Plastic resonantes with a higher pitch; wood, more like dampening.

New at the recorder and I have a soprano wood. I didn’t notice significant difference in sound with the plastic tenor and wood. Is the plastic more forgiving as far as air, fingering etc? I’m learning on a soprano wood and like the sound but definitely considering a tenor

I would have reccommended the more expensive Kung to you. I find the top notes easy on my Kung tenor (and you would too after some practise) and the low notes are stronger because it has the "long diapezon" design which means that as well as a strong low end, you can also play top C# without covering the end hole. Lastly, it has the keys the "right way around". Never mind, I hope you enjoy your Mollenhauer.

I got a McNeela Phoenix and have found it great! Expensive yes, but it’s a new hobbie for my retirement. Started with Coover’s Easy Anglo 1 2 3, and got the first few tunes down fairly well. The tune you kicked off this video is my next! Please keep up the great work you’re doing.

It has a pleasing tone I have a Treibert Alto recorder which is more difficult to play at times and not satisfied with it but I just ordered a Haka treble and I'm sure I'll be delighted

I'll be thirty-six in July. The recorder, guitar, ukulele, a couple of little keyboards and an assortment of percussion instruments where the first instruments I played when I was little, back in the early-'90s. I've played the violin since '96 (oh, how I love that instrument!), and although I still have my cheap plastic soprano Baroque recorder (Yamaha's YRS-24B, a model they still make!), I've only played it once or twice since I switched to the violin. On a whim, I dug it out again yesterday afternoon to see if I could produce a half-decent sound: nope. I'm still trying, though, with a little help from a video by, yep, Sarah Jeffery. I'm not looking to really learn the instrument, just produce a workable sound and experiment with it a bit.

you can get e recorder for 2.75 and you paid what? i know its better but why when you can get at least 2 saxophones with that or 700 or 2000 (for pros 5000) exstra for an oboe and you get a recorder :,(

I don't notice much difference between wood vs and plastic on alto recorders. Plastic alto from Aulos sounds great to me. For tenor things change and I prefer wooden recorders.

I think the plastic one sounds a bit leaky. The ticking of the keys of the wooden ones does not actually please me, but how long would I really note them? Moreover, such nuances of the sound depends on recording, position of the listener, acoustics, I don't even know. Moreover, I like your relaxed way of presentation. No show, no overheated yelling or naive joking. You just tell and demonstrate and yes, it makes me want to buy a tenor... and a wooden alto! This video has been here about two years, but still: thank you!

Thank-you, I loved your take on Playford. My favourite dances are "Upon a Summers Day" "Nonesuch" "Newcastle" "Hole in the Wall" and "Mr. Beveridge's Maggot" In fact I love all the Playford dances and my husband and I attend many dances and costume balls. Wonderful.

Harmonicas work like the concertina and the bandoneon(concertina’s big brother) blow and draw give different notes from the same hole. Concertinas and Bandoneon are more expressive than the accordion.

Your phrases are really long. Jigs need to be singable (even if they are instrumental) and singers need to breathe. So, some kind of pause every 2-3 measures is recommended. Also, if you listen to well-written jigs, you can imagine the guitar chords that would be playing along with them. That is because you are playing chord tones on the strong beats. Looks like you are playing in Dm. The chords you'll be using are likely Dm, C major and G major or G minor, depending on whether you are playing D natural minor or D dorian. So, for Dm you are hitting D, F and A on the strong beats (1,2,3 and 4 if you are in 4/4), for G major you are hitting G, B and D on the strong beats, for G major you hitting G, Bb and D on the strong beats, and on C major you are hitting C, E and G on the strong beats. It can be hard to write this way unless you write the chords first, and then add the notes on top of them. Writing melody first can make it difficult to add structure later because you get attached to the melody and it sounds "right" to you even if you can't superimpose a structure on it. All musical rules can be broken, but you are better off knowing the rule, knowing that you are breaking it, and knowing why you are breaking it than you would be never having learned the rules at all. I would recommend trying these techniques with a new composition, not ripping your first effort apart and getting frustrated. Many of the best songwriters keep the majority of their work to themselves and only share the best of what they produce. Every composition is a chance to practice and to learn, so the effort is never wasted.

What a fantastic progress! I started at age 49 and after a year ..I am better, but ... Now I feel sorry that I didn't record my initial practice 🙂 I had a good laugh when you showed a bunch of your recorders saying "it is addictive". My wife couldn't understand my collection. Greetings from London!

I'm now 73 and have no prior experience of music whatsoever. I think it's both fun and at times frustrating, trying something completely different. My family think I'm totally nuts both because of my age and the fact I've chosen the recorder. (4 of them) However I've always said it's only being nuts that keeps me sane. Thanks for your videos and I wish I was as quick as you are at learning to play recorders. Keep up the good work.
