A quick note about the passage you're about to read. I wrote this in my mother tounge, but luckily it isn't too difficult to translate from norwegian to english, although what beauty there was has all but disappeared: Everything has come to a halt. It is as if two birds of prey hovers above me, waiting on me to fall down and expire because they know I'm approacing death. I am supposed start a new job as a teacher. A job I do not want. "That's life" I hear my parents say, everytime I hear those words I can feel a portion of my soul ebb out. You could ask why I'm taking a job I do not want, the truth is that it is the only secure job that fits my limited abilities as a human being. I am tired and have been so for a long time. I often drink alone. I'm lonely and bored. I can hear my parents again, saying "that's life". Why does life have to "be like that"? Do achievable dreams always fail? I don't suffer from megalomania, I don't have such a thing in my blood. Ok, I'll take a job I do not want, but I'm not going to die before I've written literature that soars in the highest heavens with my predecessors, above the vile birds of prey.

I think this is great insight that applies to all sorts of writing. Just tell the story, describe the things that naturally occur within that story, and if your story has legs and your observational prowess is strong enough, the poetry and the articulate nature of the prose should happen by virtue of this rarely had combination of circumstances. Anyways, great video! Subscribed!

Hard times create strong people, strong people create good times, good times create weak people and weak people produce shit "art". Not to say we should all suffer terribly but people who haven't overcome something often don't have much to say.
@JayTheAuthor Жыл бұрын
Brutally true words! I wouldn't say good times create weak people, exciting times is my best fuel for inspiration, but still, it's important to push yourself through hardship so you can appreciate the good times.
@zorothe9th Жыл бұрын
@@JayTheAuthor I agree. By good times I mean too much comfort and codling; a coddled teen is less likely to become a great author. Exciting and enjoyable things can definitely inspire you to make art as long as there's a challenge, like love. So many people started creating art after falling in love. When the author lays themselves bare for the reader it becomes much more interesting, like Harry Crews' "Childhood" memoir.

I just watched this video on first day back at home in the city after spending three weeks at grandparents' in the countryside. I visit my grandparents every summer and I always get a little melancholic first few days when I go back to the city, I really miss the peace and nature of the countryside. But today I went to the city center and walked around a bit, I always try to spot interesting architectual elements on buildings that I haven't seen before and I did so today. And so far I haven't felt melancholy, I think looking at the place you live with fresh eyes does the trick. And even though I'm more of a countryside person and I wish I grew up there like my parents, I have to notice the that living in the city has so many privileges but is also great for people watching and I can appreciate the fact that many artists (that includes painters, writers and singers) lived in the city where I grew up (its the capital of my country). I think that every place has its benefits but you just have to notice them when they're easily forgotten. While in the city alone I would act as a tourist for myself and it is so fun, you can visit museums, buy some special food or just look at everything as it is your first glance. I'm really glad you made a video on this, and even though it is about life in the country, because it reminds me that you can always grow, even at your hometown.

I was thinking about rewriting my life, but it's too dreadful to scrounge up the past that had so many pain, wounds, and sins. Especially in my failure moments, in my college life, in a new city. In a believable story, if I keep following the trail, I would find my bright future there; graduate on time, straight A's, get a job after and make a salary to make your family proud. And smooth reality showed me his true face, harder and rough, when I thought I was right, it turned out to be a bunch of ball shacks. It's like, somebody gave a beautiful wrapped candy, with sweet promises inside, revealed, it's just a shitty candy. I found the truth about life is not one paved road that I could easily down ride there into my destinations. But it's a thousand and endless ways with so many traffic signs and different stories. I got distracted and delusional. I taste a new experienced and fucked up in the end, nothing but never get into the main destination. Reminiscing those old times, like holy shit, how can I so fucked up. But, I don't know, if I rewrite those old times at what cost? And why? I feel like my life is not that important.

thanks Jay, that is some really good advice! i remember moving away from home and how excited i was to finally live in a big city and to experience the big city life with all its wonders and fascinations. but i also remember coming back home again after a few months and how much i appreciated breathing fresh air, walking through fields and meadows and watching all the birds and squirrels. i had all that before but i had never looked at it as something special. PS: dog is a perfect name for a dog & she´s adorable

This isn’t a paragraph about my life, but thank you so much for this bit at the end, especially from 12:50 onwards. I never thought of writing in this way-using just ten minutes each day and pulling just the smallest bits out which blossom into their own respective works. It makes the process feel unexplored and adventurous and guided. Thanks, Jay.

My life feels like a wild cocktail at the moment. Some sweet orange juice, some bitter fresh squeezed lemon, some hard hitting rum and a hint of something I can certainly taste but just not quite put a name on. Give it all a nice shake to mix things up to a confusing mess and there you go! Cheers! Great video, Jay, I had a good time thinking + writing about my life cocktail 🍹
