I made this, was a hit. Everyone loved it and was easy to make. I didn't have any buttermilk so I used regular milk and vinegar instead.

I think using the blue solar cover material would probably work better

You can use beeswax, paraffin wax, G1000 wax (a blend of paraffin wax and beeswax), you can use re-waxing spray they use for waxed jackets (e.g. Romney s wax spray), you could also simply use special waterproofers such as Saphir Super Invulner or Collonil Carbon Pro… My personal recommendation is Collonil Carbon Pro.
