I got to see an early video of him and Carly doing a duet. MAGICAL.That was a lot of talent under one roof, and drugs ruined it all.Thats a shame.

This is Debbie again. This is one of the most beautiful songs that Tim sings with Brian and The Beach Boys. He has such a beautiful voice. It’s almost like he should just sing on his own. He sounds so good. I love his voice. He has a beautiful voice I must’ve said that 100 times Debbie.

If you're a fan of JT, you've probably heard and seen this song played countless times across the decades. I know we all love the versions where Arnold soloes at the end but for my money, this is his best version of STP. His voice is crystal clear and the emotion of the lyrics pour out so sweetly. I tear up at this effort every single time!

I’ve read some of the comments and I have to disagree. I think this is one of the most beautiful songs the beach boys ever done because of Timothy singing he has the most beautiful voice and he loved. 3:10

I read that when Brian and Tony Asher started to collaborate on this song, Tony (who wrote the lyrics) heard Brian suggest the line Carol, I Know which Asher heard as Caroline, No

Typical James to have you enter into an involved story that sometimes you have NO idea what's going on.... Any ideas on that??! Anyway, who is the bassist on this? Jimmy Johnson? And my god does this video illustrate the blessing of having a magnificent drummer, what fabulous feel and steadiness.... beautiful

Saw him in '79 at the Greek Theatre in LA when I was a young man. Crowd chatting, sipping wine. Solo, he began "Long Ago and Far Away" and within seconds the entire crowd was absolutely silent, transfixed by his voice and guitar. That's Taylor.

I saw him sing this at The Red Bluff Hotel backed by the either house band or, possibly, just by himself on his Stratocaster. I believe there’s a story to this song. Something like it was an overseas backing track to which he added vocals.

We were ring-around-the-rosy children They were circles around the sun Never give up, never slow down Never grow old, never, ever die young Synchronized with the rising moon Even with the evening star They were true love written in stone They were never alone, they were never that far apart And we who couldn't bear to believe they might make it We got to close our eyes Cut up our losses into doable doses And ration our tears and sighs Oh, you could see 'em on the street on a Saturday night Everyone used to run them down They're a little too sweet, they're a little too tight Not enough tough for this town Couldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole No, it didn't seem to rattle at all They were glued together, body and soul That much more with their backs up against the wall Oh, hold them up, hold them up Never do let them fall Prey to the dust and the rust and the ruin That names us and claims us and shames us all I guess it had to happen someday soon Wasn't nothing to hold them down They would rise from among us like a big balloon Take to the sky and forsake the ground Oh, yes, other hearts were broken Yeah, other dreams ran dry But our golden ones sail on, sail on To another land beneath another sky oh (Let other dreams run dry) Let our golden ones sail on, sail on To another land beneath another sky Beneath another sky Hold them up, hold them up Hold them up, hold them up Hold them up, hold them up Hold them up, hold them up Hold them up to me, hold them up to me Hold them up, hold them up (Hold them up) hold them up, hold them up, hold them up (Don't let them fall) Source: Musixmatch

I have seen many live versions of this song but I think this one is still, by far, the best. Just James and his guitar...and some backup singers on tape. Nothing else needed. Pure magic.

Wow is all I can say. One man captivating an entire audience with one voice, one guitar and one tape recorder. The recording is great, but this version has such an emotional, intimate and melancholy sound. A lot of emotion was poured into this performance and seeing the audience reaction was very moving. True talent right here. Love you James Taylor!

This must have been before he had Arnold McCuller on tour with him, whose real showpiece/feature in James's shows became his amazing handling of the descant on this song. I'm not sure when he came on board, but the Live album around 1992-93 had Arnold handling the work of the tape machine. I'm not sure what they'll do now that Arnold has mostly moved on from live performing, and has moved to a really important new career supporting troubled youth. I would actually love it if James were to record Arnold on a giant reel-to-reel like this, and perform it with a pre-recorded Arnold, just a reference both to the singer who owned this song for so many years, and to this hilarious gag from the pre-Arnold days.
