Awesome presentation. I was having several problems that I think might be solved using your instructions. For example, I was merely soaking grains and I think this was resulting in slow colonization of bags. I think this slow colonization allowed contams to gain a foothold. There are several other great lessons I learned here. Thanks very much.

Strange....There are 8 billion people and 1 billion websites in the world and this is the ONLY place where I have found which shows a nice acrylic SAB. I know the author says it's cost prohibitive. However, people seem to have no problem paying $60K for their automobiles. If you're a master cultivator, a beautiful $2.5k - $3K SAB (like the author has designed) doesn't seem unreasonable. Of course, you'd have to design 3D printed connectors so you could ship and store the SAB in a "flat pack" format.

It wasn't thousands. I think it was like $650-700, something like that.

if the bag is sealed, how do you put the spawn grain in?
@StipeCapАй бұрын
Could you rephrase? I don't understand the question. The bags are unsealed and loaded with grain before pressure cooking. If you mean inoculation post-sterilization cycle: peel the vacuum-sealed opening while in front of your flow cabinet, then inoculate and seal with impulse sealer or with a zip tie.

Mounting it in the bed of the truck I think I'd try routing the exhaust straight below and have it output into the exhaust of the truck. The sound would get lost in there.
@StipeCapАй бұрын
It's a temporary solution to a temporary problem. I'll be acquiring a bed cap, sooner or later. I'll be able to bulkhead out of the cap. I'm also considering having a generator box installed on my trailer. Thanks for the suggestion though. That's generally how they run the gas/diesel cab heater exhausts often paired with that muffler.
@karmafarbus160Ай бұрын
I did the same thing with a muffler and a upright pipe with a flapper . The generator is mounted in a shed and the upright is attached to the wall to relieve any stress on the gen.
@dustintaylor9157Ай бұрын
That may well work over the long term, but I believe the unsupported nature of the pipe will eventually cause the adapter or fasteners to break. If you had a support on the truck bed it would relieve that stress on the exhaust flange adapter.On my generator I have a similar adapter but used silicone exhaust ducting to go out. Mine is permanently mounted in a job site box at my cabin so it’s not the same application as yours. Even a short length of flexible exhaust pipe could isolate the piping from the exhaust adapter and eliminate fatigue caused by vibration. Just a couple ideas.

Do you have to put the substrate in two layers like you did? Or can i just fit it all in at once and compress it?
@StipeCap2 ай бұрын
The point is to create 2 layers.

@StipeCap yeah, I see that, I'm just wondering would it make a difference if you just made it one layer? I mean it's all the same stuff so what's the difference between 1 layer, 2 layers, 3 layers ect.?

@imtypingwords only matter for a culture that blobs. All else can be run as a single unit if you so desire, but there are benefits to maintaining a top layer.

@melkerdandenell60034 күн бұрын
@@StipeCap doesn´t make sense to me that plastic wrap would be breathable. Parafilm I can understand since it´s designed for gas exchange but plastic film is made for airtight seals. I´m new to this though and I´m just wondering how important it really is to let the agar breathe? I wont be using it for long term storage, just until the plates fully colonize. Do you think I could get away with your method? Not sure if my cling wrap is the same as yours, we don´t have glad over here, but I mean it looks the same. If it works it sure will save a lot of time and money.

Don't smack mason jars with your hands. The glass isn't tempered and can fracture from the pressure cooking process. Unless you want a bunch of glass imbedded in your skin, use a towel.

How is that 1 qt of spawn if the quart jar is half empty?
@StipeCap3 ай бұрын
You have to allow room for shaking/breaking the grain. If you overfill it becomes very difficult to shake. This is how we refer to spawn volume. The actual volume isn't an entire q, we use the jar size as a reference.

Would you please test 2 more jars with 0.5 inch of water; one with tightened [2 peice ring] lid; one with a "finger tight" lid? I'm being told on Reddit that you have to vent the trapped air **in the jar** to achieve sterilization. I believe that the venting is to allow a vacuum to be formed after cool-down. Some mycologists find undesirable because it sucks in "dirty air" (we'll ignore the flow hood) when opened. I believe that a tightened lid will still sterilze, but result in no/little vacuum after cool-down. The lids and jars should be okay (unlike in your dry test) because the pressure inside the jars will increase because the water will turn to steam.
