Some of those gripes would be more of an advantage in hunting situations. You don’t want a big easy to hit mag release when you’re bushwhacking. Also the textured bolt knob may really be a non issue with a gun you only plan on taking one or two shots with.

I have shot long range for over a decade now. I also thought my fundamentals were stellar, and most of that was fine. However, when it came to positional, I was more of a really decent novice or lower intermediate positional shooter. Then, going on 4 years ago, I met Andy Slade from Rifleman's Path. He not only helped me with positional but helped me sharpen those already familiar fundamentals. I recommend him highly if you want to be good/great with long-range shooting. I don't think you'll find a better "proven" instructor who lives it! Take care!

How long it take you to zero to hit first round
@cliffy10911 күн бұрын
Not sure I understand the question. Zeroing is pretty easy... shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 rounds and then shoot a group to confirm it. Once you have the zero, it is a matter of using data to get the right dope for any range. Then, dial a shoot.

Dare I say, Cooper was non-monoGUNamous. He was more intelligent than any of his critics I have met. The thing about the magazine to me is the ability to hold the gun at the balance point. The only way to do this with the AICS is to use the small 3 round variety.

Just a question... for short range hunting... wich on do you prefer? Steyr or Sig Cross?
@cliffy109Ай бұрын
Inside of 250, the Steyr is hand's down more handy. If limited to that range, I'd chose the Steyr. It is only when you start expecting longer range performance without destroying handiness that the Sig comes into play.

I have the cross in 308. It's a work horse rifle. It's not cheap.... but it's sturdy. It folds. It has alot of customization. My old complaint has been that there is no options for the trigger. If there was an aftermarket trigger or if it had an adjustable trigger. It would have made this the perfect hunting match grade rifle. It's not a deal breaker but to some it's a big deal having a lighter trigger.
@alanrawson-wg8ioАй бұрын
Well…. I guess it comes down to what you want to use it for. The over travel issue is the only one I have a problem with though a bit more leverage on the mag release would be better. The bolt knob doesn’t bother me. Welder/ machinist hands. As a hunting rifle for my area it’s great as is. A really long shot around here is maybe 100yds with a few exceptions.

Appreciate your input and discussions on Scout Rifles and their use, sensible n' good information. Both excellent cartridges and both have their place. Yes, 6.5 Creedmoor will shade the .308 beyond 800 yards. Might ask yourself: "Is that a requirement I really need a Scout Rifle to deliver?" Target or fun plinking out to lonnng distances, 800 and beyond, is asking a standard Scout Rifle to stretch beyond what it was designed to do. Nothing wrong with that, but if planning on 800 and beyond, I'd select a more specific tailored rifle for such precision performance. Which of course is fine, as then I'd have 2 rifles!!!! Further, aside from having a few cases of mil surplus 7.62x51mm, the use of .30 caliber cast bullets/handloads lends another avenue for plinking or woods foraging with my .308 Scout Rifle, extending it's utility into a small game gathering iron. Do not misunderstand here, I am a big fan of 6.5mm, using 4 Mannlicher-Schoenauer Model 1903 6.5x54mm carbines. As long as we're slinging lead, what's not to like!!

Now imagine trying to draw while being under stress or being attacked. That “little flip” as you call it could result in your gun becoming his gun. My god people stop buying garbage and get proper training.
@cliffy109Ай бұрын
You are absolutely correct that this is not a great method for having the fastest draw stroke. It is a HUGE compromise. A strong side OWB is far superior for that. However, you seem to have missed the point that there are people who prioritize absolute concealment over everything else and for those people, this is a really good choice. In non-permissive settings, the choice is often between a compromised firing stroke or not carrying at all. Given that choice, one should use what they can. Good training should back that up.

Hi Steve, thanks for the good objective video, as usual. I’m touching base to see if you’d still buy the same scope for your Sig Cross? I’m looking for a scope for a POF Revolution gas gun and am considering you vortex 3-18x. Its a very lightweight 308 and I really like that range of magnification for this special purpose rifle. Thanks!
@cliffy1092 ай бұрын
The Strike Eagle 3-18 is good. It isn't great. Sometimes, I found the image to just not be as crisp as I wanted, especially at the higher magnifiactions. It isn't horrible and for the money, still a very good choice. I now have the Leupold Mark 4 4.5-18X52 with the illumiated PR1 reticle. The difference is stunning.
@735Secure2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the insight. I’ve never been a fan of Vortex scopes, even their high-end models, due to their reputation for reliability issues-I don’t own a single one. My most recent purchase was a Trijicon Tenmile 4.5-30x56 with an illuminated Christmas tree reticle. The glass is excellent-probably not quite Zeiss or Swarovski level, but still very impressive. I love it. Like all Trijicons, it’s built like a tank, but it weighs 3 lbs! For this application, I’m looking for a lightweight DMR scope suitable for emergencies but likely will never see the light of an emergency and will primarily be used for class and for range use. I’d prefer a lightweight option. I’m seriously considering the Leupold MK4 with the PR2 (Christmas tree) reticle, but it’s unfortunately non-illuminated, and ideally, I’d like a scope that goes down to 3x. Another option I’m considering is the Trijicon Tenmile 3-18x44 with an illuminated Christmas tree reticle, which comes in under 2 lbs. Did you consider that model? Also, did the 18x top-end present any challenges during the 1K-yard training class you took? I’m based in VA and am thinking of taking the same class you recommended. Appreciate your help!
@735Secure2 ай бұрын
@ in the current configuration, the stock semiauto 308 rifle is 7Lbs, with the after market Luth-AR stock it is 8 Lbs, another 3+ lbs for the current Trijicon puts it at 11+ Lbs and with the suppressor, about 11.8 Lbs. and that doesn’t include a tripod. A bit too much. With a 2 Lb scope I can shave 1 Lb off of it, but I’m not sure it’s worth the compromise. Any thoughts?
@cliffy1092 ай бұрын
@@735Secure Based on MANY people's suggestion I have looked at the 3-18 Trijicon but look at the total elevation available. It is only 17.45 mils. Even with a 20 MOA base, that's barely enough for real long range shots. Then you're at the extremes of the adjustment range as well. As for 18X, I find it works just fine out to 1000 and really even 1200. I haven't shot enough beyond that to say how that works but at the Bangsteel range, it is adequate.
@cliffy1092 ай бұрын
@@735Secure As I mentioned, the Leupold Mark 4 4.5-18X52 is 28 ounces but right now, there are not really lightweight choices for a good crossover scope. One thing I can suggest is a really good Vicker's style sling which makes carrying the extra weight a lot more pleasant.
