Nice video, as always. I like the way you are upfront with the positives and negatives - Some just concentrate on the negatives or just say it's not as good as Photoshop. For those of us on a budget it's helpful to know that IR processing is possible, on a free program, and well done for throwing in workarounds for missing tools.

Hi Rob, just found your channel and have a few questions. I have a canon 5d mark ll that I would like to convert to infrared. I’m confused with some of the terminology don’t understand it all. I’m just looking for the infrared only to change it to the black and white photos that infrared does so well. Because it’s a full frame I believe I will only be able to use a one lens, correct? The camera I use now is canon 5 d mark 4 . The lenses I have are the 70-200 ,16-35 and 24-105 all L series. Which lens would be best to use with the mark 2 camera? All new to me but I just love the infrared landscapes. Any suggestions? Thank you!
@robshea9 күн бұрын
Focusing via the optical viewfinder in DSLRs is calibrated for visible light. When you convert a camera, you can have the optical viewfinder focus recalibrated for infrared. However, this calibration only works for a single focal length with a single lens. With zoom lenses, it might not apply to all focal lengths. Focusing via the live view is not impacted by this limitation. Live view focusing works with both visible and infrared light. You can focus with all lenses and focal lengths using live view on the rear screen.

Very nice video explaining the capabilities at a high level as it relates to infrared photography. I think many people disregard the software that comes with their camera since it’s free. I'm new to IR and trying to answer this exact question. (used converted camera, what filter?) I'm also probably missing something, but is it not important to set the WB of the camera to effectively run this test? And if so, would I set a custom white balance, and if so, upon what color or lighting or screen section? Used DSLR, converted camera, no lens filters, estimated to be between 590 and 720 so far. Nikon d70. Cool vids, I'll be deep diving with you for awhile!
@robshea14 күн бұрын
Since you are shooting in raw, the WB set in the camera does not matter. Beyond the test, when shooting normally, setting a WB in camera can help you get a good preview in the viewfinder, but has no impact on your ability to set a good WB in your editor.

Will see when I can upload them on my channel. Surely a difficult thing with the insane high ISOs and lower shutter speeds required. But even in winter with overcast conditions it is surprising how much UV light there still is. I will see in how to get a proper blacklight studiolight setup done but I will take my time with that to get it right, get it safe and make 100% sure it's not UV-C 😅

I am seeing less sharpness around edges of my infrared pictures taken using lumix dmc-zs25 self converted camera with 590 nm ir filter. Is this normal?
@robsheaАй бұрын
This could be due to a couple of factors. 1) Corner sharpness tends to be worse in infrared compared to visible light. 2) Diffraction tends to be worse both in infrared and with cameras that have a smaller pixel pitch. You can see this here: www.diffraction.cam/?camera=Panasonic+Lumix+DMC-ZS25

With regard to the question about Nero not recognising RAW IR files. I have a Nikon D90 with a 590nm internal filter. Catalog recognises it as a RAW image whilst Develop module doesn’t. I contacted Skylum who advised the following I have received a reply from our engineering team. Please note that the issue lies within the shots made in IR format due to the temperature limitations for the RAW format. For now, our app has a limitation from 2000 kelvins to 50000 kelvins. In this specter, the RAW files will be recognized. I have also forwarded your request as a suggestion for future expand of the supported temperature. I’m certain I used neo before with my camera without issue. I don’t know about other photo editors but I know Affinity doesn’t have this limitation. Is there a way to change the temperature in camera to get around this? Bit disappointing
@robsheaАй бұрын
Most cameras have a limited color temperature range, which does not support infrared color temperatures. Here are the ways that you can correct temperature with different raw editors. - Some raw editors allow you to use a custom profile to lower the color temperature range. This includes raw editors such as Lightroom, Photoshop Camera Raw, DxO PhotoLab, Exposure X, and Luminar Neo. See www.robsheaphotography.com/infrared-profile-pack/#editors - Some raw editors allow for a wide range of color temperatures below 2,000K. Editors such as darktable, RawTherapee, and Affinity. - Some raw editors allow for a blue/yellow adjustment instead of color temperature, such as ON1. - You can also use a Tone Curve to correct white balance. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fajGpHl-YthpZ7s
@tomgardner9963Ай бұрын
@ Thanks Rob. The link you supplied is helpful, but I’m not sure how to take the next step. Do I load a profile into Adobe’s DNG profile editor then bring in the RAW file to output a .dng file? My understanding with Neo is that you import the profile via Develop Raw which I don’t have access to because of the temperature issue?
@robsheaАй бұрын
@@tomgardner9963 This is the major downside of this Luminar issue. If Luminar recognized the image as raw and then just set the Temperature at the bottom of the scale, as other editors do, you'd be able to load a profile to correct the temperature. Since it blocks this, the only other workaround in Luminar is manually defining a channel-by-channel tone curve for each image.

The D3000 is a solid and affordable way to capture infrared images. Ensure that you use the live view for focusing and not the optical viewfinder; the optical view finder is calibrated for focusing in visible light and and will produce soft focus in IR.
