As a former professional driver in a city like los angles including down town and lax airport. Indiana is by far the worst city i have visited and lived in. There either too fast or too slow in fast lane. No flow of traffic. Alot of cars on side of the road and it stayes there for many days. The state dosnt do dick about the roads or the junker cars barley and unsafely rolling b down the freeway. And ive seen junk and rocks fall off of trucks from all the construction. Big rigs completely suck at driving way too fast... waiting for camera to be delivered cause accident is bound to happen. Def get front and rear camera

My additions: 1. Municipal water is EVEN WORSE than in Texas. You basically need a water softening system, and houses are usually built with hookups (but for some reason, the softening systems are not included). It will dry your skin and scalp; it tastes horrible, and it will etch your glassware and put scale on water fixtures and glass shower doors. If you rent an apartment, you will have to hire your own plumber to accomplish some sort of regulated water treatment; oddly, the owners of such dwellings don't seem to view it as a return on their investment (in longer life of fixtures, appliances and water heaters) to do something in this regard for their tenants. 2. Per the driving comment in the video, people here seem to fantasize they are contestants in the Indy 500 all year round on the highways. You need to assume at all times that you are surrounded by morons, and expect every second of your highway or inner city travel will be fraught with their stupidity. (This is what used to be called Defensive Driving). EDIT: 2.(b) No annual vehicle inspections. That's right - absolutely no check as to the condition of your brakes, tires, lights, emissions, or mirrors/wipers. One might be relieved at not paying every year for this safety appraisal of one's vehicle, until one considers that it allows people who don't take proper care of their cars and trucks to stay on the road and endanger YOU. Even itchy-for-secession Texas requires this, and I regard it as a protection for ME when I am on the road. 3. Poor appreciation of contemporary furnishings and architecture. Midwestern homes are butt-ugly in the main, and you will be surrounded by people (and builders) that combine weird colors and materials. Perhaps this is a genetic nod to the awful taste of Germanic forebears... And furnishings - OMG - just try to find any furniture that has a tenth of the class you would find in stores like Roche Bobois or Cantoni in many other large US cities. There are some _decent_ MCM examples, but too far and too few between. The state needs an influx of new blood from elsewhere to remedy this. 4. The food scene is improving, but if you have a craving for spice and heat, find a dive in a diaspora community. Mainstream restaurants' idea of salsa is little more than ketchup to veteran eaters of Tex-Mex or Thai cuisine. 5. Moronic State Republicans who refuse to legalize recreational or medicinal marijuana. So you have to drive to Ohio (!) or Illinois or Michigan to get THC gummies that might help you relax or sleep better. Lost revenues for Indiana... this might also be due to the heavy lobbying hand of Eli Lilly and other big pharma entities who would rather sell you toxic manmade drugs for your sleep issues... 6. The oxymoronic status of having fantastic universities, great engineering/manufacturing history and credentials, while at the same time having so many low-paying jobs. All of the above said, the seasons are beautiful, and unlike Texas, there are four real ones; they seem to appreciate nature and wildlife here (if you like watching birds, this is a great state for it). One of the benefits of their sports craziness is the absence of people on the highways when important (to them) sporting events are happening, so the rest of us can be safer and more alone. Plus it's situated well for day trips to a whole bunch of other states and interesting cities. Another good thing is that you can actually purchase hard liquor in grocery stores, even on Sundays.

As someone who has lived in Indianapolis and worked in Carmel for a couple decades, I love the roundabouts. Roundabouts greatly increase traffic flow. They cut my drive to work from 15 minutes on a good day to 10 minutes on a bad day. They cut my drive home from 30 minutes on a good day to 15 minutes on a bad day.

If you're going to do any traveling or shopping to the downtown area (even Broad Ripple these days), make sure you practice your right to Constitutional Carry - and steer clear of the east side of Indy.

You left off the most obvious sport - auto racing - in particular the Indy 500. Downtown is very walkable! If you are from NYC, LA or Chicago, Indy probably won’t be snooty enough for you. During the summer it is great regarding sunset not happening until after 9pm - great for doing things after work, bicycling, golf, swimming, baseball.

Factually, the roundabouts cause more accidents than stop lights, as admitted by even former Mayor Brainerd and city counsel. The difference is that the accidents are glancing rather than rear-enders, acknowledged. The issue is that roundabouts are terrible for pedestrians and cyclists, and that roundabouts are very sensitive to traffic volume. Many north Indianapolis (Carmel, Westfield, etc) roundabouts are simply too small and tight for the increasing volume of traffic as the area becomes overly population dense. Roundabouts that involve Meridian 31 exits are particularly troublesome for the future. Another example is 146 at Towne Road, which will soon have an incredibly dense infrastructure of townhomes, Lifetime Fitness, Krogers, etc. and development on 146 to Ditch Rd make it a future trouble spot.

Isn't Indianapolis proper on pace for record setting pedestrian deaths? How you can evaluate driving and not note that the city has had to form a commision to address the issue - Vision Zero? Even two vehicle collsions are spiking. There are battles to stop right on red and people think their bill of rights have been violated. Not a very accurate protrayal for the city...maybe the suburbs.

There are definitely some bad drivers, and by bad I mean rude & impatient. Seems the closer you get into the Indy metro, the worse they become. I'd be curious if they're transplants from other major cities because imo it's increased in the past few years & this driving behavior is not seen much outside Indy proper (even in say Greenwood or Avon) or elsewhere in IN. Just had a mustang yesterday cut me & another driver off as there was a wreck in the lane & we were waiting for the other lane's traffic to pass. Guess that was just too much for him. He's lucky the other car coming stopped when it did so there wasn't another head on collusion. In the same area another time (south of 79th street), saw a car cutting & passing several others via the left turn lane but still went straight. Another person rolling down the window & littering (I always honk at these people). Just blows my mind that some people are that rude & inconsiderate! But from my experience it seems concentrated to that area. If you're comparing to other major cities, it likely isn't that bad though. Most drivers are pretty chill.

I have lived in MANY cities. I find drivers here basically are quite 'nice'. People don't use their horns much, they generally will not try and crowd you out. I can only think of a couple of road-rage incidences myself. The worst drivers are the young and those with European cars. The only thing that is really bad here are people running red lights, possibly this is the worst place I have lived with running reds. So not angels, but I'm glad my kid got to learn to drive here rather than Chicago or the East Coast.

They are absolute trash...they are clueless at a 4-way stop sign. I'm from San Diego and seeing that happen was a super rare occurrence. Also Indy people don't know how to zipper into a single lane. There's some other things, but yeah they suck at driving

Winter hasn’t been nearly as bad the past 5 years or so. It gets cloudy and cold. But snow hasn’t been bad. February is the worst. It usually doesn’t get real cold until January. It warms up in March. I live in Greenfield, it’s okay. There’s just not a lot to do here.

Hey Jason - Really enjoy your videos; super helpful. Found out today I'm moving to Indianapolis for work next month. I'm moving from the Tampa area, but I've lived in Kansas City, St Louis, and Minneapolis, and I grew up in Nebraska, so I know the Midwest. I've never been to Indy and don't know a soul, so I'm hoping you can give me some ideas as to where to live. I'm a young 56 yo single male. I'm more of an urban guy than rural or suburbs. Coincidentally, a young woman in my apartment complex recently told me she grew up in Indianapolis and recommended Carmel and Zionsville. I watched your video on Carmel and it looks interesting; don't know if it's my thing, however. I'll be working downtown for a while, but the company is doing a massive investment in Lebanon, IN, so will be commuting there eventually. I really don't have the time to fly in and tour around, so any advice you have would be greatly appreciated! Matthew

For me, moving to northern Indiana from NorCal, it isn't the snow, grew up with that in NorCal, it is the endless grey days. I didn't affect me for probably the first 5 years here, I have been here 10 years now and the long endless grey days are starting to affect me. LOL The sky is just flat grey for weeks on end. So if you move to northern Indiana, think of SAD like they have in Seattle and get a SAD light for the winter. Love it here regardless!!!! 💗💗💗

I used the bus a few times last year for medical reasons and to go to an event with someone that didn’t drive, and I was quite impressed. I went downtown from the northwest side and the far east side. It worked well for those trips in the early morning and in the evening returning after 8 pm. The buses are just not crowded until you get real close to downtown, but the crowds clear at the transit center. I felt safe and the buses were clean. The big negative about the system to me is you just can’t go across the city without switching buses and spending nearly two hours, terrible for a working person. I’ve used bus systems around the US and Europe in my life, Indy is getting better but still needs work.

We moved to Carmel in 1993. We raised our three children there in the Brookshire neighborhood. The school system was excellent but it was not without its challenges. In 2010 we moved south to Franklin, Indiana, to a home in the country with acreage. People in Carmel thought we had come on hard times. No, it was a choice - we saw how Hamilton county was growing. We wanted a slower lifestyle. After we relocated my son said to me, “ Dad, we should have moved five years ago”. We love Johnson county and all it has to offer. I would never move back to Carmel.

Indianapolis has a long way to go to bring more walkability to more areas. Walkability is lacking to the degree that you can live, shop, eat or go to a bar by foot in large parts of the metro area. Once you're out of downtown Indianapolis, it's a crapshoot on safe and effective walkability. Sidewalks just disappear in some areas and drop you onto the side of roads with zero traffic barriers to protect you; same with bike paths. I live within a mile of all kinds of services, but continuous sidewalks of more than a few blocks force me to drive to nearby trails and parks, grocery stores, medical offices, the library, movies, everything!
