The British method of recruiting fighter pilots makes all the sense in the world. They know what it's like to almost run out of an important human resource during war. In the U.S. you must have a 4 year science degree, or be accepted in the academy, and qualify your way to figter training. No way to maintain a critical resource that runs out very fast during war.

4:12 David Lister! 😂 Mind you, this 1985 program predates Red Dwarf by 3 years. And he's nicknamed Tiny Lister, there was an American actor called Tiny Lister who was in films like The Fifth Element.

And we choose people to protect our interests on what colour they are and what's dangling between their legs. Not merit or ability. It's frightening.

I stowed away on a submarine in the 80’s. I hid in the torpedo tube. Was great! Waited until the crew were asleep then helped myself to food etc.

As a USN career (35 years) mustang submariner, one of my jobs was to evaluate the tactical and strategic weapons proficiency of submarine crews. As such, I observed many CO's and can attest these men are the absolute best the Navy can produce. All are nuclear propulsion engineers as well as extraordinarily intelligent. I'm fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with them. Salute!!

These were the years of Farnborough air show. Not like nowadays when most of the exhibits have left by Wednesday, leaving just the bare bones of the exhibits left for the public day on the Friday and not even worth the journey

Great documentary. I’m not from a military background. Could any more knowledgeable folks answer a question? If they fail the course why are they never allowed back on a submarine? Why can’t they just go back to their previous position? I don’t think they explained it in the programme. Unless I missed it.

We moved to Camberley in 1970. My dad took me to Farnborough either thar year or '72 for the first time and I'be been going ever since, maybe missed only twice in all thos years. Watching the Blackbird SR71 fly off into the sun back to the USA in '74, looking down the runway as we were leaving, is one of my best memories and I was only 9.

Well tanks are obsolete the drones and hand launched missiles have proved that! Aircraft carriers are obsolete, they just don't know it yet, Hyper missiles can now take care of them! So what's in store for the subs - it doesn't take much imagination to see capable under water deep sea 40 knots plus Sub. killers taking care of them, if they know where they are of course!

Thanks for posting this excellent series. Pardon my ignorance, but is the Martin Withers shown here [20'42 mins] the same one who flew on the 1982 ''Black Buck' mission to bomb Falklands Airport?

I don’t get the rule about the failure of the course meaning the end of the students time in the submarine service. Surely if someone has shown the required skills to get on the course in the first place, they have something that the service is looking for. If they aren’t successful then surely a period of development may mean they are suitable to come back and have another go? I accept that some people maybe totally unsuitable, but some may have the ability to come back and pass it. Does anyone know if this is still the rule nowadays or was it an old rule?

@@shaneobrien2257 it’s a good question! 😂 I’ve done some research and it would appear that it is still the same rule. They still get to wear the Dolphin badge but are normally prevented for serving in the Submarine service again. Not all bad news, they get presented with a bottle of whiskey to ease the pain 😂😂
