Israel has been around since the early 1960s. I own books printed up until 1962 which still refer to the country as Palestine. Palestine fielded an army in WWI, "Israel" didn't. The Nakba, betrayal of Palestinians who welcomed Jewish refugees in 1948, doesn't rewrite actual history. Palestinians have been hostages for over 70 years.

I was taught the high ready fairly late in my career (For pistols, they started teaching something I branded as a “Charlie’s Angels” position). I was taught that the flash suppressor was held at eye-level. The problem is that an operator who’s 4’9” stacked up and moving behind a guy who’s 6’3”, that eye level varies. Anyway, never used the high ready position during any street work, just on a range. As I really haven’t trained much with a carbine since retiring, I have reverted back to how I was first trained - low ready. BTW - I agree with your Israeli assessment although I didn’t ever think about how their army stacked up, rating wise, to others. Yes, they need someone to have their backs and they’re resourceful enough to do what they have to do when their primary benefactor gets wishy-washy.

I’ve never practiced or agreed with high port, with the one exception being home defense, if I’m alone. For my particular living situation, it should not be a problem. If there is any reason not to practice this way for home defense, I cannot think of it. I certainly do not practice clearing rooms alone. No, I will let the canaries come to me. Thanks for your knowledge, Paul. It is much appreciated.

Thanks again Paul. I learned a long time ago that the high port came from the SEALS because of their maritime operations and not wanting a round to go into the bottom of the rubber/ inflatable boats they operate out of. Proper very regular training is a key to being successful.

Thanks for another great video! Our agency contracted with a training group that had officers doing a “Charlie’s Angels” next to their head…while they were doing movements. NOT GOOD. Especially for people who have limited training.

What is the purpose behind high port? I only ever trained in Army shoot houses where it is a no-go. Aside from looking cool, it does seem incredibly dangerous, and I can't seem to figure out what benefits it offers.

It can be safer in urban areas, as an ND round can skip off of pavement/gravel and hit someone If there are people on the floor below you, high port may be safer, and visa versa. You can move through a crowd without flagging anyone’s legs or children You can run a little faster Low ready is also a snag hazard. (Ask me how I know) High ready is less awkward and more comfortable for me. Your mileage may vary. I’m not a tacti-ma-cool oper8er. Those are just reasons that I've adopted it. Not everyone is going to agree on the same tactics. As long as you're safe and effective, that's all that matters. Shawn Ryan and Reid Henrichs have some good videos on this exact topic.

Man.. what another great video that gets directly to the meat and potatoes... Since watching another CSAT video about staying away from high port, I have been playing the 2 and 3 gun games and using low ready exclusively. It works well, I'm just as fast or faster on target to first shots and it's safe. Love the videos as I get a fundamentally solid takeaway every time! 👍

I was trained many years ago by the best instructors at Mott Lake. SOT was still fairly new and we were taught low port and quick point techniques. Iron sights and basic platforms. The .45s we were using were the most worn out they could find and we got very good with them. The long guns were what we would typically be issued. I know that the equipment has improved over the years but I still believe that staying with the basic principles is the way to go. Thanks Paul for keeping it simple and straightforward. That extra second an operator may gain by using high port or fancy sighting systems that may fail can also be a deadly mistake. Keep up the good work and God bless you and yours. Nous Defions

After watching your video you really changed my mind on high vs low port. I still instinctively want to reload with a high port but I’m sure that is just a habit I’ll need to break with practice. This may be a bit off topic, but I finished re-reading Black Hawk Down recently and recall you being quoted as being unimpressed with the effectiveness of 5.56. Do you still feel that way or what made you come around to 5.56 again? Getting hits? Shot placement? Bullet construction? Thanks

My problem with it has always been where the muzzle goes when someone falls- even completely accepting the fall it's still covering a huge arc of things you don't want to shoot . Pinning the muzzle closer to the pivot point of your feet makes most of that arc the deck.

My opinion - High port creates blind spots. You have to be able to see before you can shoot. High port is for SEAL groupies.

I have an old memory of hearing a theory as to why some of this started: Navy used high port so as not to shoot a hole in their small boats. Army pointed down so they wouldn't shoot upward into the helicopter engines. Dunno if true or just something somebody said.

Paul, you are exactly right for not training high ready as a rifle technique. Here are a few issues I have observed with LE training. Most can’t maintain a high ready position for one hour of training. The rifle gets heavy and they eventually drop it down. They are not stress inoculated anywhere near as much as a special forces unit they try to copy. In fact most don’t do ready up drills with rolling the safety to become proficient in it. Even if one department trains people to a decent level, they will be responding to a critical situation with others that are not. The low ready position and discrimination is the only way LE should train. The perceived gain in speed is far outweigh by safety of fellow officers and innocent people.

Hey Paul, that "Guntuber Antifa" video was badass. Shame that it seems to have disappeared. When the military recruiters came to my very liberal high school circa 2014, they were basically speaking like Nancy Pelosi or something, so the conservative-minded guys (including myself) lost their excitement and were turned off from joining the military. "Don't Ask Don't Tell" was ended a few years prior, and boy did they love telling us that every time they came around. A lot of conservatives younger than 30 believe that this country may not be around within a couple of generations (or even sooner), and these videos help give us some tips for training, in the case that a less-than-peaceful scenario plays out in the near future. Thanks.
