A most excellent video. Ive had the "epoxy" discussion many times but im rarely brave enough to go public as you have done. Well done👍

Thanks Blair, I unfortunately screwed up one of the first files where I tried to explain it before roughing out the metal, but went with it anyway

Great news, for those that are not sure about what to do,the biggest thing was and you pointed it out if it going to be (sitting) was the key word then yes Epoxy is the way to go ! Like seeing what you have going on ! And yes it has to be sanded wrought before adding filler !

Kind of a lot, I’m a ticketed painter and body man, but I spent 6 years as a material damage estimator and had to take courses on everything from frame repair, to electric cars, to fraud prevention. Probably forgotten most of it now 😉

I’m getting ready to respray a tailgate on my gmc. It has a bunch of chips (I don’t know how the back side of a vehicle gets chips, but anyways…). I’ve always wondered with a chipped up panel like a hood or my tailgate, would it just be best to knock it down fully to metal? If I don’t sand to bare metal, wouldn’t I just be putting filler on the paint anyways? I also hear of polyester primer and like evercoat fury which advertises that it can be put directly on paint. What do you think is my best course of action here? Thanks!!

Depends how badly chipped it is might be able to feather them and prime, might have to strip. Could be it went down a gravel road with gate down? Towing a trailer can also chip up a gate

@@Johnnymidnight oh yeah a trailer never thought of that! It I guess I’ll see when I start sanding. Thanks

How come my finished paint never looks that good haha, but on the other hand my Hillbilly body work and paint roller is good enough for the dog and cat, they never complain about how it looks :) Thanks for the vids!

Why people use epoxy in the restoration world is because the chemicals in the hardner that causes rust so to take that step is just a substrate protection against the hardner,and you never put filler over paint now you can put icing or dolphin glaze,I went to PPG school in 1995 and we were told in the collision world to put epoxy on bare metal or an etch primer after are filler was done and if there was bare metal showing---,for restoration epoxy needs put on bare metal from flash rusting because within 24 hours you may not see the rust in the pigment on the metal but under a microscope you can see the crystal's on the metal and that's when the rust is forming but that's from teacher's from PPG and Autobody Trade School. I don't know about other Paint Brands I know one thing you can't do is use a poly primer on bare metal they explained that but I can't remember why so I can say I done it both ways but I do trust epoxy over resto's because of that 24 hour period---also I pulled filler off many jobs over the years and i seen rust behind it so it's either here or there it's up to you and how you prepare the work surface.

I absolutely agree with this, if it’s sitting in bare metal, for sure.

Agree with you Jon, even if you were putting filler over epoxy primer/sealer wouldnt you have to rough up the primer?
@Johnnymidnight7 ай бұрын
Depending on the product, epoxy is usually “open “ for around 8 hours, after that, yes, it would need a tooth for the filler to adhere
