Your reading technique is pure gold. I'm definitely going to do that for my literature course because we are asked to read Huckleberry Finn for an exam, and your tip sir, will be helpful!

@@JayTheAuthor not only your tip is perfect for writers, but for readers as well. I did as you told us and read the first part of chapter 19 very carefully, and this helped me see how Twain constructed his sentences and set out the tone/mood. I cannot wait to carry on reading this way the great of the book and draw general observations regarding the plot and characters... You, my good sir, deserve a tip of my hat☕

People always want fancy, revolutionnary writing tips but this is legit the best one ; to be a better writer one needs to be a better reader. Also hard agree that studying the craft doesn't have to be torture, it shouldn't be, what's more beautiful and thrilling than connecting with the author's mind through their work? That video's message was glorious, thank you for sharing

Great video! I think the best way of reading slowly is how Hunter S. Thompson used to type out his favorite books one word at a time. You really are forced to essentially read at a snail's pace, and think about all the punctuation and word choices--not to mention how each word forms a particular type of sentence (be it narrative, descriptive, dialogue, internal monologue, etc) and how each sentence forms a cohesive paragraph which gives the story a rhythm and structure. I caught so many different techniques, especially since I couldn't read something as slow as 40-50 words per minute. I haven't typed out a full book, but just my favorite chapters from different books.

Beautiful comment there Micheal. Hunter is a huge inspiration for me in terms of living. For the better part of my early twenties, I wanted to live and write like him. I did, and ended up kidnapped by the Cartel and in some torture dungeon underneath London haha. Now I'm taking it slower, in terms of living/writing like him, but I think I adopted my reading technique from some traits of his. Since I started reading slow and rewriting, it drastically helped me understand the craft of writing so much better, and writing becomes faster. You worry less and think less when you write :) Thanks for your well thought out comment, you rock!

You have articulated your ideas in the best possible way I can imagine.....I have no doubt you are a great reader.. I just wanted to ask : If you have to pick 20 books a year how many of them will be literay classics (deep stuff) ?
@JayTheAuthor
@JayTheAuthor 3 жыл бұрын
That's a pretty interesting question, I will have to take a long think about that haha Great question. Maybe 12 classics, 8 modern authors. I guess it all changes with my moods and people who pull me into different genres and authors.

Thank you for this! I no longer feel bad about not having tons of books under my belt. :) I've been obsessing over my favorite books and analyzing and reanalyzing what the author did to make me like them so much. PS I also annotate EVERYTHING I read. I signed up for a boxing class recently. I didn't realize I was underlining and circling the boxing class contract until the instructor pointed it out.
