I was listening to Katha from Giani Sant Singh Ji Maskeen and they were saying that to reach Parmathma you have to escape KAL (in this context they mean “time”). They said to do this you put your consciousness on Shabad. This really makes sense since the mind is always in the past or future. So being present through the shabad frees you from KAL. I’ve heard of lots of philosophies that time is an illusion. Another thing that I think is really interesting is that this Unstruck melody is in many different philosophies and religions. In Shiva’s cosmic dance, he is holding a drum in one hand and a fire in another. The drum is supposed to represent the sound of creation and the fire is supposed to represent destruction of the universe. The drum is nonphysical so it would be an “unstruck melody”. In Buddhism, (I’m pretty sure it’s in Buddhism), they say that time is not linear. They hit a gong and let it vibrate. They believe that the universe is a vibration of sound similar to the gong. It vibrates and eventually goes back into itself. Really fascinating!

I'm so impressed by your knowledge across various faiths. I think it helps to get a better perspective on our own. Time truly is a fascination concept. As a trekkie, I have always marveled at how sci-fi tries to make sense of it. It has a way of dragging us backwards or forward, in the process robbing us from being truly present in our own lives and causing so much anxiety!

Absolutely! I think this can also apply for the mind too. I’ve noticed sometimes that the constant chatter in the mind becomes very exhausting. But after we listen to/ read Gurbani, it becomes more silent. Almost like how a baby cries constantly, but becomes quiet after they’ve received food from their mother!

I love the baby analogy! Gurbani, after all, is nourishment for the soul. No wonder it has a soothing effect on the swirl that goes on in our minds. Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts! It truly makes my day.❣

I love this analogy, especially towards fear. Always have to remind myself that the troubles I fear aren’t always as bad as they might seem. Another aspect I love is how Gurbani uses the myths and traditions in India during that time. I got a book recently from Amazon. It’s called “Demystifying Myths & Lore in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji” by Maneshwar S. Chahal. This book goes over the background of all of the references Gurbani uses on myths/traditions. Examples of references could be: Vishnu, Sheshnaag, Krishna, etc. It explains the background of the reference and then it also explains the context that is used in Gurbani. It also explains what Gurbani is emphasizing by using this reference. I highly recommend reading this book!!

Thank you! Fear is such a powerful factor in our lives and so often we are not even aware that it is driving us. That makes it all the more important to recognize the true nature of things around us. Thanks also for the book recommendation; I love to hear what others are reading and learning from. I will be reading this book.

The imagery and metaphors used throughout guru granth sahib always evoke the aaha! moment when understood. This particular example, I remember, learning in Jain philosophy as well, when they try to explain the difference between complete and incomplete knowledge of something.

I'm a big fan of the aaha! moment and Gurbani is replete with just the wisdom! I'm not surprised the example here is in Jain philosophy as well, and I plan to look into it more. Thank you!
