If you found the channel helpful and want to give me a gift as a thank you, you can send me some Pokemon cards! I've been collecting them since they started coming out and always enjoy getting new cards! You can use my Amazon Wish List to send me a booster pack or two :) www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1ZTOOLYLZ7C48 For the original video on identifying wood grian on different woods and more on how the wood reacts with each cut, check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWTEkntoidmtaa8

Ahh I love Pokémon sets too, especially one of the recent ones, Paldean fates, I would unfortunately not be able to send you a gift, but I hope someone else could. Quick question, what is it called when you carve into the wood grain, so your blade goes into the grain going across?
@CarvingisFun7 ай бұрын
Like youbare cutting through all the fibers? Cutting across the grain.
@AdamsArt17 ай бұрын
@@CarvingisFun Yes, so for example, if you cut through the straws, all of them would get cut into smaller straws.

Do you know what it's called when you carve into the wood grain going across?Like chiselling into wood grains that go across? So you would cut off a big part.@@CarvingisFun

Cutting with the grain

I watched your other videos but couldn't quite understand why going against the grain didn't work, but now it finally makes sense! The straw metaphor is really good for visualizing the cuts. Thank you for all the wood grain tutorials!

The moment you realize that you're handling sharp, dangerous tools everyday BUT you're not willing to damage straws to avoid getting on your wife's nerves 😂 relatable

Run your finger up the long grain, if it feels smooth you are going with the grain. Feels rough you are going agaist the grain. If you have difficulty deciding, wet the wood, wait a bit for the grain to raise then do the finger test. I use this technique in woodworking when using a hand plane, the last thing you want to do is run a hand plane agaist the grain!

I understand, and I understand that I was one of the people you made this video for me. What I don’t understand, is if I’m making say a really tall gnome. One-way is going to be far easier to cut then the other. How do I know which way to start with?
@CarvingisFun8 ай бұрын
It's not exactly what way to start with. it's just knowing the vestcways to manipulate the wood. Ideally, you want to only cut with and across. If you find yourself cutting against, just adjust.

@@CarvingisFun Fair enough. And thank you so much for your time and your videos. I don’t do any real carving, but I do follow along with your whittling adventures

Lol! I thought going against the wood grain was cutting through the grains making a right angle. 😂

The only but from the last video that confused me was. I see the grain direction however I didn't figure out how to identify the short or long grain areas
@CarvingisFun8 ай бұрын
Ive only heard short grain and long grain in reference to thin wood sheets and veneer, rarely blocks of wood. But in reference to everything I showed in this video and and the other, they are all long grain, nothing was short grain.
@trublgrl8 ай бұрын
Short grain areas are like, Japanese and Chinese restaurants, while Indian and Southern American places generally use long grain.
