@@PrecisionMike I'm not too sure. I mean it would make sense to have the same for the estate and salon, but with the lower model estates having a leveling system on the rear. Looks good question alot of time went into the metal work on each side of the zebra wood and amp rack. Would it be possible to modify the side panels you built and show more of the metal work trim? I assume the wheel arches are a compromise and why you went over them. I can still see the top of the Metal panels it just seems to disappear under the sides you built (Panels seem overlap it) Unless I am not seeing it right and its minimal. Also when you wrap the sides/finish them out suggestions on consistent theme and put metal trim on them (Carpet/vinyl/metal borders and or insets and even some of the wood elsewhere plus visible hardware (Gold and silver mix). Unless you are going for a stock carpeted side look with the highlighted center (Components and Rack etc) Completely impressed with the Fab work and the detail, love the moveable brackets for the lower potion. I feel your statement on the hundreds of hours you have invested. I built my truck over 2 years and it was nearly every weekend.
@PrecisionMike14 күн бұрын
Hello @Oldnobrand ! Thanks for the detailed comment. You are correct, I have spent a ton of time on building all of these panels and I still have more to go. When these parts are complete, the entire trunk area will be carpeted with the same tan carpet (matches the interior OEM carpet). So none of the work will be exposed. My hope is that is all flows nicely, and that the seams are tough to see, or invisible. I think I am going to run a couple of strips of zebrawood on the side panels. Thanks for the compliments, more content coming soon!

Hi Mike. To start with - those side panels came out REALLY nice. I would argue they are the very definition of precision, stellar work. One thing I was wondering about is related to the carpeting of the areas in the car that the panels will meet up. Considering those areas are now covered with Dynamat leading up to the very edges - how will you finish those edges that will be visible along the trunk opening? Already looking forward to the next episode of this awesome build log 🙂
@PrecisionMike14 күн бұрын
@carlnorrbom - Hey Carl! I am not too worried about carpeting the areas that have Dynamat. Just before I carpet, I will fill in any low spots as needed, to ensure that all surfaces are smooth. I think I have the seams, and where the carpet will roll on an edge vs be a straight cut, figured out. Thanks again for the comments and compliments, this fuels me! More videos coming soon!

One more thing... consider epoxy resin its more expensive but it wont shrink as badly as polyesther. You can also get fillers (structural, fairing) and different hardeners (they have slow cure, fast cure, clear cure). The fillers are all powders so you can have a can of the structural one and use that like kitty-hair, or you can have the fairing one and it sands easier than bondo. And... very little smell.
@PrecisionMikeАй бұрын
@dakenned1 - Thanks again!

@dakenned1 - Hey buddy! I LOVE the idea of F1 style tech to build parts, but I am really trying to maintain the old school ways "we used to do it". That said, I do have regrets about how I built these. I wish I added battons (as others have suggested) to reduce the amount of filler needed. Oh well, I will get these done and get past it. Thanks for watching!
@MrPat8703Ай бұрын
It breaks my heart that you didn't use batten strips across the ribs to support the fleece. It would have saved you hours of work and used less than 1/4 the amount of filler
@PrecisionMikeАй бұрын
@MrPat8703 - Thanks man, I really appreciate it. You nailed it. Did you see the part where I was going to add some additional strips? But then I thought that would be "overdoing it". Now I am in kitty hair hell, this sucks. I think I will fill in the deepest spots with some strips of plywood. I am really looking forward to these being done, and moving on to the next part of the build. Its been over 20 years since I did this kind of fiberglass work, clearly I am rusty. Thanks for the sympathy, more "precision" work coming soon...

Looking great. Labor of love, for sure. 👍🏼. I once rebuilt a fiberglass boat, replacing all the rotten ribs and stringers with brand new to allow for a below deck fuel tank and installing a Nidacore deck. I remember grinding the old fiberglass for 16 1/2 hours in preparation to adhere the new. Respirator and full body suit. It wasn’t fun 🤩. I was taught never to apply anything to shiny resin, but instead scuff it up for better adhesion. I hope you’re wearing your respirator when not filming. 😊 Keep up the great work!!!

For any future work I'd consider using dyna-glass for fiber filler and rage for non-fiber filler. both are so much easier to work with than bondo brand stuff. prices are a lot more than they were just a couple years ago, but ease of work (IMO) would still be worth it. Same could be said about the fiberglass resin. I used to get mine from US Composites. Their website is right in the era of the BMW (haha), but the resin flows SO much nicer than the really thick bondo brand stuff does. Love watching the rebuild of this legend btw. I got to hear it back in '92. If I only knew then what I knew now about sound... sigh, oh well it was still an experience I won't forget.

@hiresaudiocosta873Ай бұрын
@@PrecisionMike Thanks so much, Mike. The 10,000 hours was me trying to learn how to tune and teaching myself about time alignment, and learning how to recognize what each frequency sounds like. I tried using REW and a microphone, I used analog EQT and analog phase shift controllers, then I got into the realm of DSPs. I tried Helix, Mosconi for a brief moment, Arc audio, and then Mini DSP. I also fiddled around with Dirac room correction on both the mini DSP as well as my NAD preamp. I switched to higher grade microphone, used perfectly positioned microphone locations using strings hanging from the ceiling measured out in a perfectly symmetrical box, with tape marking elevation on said strings. Or course, over the years with driver, amplifier, and wiring upgrades, every swap caused many more hours of adjustment. Mostly all adjusts were done by ear. Bottom line, after all those hours of fiddling, I did an ok job, but I would say that I never really “tuned” the system. I was what I could call “ fiddling” or “playing around making adjustments” trying to get it to sound right. Bottom line, just recently, when Miguel Rios flew up to the Northeast and brought his JL Max and used his skills to get my system dialed in, I can proudly say thanks to Miguel, that the system is tuned. The soundstage width is about 150 degrees, the depth on some tracks can reach about 80 feet in front of the windshield. The instrument tonality is lifelike and realistic, the imaging is three dimensional, fleshed out and unbelievably holographic. The incredible size of my soundstage was because of the work Steve Head did on my midrange enclosures. I just had an audiophile friend come take a demo and he got goosebumps, mentioned the open and airy sound, noted the instrument tonality, was In disbelief of the center image stating I had hidden martin Logan panels in the windshield, then went on to mention the background singers were flanking him and singing in his hears, yet but so far away. He also mentioned the realistic tonal characteristics of every instrument. He has heard almost every incarnation of my system over the last several years. He said that it’s the best it’s ever sounded and “people need to hear this”. Problem is my health has taken a downturn and I ended up in the hospital the day before yesterday. I no longer have the strength and ability to make it to shows. So the only way others will get to experience the system is if they come to me. Unfortunately, I’m not sure how much longer my time here on earth I’ll be around. I wished to share my creation with as many people as possible, as do you with your creation once it’s finished. For me, It looks like that’s not going to happen.

I think going with the metal rod on the top will work better than wood pieces as you will get a much cleaner, more precise edge. The advantages during the fabrication were quite obvious as well. Beautiful Car, very nice informative video. However, I have to take issue with your assertion that there is no height difference between the sport settings. I have seen a video showing that there is indeed a height adjustment made between the different airmatic settings, for a total of 4 heights (if you include vehicle rising mode) with sport 2 being the lowest. it is VERY miniscule, but it does happen. Can be confirmed with measurements and everything, as well as owners manuals information I think sport is -.6 and sport 2 (or sport+) is -1.0. It works this way on my CLS, perhaps this is different from the E-class, but I doubt it.
