I prefer males because they are larger and more muscular. Just in case some breaks into our home, I think a male would do a better job of protecting us until I get am able to get my pistol. Our latest RR (Ramses) chose us. He was super laid back at the breeder and climbed into our son's lap and fell asleep. Two years later and he is the most active dog we ever had. He tricked us!

Nowadays you can do laparoscopic sterilization surgery that, albeit more expensive, is much less traumatic for the dog and recovery time is a week without major hassles besides stopping your and other dogs from licking the small wounds. We just went through it with our golden retriever and we’ll do the same procedure for our female Ridgeback. We also went through a full heat cycle with the Golden Retriever, with an intact male in the house. It was… challenging. 😂

We love your videos and have had Ridgies for 25 years, so cherish those moments. We just lost our beautiful Scarlet girl from heart failure after a weird infection at only 9 - far too soon for our big fierce, protective cuddle bunny.

I"ve never commented on a youtube video before, but have to commend this video for everyone interested in acquiring a ridgeback. This guy gets it. Everything he says is spot on. Of course, there's much more to know than a 7 minute video can cover. I'm not sure if he has more, but if he has some sort of program to which you can subscribe--and he can start a college fund for his kids--I am sure you will learn something from it. I don't know this guy, but I know Rhodesian ridgebacks. I've had 9 over the past 23 yrs. I don't lure course, show or hunt them. But I let them loose on a local greenway at from 5-6:30 am so they (2 M/F pairs--one pair 9 and one pair 2 1/2) can do their thing. This guy didn't get to it, but exercise is the #2 need of ridgebacks. #1 is sensory stimulation. Leashless (but safe; they are fake biters in play, and the handshake, esp with nonridgebacks, is CRUCIAL, as this guy gets) dog-interactive play. We've the obligatory large dog door. (It's huge but gets bent when 2 have to go out simultaneously to rush something that's gotten into the fenced backyard.) I read that "to see" in classical Greek meant 2 things. One, as we use the infinitive: to receive. Second, to transmit. Once a red tailed hawk hit a squirrel at the far end of our pool on a small berm. I was on the pool deck, about the middle. At the other end were 2 ridgebacks. I was electrified by the riveting glares the hawk and ridgebacks issued to each other. I could almost hear it sizzle. But be forewarned, ridgebacks are a fulltime job and, even if you have the time and money, an acquired taste. PS 1/9 ridgebacks chased a ball. A couple more would chase it once or twice, even retrieve it sort of, and then look at me, wondering what was going on, if I threw it one more time. But 3/9 were good catchers of anything thrown.

Most paediatricians will advise that pets be kept away from babies for at least a period of 2-3 months. "There are many reasons for this, such as the pets fur getting into the baby's nose or mouth, the pet barking loudly at the little one, the pet unintentionally running into the newborn given great excitement, or even running towards a toy or the doorbell. As well as the transference of faeces to the baby. All of the above can lead to severe problems or unintended injuries to the baby”.

Hallo, I decided 3 years ago in a very special and sad time in my life, to get a Rich. The videos of you absolutly stunning. They are so joyfull to see and what can this is not from earth. He is the 10th dog of my live and I never ever ever seen such a personality. He is pure love and a dreamdog. I never have experienced such goodness. For me every morning when I see his eyes looking at me, I melt like ice in the sun. Thank you and Eko.

You WERE at 666 thumbs up and I got you off the devils number. LOVE THIS VIDEO and will be subbing even though I have a mixed breed 100 plus a few lb. rescue with longish hair. He came from Kansas so not at all used to Minnesota brutal cold and blizzards. Pretty sure it is the Hurtta Expedition he has and his nose goes up in the air to slip his head in as soon as he sees it. Would love to get him the HOODED one in the intro, but nothing was mentioned about that. Haven't found it anywhere in my searcbes either. I will be subscribing now that I found you....great voice and loved the content and 'action'. At one point we had a wolf husky and a purebred siberian with blue eyes. The only time we didn't do rescues. Thank you for the ridgeback education too.

I've had Ridgebacks since I was a child, nearly 38 years. Growing up my family had mostly males Since being an adult I've only had females. The cliches and stereotypes are true. The males are easy going love bugs. The females are wild, difficult, loving wildflowers.

Penny would be 10yo now, I just got a 3 mo puppy and a 4 month old Husky companion. They match in endurance playing tag together for hours if I don’t separate them to nap, eat and rest… lol both can react aggressively if hurt by their sharp teeth while playing, behavior I’m correcting their behavior closely. Nice video! ❤

Hi, I'm from CA and looking for an ethical breeder and would like anyone's help and recommendation please. I do not plan to breed or do shows. Just looking to have another RR in my life. It's been 3yr, RIP to my Nova she was 12.5yr and the best part of my life. I rescued her from my local animal shelter when she was 3mo. Would love to be a RR parent again

There is no money in dog breeding. Not a dime. You spend so much money doing it right. Showing and going to events to be around other Rhodie owners and breeders is expensive in itself. You have to spend a bunch of time learning a showing to have a chance of knowing what you are doing so you can make ethical decisions. I have done everything you can imagine with these dogs, but mostly just used them on my farm for what they are made for. That's something they really love. My family has shown all over the US, bred litters, and we still do a lot of breed rescue and just hanging out with them. Please I beg you don't get a dog from a backyard breeder. So many of those dogs end up in rescue is is a pitiful thing. Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue of the United States is a great place to start if you want to get a nice dog and do some good at the same time. Please spay and neuter and don't buy dogs from backyard breeders or the Amish.

I have had two female and one male Ridgeback. There is no question for me that the male is easier to train, more loyal and protective and just totally easier than the more aloof female.

My wife wanted another dog. I said no, definitely not. She did what most women do, Yea you guessed it, emotional manipulation. You know, the stuff Eve did to Adem in the Garden of Eden. Two weeks later we had a little RidgeBack girl in our house. And in our bed. Now six weeks later my wife is upset that little Storm stole my heart. She accuses me of spending more time with 'my' dog than with her. Well, what did she expect would happen?
