I think the main reason Shinji shows attraction to Kaworu but not other guys is the same reason why he mainly shows attractions to females he seems to be well acquainted with. To Shinji, other people are just a means to an end; he lacks love for himself, he HATES himself, and other people exist to comfort him since he can’t comfort himself. He loves anyone who comforts him. Like that scene when Misato tried to molest him in NGE, he rejected her ONLY because he could tell that she wasn’t trying to comfort him, she was trying to comfort herself. You know he would have gobbled up that opportunity otherwise, but he sees people as “things” that make him feel better about himself. And Misato wasn’t actually there to comfort him.

In Japan, draft 1 of episode 24 is known as the scene where Shinji tries to confess to Kaworu. Shinji tells Ritsuko that he has never been in love. He is excited when he meets Kaworu, and tries to confess his feelings to him. Almost certainly "カヲル君、僕は君のことが......" is followed by "好き". In other words, his first love is Kaworu. He despairs because Kaworu refuses to confess, but the translation only says "I…" so I don't think the meaning is conveyed. This is a draft but I feel he is bi.

i think he's bi, he felt that someone loved him for once but if he didn't like men he would've just been glad but not develop any feelings for Kaworu, he's even deeply heartbroken after his death and even says 'he loved me' to Misato.. a part from that, we can see the analogy of Kaworu being Adan and symbolizing manhood, father, manly figure, which makes sense since he's been neglected by his own father.. there's a moment where Shinji felt a subtle love gesture from his father when he said to him good job. It's kind of cliché but not having a father(nor mother figure) present marks deeply someone's soul.. that doesn't mean he is bi because of that, but it adds more to how he feels towards men as a whole. You can even tell he blushed when Kaji pranked on kissing him.. And lastly, he sees the gigant ghost of Kaworu and Rei morphing together, they both represent the mix between lilith and adam and it's to me a representation of men and women and two people who have shown appreciation, caring (Rei is literally his mother) and love and admiration (Kaworu), and Asuka is sadly a sexual desire.. they both gravitate together through hate, they fight and can't seem to get to a middle ground for more than just a minute. They are polar opposites and it's only after the complementation ends that she understands Shinji's feelings and caresses him to show him for once love, but what shinji feels is embarrasment because she now knows how he feels neglected by everyone and he's scarred of how she'll react in a negative way bareting him.. but gladly she does not

I think for psychological analysis, Shinji being gay would bring things deeper and it would make a lot of sense. There’s so many times in the series where Shinji does not express his “attraction” towards women like his peers do. I think because of the whole womb separation / deep attachment trauma he forces himself to sexualize Asuka. But like.. he never felt comfortable around women. So I would possibly assign him as pansexual, HOWEVER as I said earlier I think labelling under any sexuality is problematic as Shinji is pansexual not because he doesn't see through gender, it's because he's so deprived of attention and love that he would accept literally anyone who would show him unconditional (but unhealthy) affection which he cannot give to himself or reciprocate to others, which is why throughout the show hes confused with his feelings moving from person to person each time he's confused, overwhelmed or hurt (Rei to Asuka to Kaworu).

I always thought the relationship between shinji and kaworu was very forced and not true at all Shinji met kaworu when he was isolated and craving for some form of human connection The idea of shinji liking men felt so out of nowhere because up till this point shinji seemed to be straight, there was no clues or hints of him liking men and whenever it tackled the themes of shinjis sexual desires it was always directed at women Also Shinji manga makes it pretty clear he isnt bi, even threatening to punch him when he lost rei I think in the og series anyway, he was most probably straight but just confused. I don’t think it would be forced. A 14 year old questioning his sexuality isn’t unheard of. Also homosexuality in Japan is viewed differently, leading to shinjis confusion with the idea in that scene with kaji. The show was also made in the 90s, before gay marriage was legal in lots of countries. Hell, it’s still not legal in Japan I’m pretty sure. Again, in the video I explain that we can’t be sure of his sexuality, but the evidence we have probably means he was at least questioning his sexuality when meeting Kaworu.

I think Shinji is gay, at least in my headcanon. He seemed disgusted in himself when he did *that* to Asuka yet blushed when he was approached by Koworu and Akari. He feels neglected by his father and comforted by a masculine figure who provides him unconditional love. I think the emotional stress of being an eva pilot at a young age probably doesn't help him much too. He has the weight of the world on his shoulders. During the bathhouse scene with Kaworu he seemed apprehensive and confused at first but relaxed quickly afterward. I don't think he even understood homosexuality was even a thing given he said "but I'm a guy" as well. Either way, this show gives me headache enough as it is and I couldn't care less what a fictional characters sexuality is. I think the overall story of the show should be the main focus instead. Too convoluted to wrap my brain around. The religious symbolism is enough madness. I guess if he was bisexual, it could tie in with him being seen as a messiah-like figure who has love for everyone? That would make sense for me.

Shinji is attracted to Kaworu because Anno said he's the ideal version of himself and it was an intentional decision to make the episode feel gay. The biblical stuff in Evangelion are done just for the cool visuals and mysterious vibe because Japanese people know little of it. It's loosely connected on a superficial level, based on what people who aren't familiar with Christianity would think. Angels are literally space monsters that wish to destroy humanity in the show because humans stole their planet. Adam is the ancestor of the enemy species to humans.
