This is not boring! it is not a video game or action-packed movie; it is real life and shows what it takes to do the difficult job of restoring an old home in terrible shape while teaching yourself all the building trades. They are and amazing couple doing an amazing job. Illia started this series barley speaking English, but I bet he knows more languages than most of us.
@terryross17545 ай бұрын
Drilling in steel goes faster, and the bit lasts much longer, when you continuously cool and lubricate the bit/hole with water-soluble oil. You can suspend a container above the drill with a slow feed via a tube, or just use an old-fashioned oiling can with a pump trigger. Best of luck.

Absolutely amazed by the integrity, patience, and determination of this couple, especially Illia! This restoration project has been a long and demanding journey, but it's been so encouraging and rewarding to see how Illia has learned, grown, and continually pushed himself forward. Rooting for you guys! 💞💪🌱

Super important to have eye protection when drilling like that. Those smaller drill bits can sometimes shatter when working with larger gauge steel.

You NEED to see Escape To Rural France to see how he is doing his floors with wood and steel. It could save you a lot of trouble.
@Hagar26705 ай бұрын
I was going to say the same. All this brackets and math and calculating. Set the Joists between the steels direct, place a noggin between each end. Lock in with a nail gun. Have a cup of tea and put the floor down the next day.
@deborahberkey42945 ай бұрын
Yes Dan has it down pat. His floors are solid and will last a lifetime and more. ✌🏻❤️🙏🏻🇺🇸

My suggestion too!!
@spondulix995 ай бұрын
I came here to register the very same suggestion, but see it has already been done. I would add only that, besides avoiding the enormous amount of work required to drill a gazillion holes in the steel beams, there is also the question as to how much such holes might compromise the strength and integrity of the beams. I hope Ilia adopts the Escape to Rural France method in time to avoid all of the unnecessary work he would otherwise face.
@TheToolnut4 ай бұрын
I wouldn't have used any steel, green oak beams would be more than sufficient. It's a much nicer material to work with as well. Dan's work is tidy enough but he should be backing up those gun nails with 4"/5" wire nails driven in by hand. At least one in every connection, gun nails are only for tacking components together. They should not be relied apon for a structural connection.
@Valmtg5 ай бұрын
Wow! This is a LOT of work but you're saving a LOT of money by doing as much as you can without having to call a specialist.
@Fearnstein5 ай бұрын
That seems a lot of work making all those brackets. In the uk we would just notch out the joists to fit the I beams and fit wooden noggins in between the joists to space them out.

You need to add the mix of 75% of lubricating oil, and 25% water to extend the sharpness of the drill bit when you are drilling iron, and/or steel that thick. happy drilling from, Wade from West Chicago, Illinois, U.S.of America. 🙏🏻✌🏻

you may have lots of drilling to do in the future. for that: slow drilling in metall is better than fast. also use a drop if oil. reason: fast drilling makes metall and driller hot. the driller will get blue and stump. oil is also to protect the drill a bit.

I’ve been meaning to tell you, the space over by the oven house where there use to be some sort of shed. I’ve always thought that that whole area could be used as a covered work space. Put a new roof on it and put electrical outlets and you’ll have a big wonderful, covered work space, out of the rain and weather but still have fresh air coming through. That’s what I would use it for. That way you can keep on working and stay dry when it rains. Just a suggestion.

brilliant in the garden as well as d.i,y, is there no ends to your fabulous talents, well done flower, though i did cringe when you were drilling the metals and not wearing eye protection. a chappie i used to know from our maintenance section was drilling on a industrial drill like the one you were using and no goggles. a peace of metal flew up and went into his eye, he was taken immediately to the hospital 10 mins away, but by the time they sorted it the metal had damaged his lense/retina and became infected and he lost 30% site in that eye, i know we all nag about safety first above all else, but a few seconds/minutes of time putting them on is far better then the risk of anything happening. take care, keep well and stay safe xx

It's a pity that the magnet on the drill isn't strong enough, it's normally the most ideal tool for drilling in those beams. What we learned is that we must not buy tools from this brand, the cut off saw was crap, and the drill too. Evolution is relatively cheap too but the tools I have seen used on other channels perform usually well.

Seems a bit of over engineering design. Why not use wood inside each end of the “I”beam and nail to maintain perpendicular construction? See “Escape to rural France” for how he does the floors of the chateaux with “noggings”
