It usually depends on CCS. But that has gotten much better the last few months with new charger replacements on EA sites and further expansion, the Frying J/EVgo new deployments, Mercedes Benz network keeps growing, and now IONNA has entered the the mix. And of course, even as only a backup due to 400V vs 800V, it now has supercharger access

Dualism here... I love the Ioniq 5! The way it looks is distinctive, modern, and useful. My head however gets in the way and says Ioniq 6 for the efficiency, and range. Neither are overly efficient to be honest. There is a midcycle refresh coming for the I6. I am not a fan of the way it looks currently. I actually don't mind the back of the car as much as the not so great front of the car look. The Highland refresh also the same straight face sterile look. Not a good look. So maybe with the I6 refresh it will get more interest. I would probably have to make it a heart call and would lean toward the I5.

The Tesla has a frunk but it's too small to be of much use. The BMW i4 has a very roomy trunk which is rendered even roomier with the rear seats folded forward. The rear seats are tight for adults on long trips. If you routinely carry adults in the back, there are other BMW EVs you might want to consider.

Nice trip! Well done video. We have the same car and think it's a great little road tripper. It's very efficient and charges reasonably fast. The time between charging stops works out about the same as our bodily need for rest stops. We've rarely felt like we were having to wait around to charge. Usually, by the time we plug in, walk to the restroom, get a drink/snack, and do a few stretches, the car is telling us that it's time to move on. BTW, I'm almost at 20k miles on mine. No complaints other than it's HW3 and can't take advantage of FSD V13.2.

To answer the question about battery preconditioning, the LFP pack is more sensitive to cold weather and less energy dense (same mass to heat up as a higher capacity non-LFP pack). Add to that, it's only single motor so less power is available to heat the battery (about 3.5 kW compared to 7 kW of a dual motor car). My mid-range RWD 3 suffers from the same slow battery heating, although it's less mass to heat up. I'd suspect that in single-digit or below temperatures, the battery heating system is incapable of heating it to the 45C target Supercharging temperature while driving at highway speeds. This makes it even more important to charge enough when you arrive that you can drive at least an hour before your first charging stop the next day.

Great road trip. I've done quite a bit of Model 3 car camping across the country and the best mattress option I've found is a 6" memory foam bunk bed mattress ($100!). It slides into the trunk perfectly with the rear seats down. Super comfortable, but makes the rear seats unusable during the entire trip - not a problem if you're solo. My TesMat mattress is okay, but not very agreeable with my back. I'm 6'4" and 300#. On an overnight stop like Omaha, charge more than you think you need upon arrival in order to make it to the next stop. A cold soak can knock up to 20% off of your next arrival. You probably killed an hour between the 20 minute backtrack and subsequent cold charging. I just did a 4,000 mile trip from Seattle to Green Bay in a 2018 Model S with 360,000 miles. Should've filmed it!

I also have a M3 LFP and enjoyed the video. I'm curious if taking interstates 55 to 44 to 40 would have been more efficient because of the slightly warmer temperatures, being further south. I'm thinking the battery would have pre-conditioned less and maybe you would have had fewer stops. Even though Google says this route would take a hour longer, maybe you would have made up for it with fewer charging stops. Would be interested in your thoughts. Thanks again for the videos.

For commenters concerned about how many stops, we drive a couple hours and take a break. If ypu time your breaks and meals around charging stops, you aren't "wasting" time. We have always traveled with kids and pets so frequent stops were a part of traveling with our gas cars. Now that we are older, we aren't driving longer tha two or three hours without wanting to stop. Most people nedd bathroom breaks unless they are wearing diapers.

EA needs to improve their app. But they got station status in the app, and its somewhat accurate. EA just needs like an API or something to allow Google Maps/Waze ABRP and other maps access to view station status. Not just EA but EVgo, Chargepoint, and ionna when they grow. EA needs to add a way for the dispenser to verify someone has unplugged so people don't see the phantom idle screen and no one has been connected for a while. You would think they can check activity on the control pilot pin of the connector. like 30 or 60 seconds after disconnect to confirm it.
