Help me I have brand new 75 gallon salt water tank with brand new salt water from the pet store with wave makers and heaters but I want to get a canister filter it’s the Amos brand it pump about 265 gallons an hour and I’d love to add ceramic balls and better filter Media I’d only want 6 fish some fire gobi’s and bangai cardinal fish and maybe a yellow tang or a angel fish would I be able to get away with it ? Maybe a couple soft corals as well
@saltypops42768 күн бұрын
That filter should work for you. Remember to let the tank cycle and build good bacteria before you start loading it up.

Looking at your tank your corals dont move a whole lot. I have ALOT of fkow in my tank I thought everything was supposed to move so that it prevents detritus buildup? I'm still rather new to saltwater so any suggestions to how much flow I should have is appreciated. Thanks
@saltypops427614 күн бұрын
Hello. You are correct. Movement is vitally important to coral health. My flow looks low because I turn it off / down for videoing. Can’t really get a good pic of the corals if they are moving a lot or the top water isn’t still. I did a video on flow if you are interested. Hope you are enjoying the hobby.

Hello. It really depends on what you want to keep in it. On my Fluval Flex 15 gal I keep mostly bubble tip anemone and I did not reduce it at all. However if you are just keeping lower light stuff, LPS and softies, you could reduce by 30%.

On all my tanks in target salinity of 1.026 (35 ppm). As for alkalinity. That varies. For my LPS dominated and Anemone tanks. They are low 7s. For my SPS tank it is high 8s.

I’m using your schedule with 3 AI Blades in a 2:1 Grow to Glow ratio. Can you help me adjust to achieve a deeper blue during the blue phase?
@saltypops4276Ай бұрын
The quick answer is, you need to increase the intensity of the Blue OR decrease the intensity of the others OR a combination of both. Royal Blue appears brighter than Blue. See bulb ratio below compare to 16HD: Prime 16 HD - RB : Violet + UV is 2:1 Your setup has 3:1 which will make the overall blue much brighter. Prime 16 HD - B : Violet + UV is 2:1 Your setup is 1:1. So the Blue LEDs that produce the darker blue are less prevalent in the Blades vs Prime, which is why you are getting a darker blue with the Salty Pops program. A little manual adjusting and you should be set.

Are your phosphates out of control?
@andrewmckibbin92432 ай бұрын
Just starting my new tank and lighting has been the most confusing thing. Had a “homemade” saltwater tank about a year ago but had so much trouble I gave it up and broke it down. Recently was gifted a AIO tank with lots of gear so I figured I would do it right this time. This tank is a 20 long innovative marine tank and I currently have a AI Prime 16HD mounted 12 inches above the tank. I am using your schedule to start and asked if you had any advice. Or at least why you have 2 ramps? I haven’t seen that in any of the online forums (I know I am guilty of looking at those but I have found that everyone has different opinions). I know you don’t use any moonlight but are there any benefits to not using moonlight to using moonlight?
@saltypops42762 ай бұрын
Hello. I do 2 ramps because I am following a bulb light pattern where channel one comes on early then later channel 2 for a mid day bump in par. This is what would naturally occur in the ocean mid day when the sun is at it’s brightest.
@BH0t84982 ай бұрын
Great timeline video. I too prefer natural predators over chemicals. I’m having the same issue in my 32 bio cube. Just ordered extra cleaning army of 15 blue leg hermits, 3 turbos, nassarius snails, cerith, and Astrea. I Already have a couple hermits, nassarius snail and 2 urchins, but they need more help. I never have much luck with keeping snails except the nassarius snail, but a few people have suggested turbo snails. So I’m going to give them a try. I will also do daily pics to document So now that the GHA is gone (under control) will your tank have enough to keep the turbos fed? Or will they die off
@saltypops42762 ай бұрын
If you run into issues let me know and I’ll help out. As for the turbos food source, I have been providing seaweed for them to eat as I hate for something to just die. So they are doing fine, I give them some twice a week and the tank continues to be algae free. Blue leg hermits are great for hair algae but do not eat enough to wipe it out on their own. Astraea are by far my favorite snails as they eat a lot for their size, so good choices here. Glad to see you also got Mexican turbo snails, hopefully they are large ones when they arrive. Funny you mention not having good luck keeping snails, many snails do not live very long in the home aquarium, 6 months give or take, which is why people constantly have to add more. However, the Astraea snails, I have some that I have had for 2+ years and Mexican turbos live a long time as well.

Hi Salty pops. Can I run your light schedule on the hydra 32 HD ? At what percentage should I turn it down for my tank , where the light is placed 14 inches above water and the tank size is 28x18x18 inches .
@saltypops42762 ай бұрын
Yes. The program does perfectly on a 32. As for reducing the intensity. Really depends on the corals in the tank. If you have a mixed reef with SPS at the top and LPS below, no need to change anything. If you are not running a lot of SPS and more heavy on LPS, I would reduce 30%. Please do a manual calculation of each spectrum instead of using the 2 finger slide.

A question, by having the sponges without changing for weeks, are you more likely to increase your nutrients? Isn't it better to put Perlon and change it every 3 days?
@saltypops42762 ай бұрын
Hello. The whole reason I am rinsing and putting it back in for a 6 month life is to hold Bioload. I don’t leave it in indefinitely and rotate with the other pads to avoid the nutrient issue. But if I through it away all the time, my ability to hold bioload is diminished.
@franroman20702 ай бұрын
Hello Salty, so I put the sponges on it and don't clean them until 3 months have passed to maintain the biological load?
@saltypops42762 ай бұрын
@@franroman2070 hello. No. You need to clean them every 4 weeks. Take them out and rinse them with tank water in a bucket until the water is mostly clear to get rid of the detritus. Then put them back. You will do this every 4 weeks to keep them clean. I assume you have 2 pads. Each pad stays in for 6 months total time with the every 4 week cleaning. Space out the replacement of the 2 pads so you are changing 1 every 3 months.
@franroman20702 ай бұрын
Thanks Salty, the last question, can I use Perlon instead of filter sponges? And so I can throw the perlon every week?
