Love the suit on Julia and the tailoring of it! It's interesting hearing what appeals to other collectors...for me, the Standards leave me a little cold and I don't have any yet. I see the Mod era as being 1967 to 1972. The Mod aesthetic petered out in '69, to my eyes, but I extend to '72 due to the continued use of the TnT mold, most dolls still came with rooted eyelashes and Mattel was still using the black and white tags.

Julia looks smashing in that blue suit .... Looks like a Mattel Julia giftset outfit! And great seeing your Japan Living (you know that I love those!) BTW I'm sure I have told you about 'Longs' (or 'Longs Drugs' as it is known.) I used to visit the ones in Hawaii all the time as there was one just down the road from where I would stay... they're kinda like a big chemist/supermarket and the ones in Hawaii looked so 60's, (they most likely WERE unchanged since the 60s!) which is why I loved visiting them! I used to get my bags of flavoured Kona coffee there. LOL

OK I have to steal all your Standards... or at least one!!! LOL (Or it could be a great birthday present? Hint, Hint! 😜) Yes, I know I already have one (already thanks to you!) but now I need one in the box with her OG swimsuit. Like we've discussed, I saw all those Barbies in white shoeboxes from the Mattel headquarters back then. Now the only ones I remember were the TNTs in their mesh bathing suits (as they intrigued me back then!!!) but as you showed in those German catalogs, it could have been quite possible that they were also in the earlier vintage red helenca swimsuits as Mattel Australia were notorious for using up whatever was on hand and mixing things up, hence all those interesting 'X-files' dolls we have. Did she say whether it was a white shoebox? Your mum's was possibly one of those ones from the Mattel headquarters over here as I remember never seeing those white shoeboxes with 'Barbie' stamped on them sold in any store, but every time my Mum's factory had Barbies (as it was nearby the Mattel headquarters, so employees' kids got their toys for Christmas) they were packaged differently and where in those nondescript boxes. For me, the Mod era definitely is 1967-71/72, the Japan/Mexico/early HK era ... but yes, Malibu is definitely not part of that.

Hi! Excellent work on Christie's outfit! You've got quite some talent! Now, for those older Barbie dolls whose faces turn pale yellow, you can use chalk pastels to bring back the original pigment, some baby pink mixed with a darker raspberry pink applied dry with a fine eyeshadow brush does wonders! I've seen it work!!! You will dust off any excess with a clean brush & voila! You can remove the color with some rubbing alcohol, otherwise it remains even if she gets wet!!! Good luck!!!🎉🎉🎉

For me, the Mod era is 1966 Francie, 1967-1970 Barbie, with some strays in the years that followed. Mod was the mid-to-late 60s fashion influence from the UK, but I feel like the dolls and fashions from 1970 onward started becoming more "All American". Living Barbie with all her posing and all her sporty activity fashions doesn't really feel all that Mod to me, even though there were still influences as far as color scheme and the like, and certainly fashions like "Maxi 'N Mini" were still completely Mod. 1971 to me is the beginning of a new era, and I call it the Malibu era. Malibu Barbie was THE doll of the period, so much so that she was redressed as Olympic dolls as well as Newport Barbie and Sun Valley Barbie. 1971's non-Malibu dolls, like the Live Action dolls, were very American, very youth culture, very back-to-nature, a far cry from Swinging London styles. The preponderance of bell bottom pants, plaid, etc. makes it feel drastically different to me. Even the Victorian-inspired look of Barbie With Growin' Pretty Hair feels less Mod and more 70s to me, even though it does feel more like a throwback to a previous style code. I believe Charlotte Johnson and Carol Spencer disagreed about the design direction for that doll, which is why the 1972 iteration of GPH is much more in keeping with the 70s fashion trends. For me the Malibu era bleeds into 1977 a bit, but that is the start of the SuperStar era, and even though there's still a bit of granola Malibu stuff in the line, that would taper off quite a bit from that point on. So I put the Malibu era as 1971-1976. There are always odd outliers like GPH and Ballerina Barbie in every era that don't quite fit, but we're just talking broad trends here.

I love the story of this doll, and I love that you're keeping her as the original owner had her, with the On The Avenue fashion and the handmade crochet stole. I know a lot of collectors turn their noses up at 'mommy made' stuff, but I'm also a sentimental person and I don't have the heart to just toss stuff like away. A lot of it is really beautifully made, and even the really badly made stuff, if it looks like it was made by a child, I have to keep it and clean it up and store it properly if it's not on a doll. I love to put those kinds of fashions on repro dolls, because usually I steal repro dolls fashions to put on vintage dolls, and I have naked repro dolls lying around. I wonder if there's a way to re-gild the belt? Maybe just some thin self-adhesive gold vinyl over top of the existing substrate?
@DeanReenАй бұрын
Isn't it darling 💖 I think I forgot to mention that she was clearing out her house and selling things for money to give to her family and none of them wanted the dolls. I really wanted to be the one to give the doll a good home, even though she was RELATIVELY cheap I still really couldn't afford it. But that was me all over this year. Digging myself into a hole 😂 Oh! I LOVE Mummy-made stuff. It is full of love, care and history. I like to put my Mummy-made stuff on my clone dolls 😊 Hmm, that's a good idea! I'll have to see if I can find self-adhesive gold vinyl! It sounds like a simple thing but usually those are the things I struggle to find and it always frustrates me 😂

Just an FYI about the handmade wrap--you have it inside out on the doll. I am a crocheter, so I recognized the wrong side of the wrap. Just thought you'd like to know. Your doll is lovely.
@DeanReenАй бұрын
Thanks for letting me know! ❤ I've tried crochet a couple times but i do not have the patience for it 😂 May I ask how one can tell if it is the right side or not? And thank you 😊❤
@karenstimson2683Ай бұрын
There is a right side and wrong side of all crochet stitches, but since most crocheted pieces are made by working one row then turning and working the next, in most stitch patterns you will have both right and wrong sides of the stitches exposed no matter which side of the item is displayed, and that is the case for your wrap; however, your wrap also has an edging row that has been worked around three sides of the piece, involving multiple double crochet stitches in groups of 3 or 4. If you display the wrap with the right side of these stitches showing, it will look better (to someone who knows how crochet should look) than when the wrap is displayed as you have, with the wrong sides of these stitches showing. You can take a close look at both sides of your wrap to get an idea of the different look that the right side and wrong side of these stitches looks like! Some people don’t care about this, but to me it’s always prettier when the right side of an edging, especially, is displayed. Hope this helps ❤️

Beautiful restoration! Have you tried zit cream and sunlight for the remanent of the green ears? If you do cover her face maybe with a cotton pad and soft masking tape to prevent the sun fading her makeup… It works great I have heard…
@DeanReenАй бұрын
Thank you ❤️😘 Yes, I have tried it before and it has worked. But in almost every case the face paint eventually fades as the peroxide moves through the vinyl. It can take years for it to happen and it seems almost impossible to prevent. I wanted to try vinegar as it isn't a heavy duty chemical and it is one ingredient which can be neutralised with another single ingredient (bi-carb soda). It isn't as quick as other methods but I figured it was worth the gamble and I really don't want to cause damage to this particular doll if I can help it.
@SiansoneaАй бұрын
@@DeanReen for dolls with moderate green ear and exceptional, original face paint, I just live with the green. It's not worth risking the fading you mentioned, which I've also experienced. Great original face paint is worth preserving at all costs. I can usually disguise the green a bit.
