Agreed ! This is not only the 1976 issue, in 1978 (I was there) the Red Arrows were still flying the Folland Gnats... So a mix with the 1980 event...

I found this a wonderful documentary about the evolution of aviation and all its struggles, tragedies and losses and all its triumphs and milestones. We really take it for Granted nowadays. However, that being said, some of the aspects of this documentary didnt age well. It isn't due to inaccuracies or a lack of knowledge its because of the 747 that was featured here. Registered as N739PA, Clipper Morning Light was the 15th Boeing 747 ever built. To anyone that's reading this, you may be confused as to why I'm discussing this particular plane that was used in this 1970's doco. If you dont know of the event that occurred 10 years after this movie/documentary i will fill you in. This plane eventually had its name changed to "Clipper Maid Of The Seas" and was destroyed at 7:03pm on Wednesday the 21st of December, 1988. A bomb placed in Morning Light's cargo hold detonated and blew it into thousands of pieces. The Clipper had been carrying 259 passengers and crew, none of which survived. The debris from the explosion fell on the streets of Rosebank cresent and Sherwood Cresent in the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing 11 residents and destroying two dosen homes. In total, 270 people lost their lives that night, and to this date, the Lockerbie bombing is the deadliest terrorist attack in UK history. So in hindsight, seeing the inside of the Clipper and watching it land in New York where it was also supposed to on that tragic night is haunting to see. It doesnt help that they discuss the cargo holds of aircraft as they are filming in the plane. This film also gave me insight as to why the terrorists may have chosen N739PA to be the victim aircraft because it would've most certainly gained attention and fame from this movie and it also was operated by an iconic airline. RIP to all victims of the Lockerbie bombing you'll never be forgotten 🙏 ❤

The interior filming of the 747 was not that of N739PA although I'm sure the interior configuration and decor looked exactly the same.

I remember Ocean Safari as being extremely hard work. 820 Squadron Fleet Air Arm, Mk5 Seaking helicopters with dipping sonar, embarked on HMS Illustrious. The sonar 195M always came back unserviceable after being dipped and had to be changed. There were two ways to get the sonar submersible unit out of the aircraft: jack the aircraft up and take it out through the hull or manually lift it out through the cabin. The first method was very time consuming and the second took a lot of muscle as they were so heavy. We favoured the muscle method but luckily we had a field gunner who could almost lift it out on his own. Well done Baz! With all this hard work and long watches we needed sustenance but were fed pretty poorly. At breakfast we could have 2 sausages or two rashers of bacon or one of each, for instance. This was very unusual for an RN ship. Years later, I heard that the chief caterer had been busted and booted out for embezzlement of the food budget!

The British method of recruiting fighter pilots makes all the sense in the world. They know what it's like to almost run out of an important human resource during war. In the U.S. you must have a 4 year science degree, or be accepted in the academy, and qualify your way to figter training. No way to maintain a critical resource that runs out very fast during war.

I stowed away on a submarine in the 80’s. I hid in the torpedo tube. Was great! Waited until the crew were asleep then helped myself to food etc.
How instructors were 44 years ago. bloody terrible, awful, intimidating, overbearing, hope they are not like that nowadays.

Why are the fishing vessels such a bother, are they worried about damaging them?
@asumazilla4 ай бұрын
Nets, I imagine. Damage to sub and destruction of the trawler. Also, I imagine it could be a surveillance vessel.
@drjojo462410 күн бұрын
Things have changed. When this was filmed they didn’t seem to care too much about fishing vessels. However there have been a number of “accidents” and now they aren’t allowed within something like 5 miles of a fishing vessel. A more recent documentary on Perisher had a student failing for not manoeuvring out of the way, and when they got too close, not surfacing.

As a USN career (35 years) mustang submariner, one of my jobs was to evaluate the tactical and strategic weapons proficiency of submarine crews. As such, I observed many CO's and can attest these men are the absolute best the Navy can produce. All are nuclear propulsion engineers as well as extraordinarily intelligent. I'm fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with them. Salute!!
