My perennial leak seed heads are looking ready, found some bulbils on the ground the other day whilst it retains fresh light green colour. My first time to try to save these bulbils.

They are definitely ready now. They stay green. You can break up the head now and spread them on the ground or they store really well and you can plant them in the spring

So, the walking-onion (Allium x proliferum) is a cross between welch-onion (Allium fistulosum) and shallot (Allium cepa var. aggregatum)? that means, that the running synonyms "Allium cepa var. proliferum" and "Allium cepa var. viviparum" are no right, right?

From the ramial wood research from Laval University agronomy courses, the ramial chips with variable length are significantly better than the more uniform squarish chip for conducting bacterial action vertically through the layer. The shredders that do it are much faster too so a gas engine hammer mill it is; I love my little MacKissic Mighty Mac hammer mill shredder; it'll grab twigs out of your hands gloves and all, this little monster. Anyway kudos for the video. Educating people, even more market gardeners, about ramial wood will help keep us producing with less fertilizer during globalist-driven hand-to-mouth times. The ramial approach suffers from a serious lack of info at street level IMO. I'm getting shredded Red Alder with leaves from a commercial tree service so I don't have to go out to the bush and shred baby Alder trees into garbage cans myself this year. I've used cedar tips from trimming a large hedge to good effect too; even cedar is ramial wood that rots quickly if it's just green twigs and leaves. Willow has growth factors in it so I love shredding willow too :)

How do you differentiate between late blight and nutrient deficiency? Could you unknowingly be selecting for plants that have better nutrient gathering for nitrogen and phosphorus rather than for late blight resistance?
@thoseplantpeople
@thoseplantpeople Жыл бұрын
Very interesting comment, I suppose either one would be a positive selection characteristic. My trials are basic and too tiny to infer any scientific conclusions. I no longer have access to lab equipment to test my theories. I have old ADAS/DEFRA charts on nutrient deficiencies and disease characteristics. There are much better ones online if you look at university websites specialising in your given crop. Although focusing on blight, in reality I could be selecting for any number of positive traits I haven’t even thought of; quick germination, low temperature growth potential, short season, vigour under stress i.e. neglect, and many others. In reality and above all, the most important things for us are flavour and productivity under my less than ideal ‘blight-prone’ growing conditions, restrained by organic practice and despite scientific rigour. I would love to know why they perform exactly as they do but at the end of the day all I want is a tasty feast given the time I have to spare. Many thanks.

Great to see your set up and the results of your breeding work so far, and seeing what best suits your growing conditions is incredibly important as you evaluate each cross! I enjoyed your discussion of pros and cons of various lines as you work towards better disease resistance. I’ve never had to deal with blight thankfully, but last summer was a disaster from constant rain and high humidity resulting in poor fruitset, uneven pollination resulting in misshapen tomatoes and early death of plants from diseases. After planting I didn’t water the plants at all for the whole season! Only one variety didn’t seem to care about the sodden conditions - Sneaky Sauce. It produced around 40 tomatoes and kept healthy the whole season, reaching just over a meter in height. I don’t know how well it would cope with blight but it certainly didn’t succumb to any diseases here in south eastern Australia.
@thoseplantpeople530

It’s amazing how these ‘useful traits’ are hidden until the plants are tested in some way by environmental factors, pests, disease or even unintentional neglect. It is this fascination I think that keeps us all motivated to keep going, it also makes us better observers of variation. A world without blight seems a strange place but there are plenty of other pests and diseases we don’t have to worry about here on our small hill on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. We topped 39oC, outside!!!, this year for the first time ever recorded this summer. In a fast changing environment noticing variation will be critical to successful food growing into the future and sharing this knowledge freely will be crucial. The Open Source Seed Initiative has never been more important.

It's called jointless. One of your parental lines likely has it in the genetics. We are very much alike in our breeding thoughts. I've been breeding my lines for 7 years now and am working on a number of goals at this point including compact, shorter internode height; shorter length, full leaf coverage; thick central stem; uniform non-catfacing small stem scar fruit; high production; production in high heat; and as good a disease resistance I can muster including blight. It's a tall order, but I'm getting there. Really enjoyed your video. It's not something many are doing.

Not enough explanatory commentary, I'm afraid. You suddenly started pouring alcohol into juice, without giving any indication that you were testing the relative pH of your different combinations. Nothing was said about whether one should harvest after the first frost or whenever the fruit comes away easily with a light tug. Lovely images and music, clearly a great intention behind the video, but much more explanation and information is needed. I came away still with no really comprehensive instructions on how to make medlar jelly.
