Blisters kind of, sort of, suck! Laughed at the description and video of the lucky ant. Hope the blister didn't give you much more trouble. At first, when a leaf got stuck on my trekking poles, I tried to get it off but then I learned that sooner or later, the leaf would just naturally come off. John from MI

Happy birthday! Pro tip from a guy whose shoes have frozen: if they're wet and it's going to be cold, wrap them in a trash bag & keep them in the warm spot between the sleeping bags, or even inside your bag. This happened to me almost 50 years ago and I never made that mistake again.

Hey I hear ya about the temps. I was just camping for a week and the lows got down to 30 degrees. My quilt is a 20 degree quilt but that was stretching my limits. Question: Why do you always film in Portrait? I know when it's on your chest, and hiking, it would be but if you are holding the phone, seems like we could see more with landscape. So many water crossings...I'm heading to CO soon to visit my son and grands. Will be in Denver, Boulder and the Springs. Are you still doing the Podcast? What a nice birthday surprise!!! Happy Birthday!!! John from MI
@JulianaChauncey29 күн бұрын
I usually do landscape (all the other hikes have been) but for this one I put my phone in my chest pocket for every water crossing so it could record and I could have both hands free for my trekking poles, so I ended up keeping it that way for all the clips - it’ll go back to landscape after this trail

When you camp in the cold, consider taking two lighter fluid burning pocket warmers with you. They last 12 hours and are twice as warm as the chemical ones. With the warmers, you can warm yourself or dry your shoes and socks overnight. Nice video. Scratch between Harpers' eyes for me. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

Seems like you're always doing water crossings, and having wet feet constantly can't be good. Serious question, how do you dry your feet?
@JulianaChauncey6 ай бұрын
Honestly… I kind of don’t. I try at lunch but the daylight is short so my breaks are short too… I can’t fully blame the shoe for the oncoming foot problems because they are always wet, but I wouldn’t feel safe through some of these barefoot due to slippery rocks and/or fast water… I’ve thought about how if I ever did this trail again I’d bring a second pair of shoes for the water crossings, but even then I’d have to budget time to take off shoes and socks, switch shoes, dry feet, switch back, for each one.. and with how consistent they are that would just eat up the day

The torso length of rei and most day packs are 17 inches. I have a 14/15 torso .. they are all too long for short people. Hurt my back carrying one .. don’t recommend for short people. I’m 4’10. I have to use osprey women’s exclusive xtra small UL backpack. It’s 38 liters but the only backpack that doesn’t hurt me and is my torso size. I tried children’s daypacks but they are like 12 torso length so too small. There are lots of children’s items that do work better for short people. Like trekking poles , snow shoes. Skis .. . Highly recommend north face trail running shoes over altra . As they are too square and my feet aren’t that wide .. I trip in Altra . So love north face vectiv enduris . All of vectiv are amazing shoes.

I’m 5’1 and haven’t had issues with the flash pack - I use it on short day hikes where all I’ll need to bring is a light jacket or rain coat, a water bottle, dog bags, and a snack.. how much weight were you typically putting in it when you found it was giving you back pain?
@valeriefromoregon6 ай бұрын

@@valeriefromoregon you’re giving advice to short people in general, which 5’1 is a part of. I’m just wondering if you’re overloading an 18 liter “flash” pack if it’s causing you back pain
@elkins44066 ай бұрын
It's really hard finding UL packs that fit short torsos. It's even harder to find something that's comfortable for someone who *isn't* short or petite at all, but still has a very short torso. Gregory packs tend to fit people with those proportions wonderfully, but they're heavy packs.

@JulianaChauncey6 ай бұрын
It is in FarOut however the app was having issues where if I zoomed in at all the red line would disappear, so I couldn’t really check against the maps at all because for the most part it just showed my location arrow and no trail line… I think they’ve fixed it since, but at the time the maps were effectively useless

Thanks for another great video! If you're really interested in getting into hammock camping I highly recommend checking out Dutchware Gear, Hammock Gear, and Warbonnet Outdoors as a source for hammocks, tarps, and accessories. They make gear at very fair price points and it's much better than the Eno and other Amazon brand stuff. It will tend to be lighter weight and pack down more as well to be used for backpacking. When sleeping in a hammock you lay diagonal to be flat across the bottom, you need an 11' or longer hammock to really achieve this. The Eno's are 9'-10' and not comfortable for more than lounging for most people.
@JulianaChauncey6 ай бұрын
I’ve considered looking into hammocking on longer trips but so far it’s just car camping that I like to sleep in my hammock for! I’ll keep those brands in mind if I do consider longer trips :)

Regarding pillow, the one you brought up (Nemo Fillo) is essentially the heaviest option that's reasonable to backpack with. There are much lighter options, like the Sea to Summit Aeros, but the Fillo is the only that that actually FEELS like a pillow, not an inflatable bag. The layer of memory foam and the cloth cover makes all the difference. For me, it's one of my luxury items, it's just so damn comfy and I sleep so much better, extra weight be damned.
@JulianaChauncey6 ай бұрын
You might have me sold just with that feedback haha - I usually stuff any extra clothes into my backpack and use that as a pillow, so if I’m adding weight for one it better feel pretty dang pillow-y 😂
