I wast here last year in mid september. It is a stunning park, you can't get bored of the Mount Rainier views. On one hike, I saw some mountain goats below the pass I was at, and by going down I managed to catch them up, there were a dozen of them and they were really chilled. I observed them for a good 20 min. I also saw a Cascade Red Fox, crossing the path, and I was as shocked as the rangers near me coz he just passed us by like he was a friendly dog or something. This subspecies of fox is extremely rare, about a hundred are left. Finally, Mount Rainier has also gorgeous old growth forest, and easily accessible. If you go outside july/august and the week end, it's amazing. Because otherwise, it's so close to the Seattle/Tocoma urban area, that it can be very crowded. I stayed at 3 locations around the park to visit a little bit of everything, and I prefered the Packwood area as a base. It takes longer to reach the park than Longmire, but you have more shops and it's more secluded, less expensive as well. The worst is the Buckley area, couldn't believe there were traffic jams here, and it's a city like so many in the US: parking lot after parking lot and fast food, supermarkets, ugly motels. The alpine scenery in the US is quite similar to Europe, except it's wilder to less accessible. As a reward, you have a lot more wildlife, and they're less fearful of humans.
