fish over the last couple of years and about 50% have been close to the left bank. Tight Lines and let me know how you get on Cheers Iain. 🥃

Ian. Your single spey is a WOW! Question I notice you never seem to throw a 80-90 degree cast. On this side of the world that gives a boost the fly swing that sometimes gives the fish the nudge to attack the fly. Great videos though . Cheers!
@IainSB10 күн бұрын
I do on occasions cast at 90degrees Tom . I have had a few fish while the fly has been dragging round rather than having it on the dangle. I think that most anglers catch fish as the fly travels round. I have noticed over the years that if there are a few fish in the pool leaving it to hang for a bit of time and then a short pull can induce a take. There are a lot of beats that I fish that I don't have the opportunity to do this as there are usually guys following and it would not be proper to have them wait Cheers Iain. 🥃

Iain, Just a quick note - thanks so much for sharing and putting the time and effort into your productions. I’ve watched nearly all of them down through the years and they keep things bubbling during the long winters. I enjoy listening to your narratives and love the easy banter with friends, ghillies etc. Like yourself, I get about a fair bit - on different Irish rivers. We’re having a decent run of ‘Covid’ grilse this year so fishing is quite good at the moment. Anyway - hope you keep making the videos, so I’ll say no more, only to toast your good health with a wee dram and wish you all the best from a Celtic cousin for the rest of the season. Best wishes, Niall (Galway)

You are obviously blessed like myself that you have the time and friends that help us make the effort to go try different rivers and beats. I have found that a lot of Ghillies are helpful but don't like appearing on KZbin which is a shame as there is a lot of great characters with some amazing stories that may never be passed on. I wish you all the best for the rest of the season and coming seasons and will also lift a wee dram to toast your good health and your visits to pastures new Tight lines.
