We bought a Model 3 RWD (LFP) a few months ago but have yet to take a big road trip like this. This video makes me want to pack up the car and embark on a cross country adventure! Nice to know how much fun an EV road trip can be. Thanks for sharing your journey!

Great road trip. I've done quite a bit of Model 3 car camping across the country and the best mattress option I've found is a 6" memory foam bunk bed mattress ($100!). It slides into the trunk perfectly with the rear seats down. Super comfortable, but makes the rear seats unusable during the entire trip - not a problem if you're solo. My TesMat mattress is okay, but not very agreeable with my back. I'm 6'4" and 300#. On an overnight stop like Omaha, charge more than you think you need upon arrival in order to make it to the next stop. A cold soak can knock up to 20% off of your next arrival. You probably killed an hour between the 20 minute backtrack and subsequent cold charging. I just did a 4,000 mile trip from Seattle to Green Bay in a 2018 Model S with 360,000 miles. Should've filmed it!

I have a 2023 M3 RWD with LFP also. I did a Phoenix to Pittsburgh to Minniapolis to Mt. Rushmore, SD to Phoenix this summer. 5,200 miles. ZERO issues!!

Thanks for the helpful content. Would it be better to just wait until the charge kw drops to 100 or so. Saving a stop etc. Also how did the rear wheel drive handle in the snow?
@EVMotoring16 күн бұрын
@@billcaulway9910 it handles great in the snow compared to most other RWD. Calculating whether or not to skip a stop is based on how close to the highway exit it is. Most Tesla chargers are right off the highway.

Thanks for the real world data in less than ideal conditions. All my future vehicles will be BEV. I took a screenshot and you reported something like 2.94/mile/kw. What speed were you doing predominantly? It looked like you were moving pretty fast where there are long stretches with 80 mph speed limits in UT for example.
@EVMotoring16 күн бұрын
@@walterbright1396 I always travel at the pace of traffic so 80 in Utah and 75 in Nebraska. I only slow down if I’m cutting it too close on the battery.

It looks like the majority of superchargers you were using were version 2 in Iowa. Why was that?

I also have a M3 LFP and enjoyed the video. I'm curious if taking interstates 55 to 44 to 40 would have been more efficient because of the slightly warmer temperatures, being further south. I'm thinking the battery would have pre-conditioned less and maybe you would have had fewer stops. Even though Google says this route would take a hour longer, maybe you would have made up for it with fewer charging stops. Would be interested in your thoughts. Thanks again for the videos.

That seemed like a crazy number of stops for a roadtrip. What was the total number of stops?
@EVMotoring18 күн бұрын

Next trip, use seat warmer and turn off climate control. Gain many miles between charges. Just a thought

For commenters concerned about how many stops, we drive a couple hours and take a break. If ypu time your breaks and meals around charging stops, you aren't "wasting" time. We have always traveled with kids and pets so frequent stops were a part of traveling with our gas cars. Now that we are older, we aren't driving longer tha two or three hours without wanting to stop. Most people nedd bathroom breaks unless they are wearing diapers.
