I like the informal jacket thrown on top of traditional clothes look. It is a look that goes quite far back, for instance in the post WW2 period when one might wear something like a duffle coat over a suit. The idea is you have one layer that is dapper and another that is just functional and keeps out the elements (albeit still classic). I think it is a good aesthetic.

Good morning Chris. The M 65 was really popular in the 1960s and 1970s. I used to wear safari jackets in the late 79s and early 80s. Roger Moore wore one in Moonraker in 1979. They do look good with a tie. Your tweed jacket looks like a Teba jacket. I have worn my Barbours with a tie especially while shooting. Good video lots of great ideas. I really like the tweed chore jacket by Peter Christian. Cheers Ron

Hi Ron, glad you enjoyed the video and gained some inspiration from it. Roger Moore and the safari jacket in Moonraker, that was a cool look back in the day 😊. The safari jacket has changed a little since then, it now tends to have a more narrow lapel, and is a little shorter in length, but still a good look in this day and age. Whilst I mentioned about the M65 jacket being around since the second world war and after, I should have mentioned that the figures after the M in the M-65 jacket's name stands for the year it was first issued to the US military, which was 1965. The M-65 jacket was designed to replace the M-51 jacket, which was an evolution of the M-43. Hence mentioning its existence since the second world war and after in some form. 😊 Its great to hear you still wear a tie when shooting and when wearing a wax jacket, I tend to wear one still when wearing a wax jacket for rural wear or informal wear. I like your good self am interested in the tweed chore jacket by Peter Christian, I think it would be a great addition to my wardrobe for those casual wears and a good substitute for a more traditional tweed jacket. Lovely to hear from you again dear friend 😊

The four pocket design works very well IMO. It’s casual enough for a polo or button down. It creates a good symmetry to balance things out. I have a Barbour Ogston that have this 4 pocket design which I wear for cooler fall & winters with a t shirt for last minute errands or with a flannel for casual events. Hope I can send this for a rewax soon so I can request from Barbour if I can replace the polyester sleeves for cotton so I can sweat less.

Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video. You're absolutely right about the four-pocket design, it’s both functional and stylish. Originally, Barbour jackets were designed for farmers, hunting, and outdoor activities, which is why they’re so practical. The pockets were perfect for carrying essentials during work or on a shoot. Over time, Barbour has kept that heritage but made the style versatile enough to wear casually, as you mentioned. I also think the Ogston is a great jacket for cooler weather, and I love how you can wear it with a range of outfits, from a T-shirt (although other shirts would sartorially be preferred) for running errands to flannel for casual events. Sending it in for rewaxing sounds like a solid plan! Requesting cotton sleeves sounds like a good idea too-it would definitely help with breathability. Hopefully, Barbour can accommodate that, as it would make the jacket even more comfortable for those in-between seasons. 👍🙂

Thank you for this informative video, I like several of the styles you showed. Currently, I own 3 field type jackets, and I wear them for outer wear only. One is a lighter wool, the other two are cotton canvas in an American barn style with a corduroy collar.

Hi Mike, glad you enjoyed the video and own 3 field jackets, they are very popular as an all round utility jacket. I had an image of the barn styled one, but forgot to use it in the video, it was a heavy canvas styled sand coloured one with a corduroy collar. 👍🙂

Would barn coats work be in this category, too? For me, they take the place of the chore coat? I have found that most chore coats are a bit too snug for me, where as a barn coat is more functional.
@TheBritishDapper

Great question, typically a barn coat has two large hip pockets and are similar to that of a field jacket - so I think you could include them in this catagory 👍🙂

Hi there. It sounds like you got a bargain there. The great thing about military items is that they tend to be built to last and are hard wearing. Changing the buttons is inspired and by changing the buttons, you can get a completely different look and feel to an ensemble item. Your jacket should last you for many years, compared to its contemporary high street equivalent. Thank you for sharing.👍🙂

An interesting video with some good points and advice, thank you. I consider the wearing of military clothes in an urban environment inappropriate if not ridiculous or disrespectful. I remember a comment from a former soldier about "those fools who think that military garments are a kind of fashion accessory that looks "cool". I feel the same. The only case where I find acceptable the use of military clothes is in a rural environment when camping or hiking in cold and/or wet conditions. "To each its own".

Hi There, there are some many things to consider 🤔 it depends where you live, your budget, if you want new of preworn etc? I would suggest if you are on a buget, try vinted or eBay. If you have the cash, consider Savile Row as the top end, but you could try a local tailor with experience of making these types of garments. You could try Cordings, Peter Christian, Brook Tavener, but another is House of Bruar and they do some lovely tweed sheltland tweed jackets at about the price range of £195 to £275. Hope this helps👍🙂

@CanadaFree-ce9jn

All are sports jackets in a way: golf, hunting/horseback riding, motorbike in that order. Harrington is now more office casual, waxed cotton less so but you can make it work if you work at having your own look as opposed to 100% heading to the office style.

Hi Philipp, great to hear from you and glad you enjoyed the video. I have 2 Harrington jackets and find they are great for those informal and casual wears and living in the UK and in the countryside - I have 2 wax jacket which are great for those informal wears on a rainy day. Leather jackets, long or short are great for those cooler period and great for informal situations, and can be very stylish when paired well with other items in an ensemble 👍🙂

I wear M65 jackets for like ~25 years. Love the 4 pockets style. Also so called "Safari" Jackets into similar style, 4 pockets. It's the only thing, which is time-less, seriously. Have 2 G.I. issue M65s, and modern reproductions. Good enough. Woodland camouflage is a bit too offensive, into daily, ordinary life. So i prefer olive green, or -black, preferred. Have one jacket which looks similar (M65 style, field jacket style) from color like your last field jacket here - but i'll recolor it it olive green, at least next january...

@@TheBritishDapper I can recommand also the Brandit or (other brands) so called cotton "Britannia" summer jacket - it's relative light & thin, whileas keeping some 70s style, due to the old, rounded pocket flaps design...i like it. What's more, the olive green color does fade over the ages, and looks nice, giving vintage vibes...and the black one...once the color is faded, bleached out by the Sun over time (UV), i just recolor it black, and it does look like new, just being bought from the store.... 🙂

I'd say Field Jackets are safer look than Safari Jackets. I have real field jackets: Canadian, British, and used to own the M-65. I consider my Barbour and my UniQlo variant to be more English countryside look, OD yes but without looking overly military. i tend to group field coats into the four covered chest pockets while a chore jacket has three uncovered (no flap) outside pockets. Field jackets, military ones, also tends to have the ability to attach a liner, and often have a stash away hood. Besides what most think of as physical work, the classic French Chore jacket was also the jacket of poets and artists (oil paints, etc.). You could toss bakers in there and some shop keepers in the past.
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 3 ай бұрын
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video and for your shared comments. I definitely agree that field jackets offer a safer, more versatile look compared to safari jackets, but from a style point of view and what I see currently on the street the Safari jacket is very popular. I have 2 waxed jacket myself that leans more towards that English countryside vibe you mentioned, and my field jacket does have a stowaway hood, which could come in handy if I can ever be bothered to get it out 😆. I don’t currently use a chore jacket, but I’m thinking of adding a tweed version to my wardrobe. I like the idea of how chore jackets blend practicality with a more artistic history, especially the French ones that were worn by poets, artists, and shopkeepers. A tweed one would offer a nice twist on that heritage, with a bit of a countryside feel too 👍🙂

Good evening! Chris. I'm from the US, and I enjoyed your video pertaining to field jackets. I love your dress wear as well, awesome mustache, by the way. I want to let you know that I'm a Christian here in America and my prayers are that you and your family also as well as your viewers, and subscribers will make it into heaven! By accepting JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR! FOR THE BEST. BEST CLOTHING WE CAN HAVE IS A WHITE ROBE WITHOUT SPOT OR BLEMISH, ONCE WE ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS OUR LORD! AND SAVIOR! AND WE TURN AWAY FROM OUR SINS! THAT WHITE ROBE THAT HAS BEEN WASHED THROUGH THE BLOOD OF JESUS! IT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT GARMENT WE CAN EVER WEAR IN THE SIGHT OF GOD!Revelation 7:9-10 NKJV [9] After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, [10] and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 🙏❤️✝️🙏

I've very much fallen in love with wearing my... Well, it's not a field jacket. It's a sample Belstaff Trophy Master in granite colored leather that never seems to have made it to full production, with a good tweed waist coat, dress shirt and wool/tartan tie, finished with a pair of good ol' fahioned selvedge jeans and RW iron rangers. And I'm very lucky to own a very nice concept sample Sasta jacket in Sarka wool that is a nice mixture of hunt and field jackets. Never understood why it never got taken into production but I guess it's left me with a couple of very nice and rare jackets! 😅 Long live eBay and networking.
