Bullet proof my ass my 2005 amg factory spec meaning from new had a catastrophic gearbox failure at 182000 km.This car has never been abused as I am an old man and look after my baby. The problem is the grey area and Mercedes Benz do not have the balls to stand up and face up.They say the gearbox is filled with lifetime oil but everybody else tell me you have to service it at every 40000 miles or 60000km.But lots of people warn you against servicing the gearbox.Mercedes must come man up and tell us what is the right thing to do.As I now face a major repair bill.If the car was neglected they can come and inspect it as I look after my baby. One change I had to make was to replace the air suspension system as this was a serious safety concern when they go as I found out losing one on the highway. It ripped my right hand side fender nearly completely off. On Mercedes benz world I also read that these transmissions is only built to last about 200000 km maximum. This is akin to fraught from my viewpoint. And don't come and tell me you have similar mercs with transmissions that had done many more miles than this. This is a disgrace as I had an older V8 merc with 500000km on the clock without touching the transmission. You will always get assholes telling you that you cannot afford this type of car or you neglected it.The truth is I am merc biggest fan in the world I will send them an old book on how mercs used to be built and what they used to stand for. They have lost the plot totally. There cars used to have personality and had the world's biggest reputation for reliability now that is gone. They now make quantity instead of quality.

I am sorry to hear about that. I agree that MB quality isn’t the same as it used to be in 80s and early 90s, not even close. However, the 722.6 transmission in your 2005 car is very reliable by modern day standards. Not many transmission in highly powerful performance cars will go as many miles as yours without service. MB did say it was sealed for life in the beginning but later they changed their recommendation to 40k miles. You can find used transmissions for relatively cheap or have your transmission rebuilt which will be much cheaper than going through the dealer.

Don't have a M156, but a MY 2008 E220CDI (OM646 Evo. delievered to inital buyer in Desember 2007), a 2016 GLC220 (OM651), and a 2018 Vito 119 (OM651). I change oil at 20K km or 1 year (whatever comes first). The E class has now 520K km on the odometer with original engine, original turbo, original gearbox. Runs smooth. Used MB Spec 229.5x (Mobil ESP 5W30). Never used additives. Cannot compare a high performance gas gussler to a work horse diesela, but we do use our cars on a daily basis, and quite a bit more than you sir, Considering the climate in Norway with very cold winters, and fairly warm summers (Up to 50 degree Celcius in difference summer vs Winter), they will experience quite a lot of stress during 1 year. The E class is even adjustet to 200bhp and 450Nm, but still performs flawless after 520K km and 17 years of (ab)use MB engines are built to last.

722.6 is close to bullet proof. Just use the right oil (MB 236.14 spec) and change the connector adaptor. Not to much experience with the 722.9 yet (Have it in our GLC, and my Vito work van.), but it seems very reliable as well. Just use correct spec oil and they're good. :)

It’s Mercedes first twin turbo V8 so there is bound to be issues just like their first twin turbo V12. The 4.0L twin turbo is actually more reliable but I’m put off by the cheap flimsy plastic interior in the W213 E class, W205 C class, and newer Mercedes models

Was half a sleep when I watched the video: Did you mention to change the connector adapter while changing oil ? And the importance of using correct specification on the oil? Wrong oil will damage the gearbox. Bad o-rings in the connector will end in oil getting to the external electronic control unit and ruining it (Capillary action).

My 2011 w212 did a bad thing and threw itself into park four times when approaching a stop. This was after an hour on the highway. Mind you this is the first night of me purchasing it. It was silky smooth before this and on the test drive. Now i have vibration at idle and vibration and surging rpms going up hill. Is my transmission toast?

I used to always down shift going downhill. Then, a KZbin video compared the cost of brakes versus a new 7-gtronic. And brakes are even cheaper now that the car is old and I do it all myself. No more warranty? Bye-bye Mercedes dealer and your 5 times price hike. As far as Mobilo, we have Touring. It's like AAA but faster with more options. It annual cost is 2 hours of Mercedes dealer labor. It used to be a good time at Mercedes, but over the years, the ambiance and service went to hell. They exchanged the couch for spikes, charged for fluids I topped off before visiting, all the experienced mechanics quit, and even the accountant fled to BMW. But its a challenge to find qualified mechanics when there is something more complex. Yasin is fanstastic if you can wait 3 months. Its no surprise that people are buying disposable cars, that inflation is out of control and resources are disappearing. Its all related.

Cam shaft adjusters, turbo lines, radiators are thousands of dollars to replace, oil filter housing leaks onto the belt, damages the pulleys, coolant hose in the back of the engine leaks no space for spark plugs removal. The list goes on and on for these, M156 2011 and up can’t go wrong so much more simple.

Great vid! Had a e39 520i with xenons. Installed stereos with amp and sub in the trunk. The stereo wiring next to xenon cables from battery in the rear made the car wine according to revs like @3:36. Didnt mind then, left it as it was. But was 27 at the time 😎 Regret selling it. Kinda individual 😂

Forgot to mention the infamous oil pans, bed plate and rear main seal leaks which are pretty much unavoidable and the most expensive repair. They happen on cars with only 30k miles even and in most cases its an engine out job........really sucks

That may be a good idea in newer 9g transmissions where RPMs stay higher in the Sport mode. In most 7g transmissions the car will upshift to the highest gear if you put it into sport but don’t drive aggressively.

When making a road trip in a hilly area it would be better to use the Tiptronic setting to keep it shifting automatically within 1, 2 , 3 & 4. No? The ratio of the 4th gear in 7 speed transmission is quite close to the 3rd gear in the 5 speed transmission 722.6.
