Hi, Michael. that brought back some memories. I got the 18-36 in January and I love it. Just a note - Mine came with the Laguna Industrial light as a package deal, and I ended up selling it on eBay. It is very bright, but it's expensive, hot and heavy, as well as having a hotspot in the center of the beam instead of spreading the light evenly. With the light being very heavy, the tension on the articulated arm must be tightened quite a bit to keep it in place. That means that it sometimes takes 2 hands and some grunting to adjust it. I ended up using some LED lights that work well. Some high-end lights are available at woodturnerswonders.com, but I bought a much cheaper LED that I saw at a turning symposium. Some guys were buying the great little $10 gooseneck LED lamp from Ikea and fastening a strong magnet to the base, selling for $30. It's not as bright as the WTW lights, but I think having one on each end will be sufficient.

Hi, Thanks so much for the heads up!! I have been using a cheapy magnetic LED light for the time being but looking to eventually get a better set up on that. Thank you for letting me know...should save me quite a bit! Much appreciated!

Short term there are a few things that I would like to see changed, but they are really minor things. IMHO The forward/reverse knobs are a little confusing, and seemed backwards to me. The remote has to be mounted...would like to have a magnetic back so I could put it anywhere like the robust. You have to use either the headstock controls or the remote and the switch between them is kinda in a weird spot on the bottom back of the lathe. The pros are it has tons of power at 3hp....the build is solid!!!! It has more swing that I can ever imagine I'll need. The tailstock is beefy and has some mice little center holders...it has a ton of extras you can get for it that really make it future proof...and she is pretty quiet! Stay tuned for long term review...I may even do a review vid! Thanks for watching!

Hey Michael, great video, thanks for sharing! I'm very close to buy this lathe. What is your opinion after around 2 months of turning? Would you recommend it? A follow up video would be great :)
@MichaelZurcher
@MichaelZurcher 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching! I should do a follow up video for sure, possibly soon. I haven't gotten a chance to push it to it's limits. I need to get larger tools first to work on the larger pieces I pan on doing with it. That will be the real test. I almost went with the 18 x 24, but I wanted the option to go larger at some point in the future. So I opted for the 24 x 36. Overall I am very pleased with it. It is built very sturdy, assembly is very easy, and it has a lot of power even at low speeds. I really enjoy having the remote feature which is not available on the 18x24 model. With that being said there are a few things about the lathe that I find weird and had to get used to. 1: you can only use either the remote or the head stock controls at one time...it's an either or. 2: the switch for turning it from head stock control to remote is located on the back of the lathe...would be better on the head stock and/or the remote. 3: The speed controls are good but not really finite, but you can get in the general are of the speed you are looking for. 4: The icons for speed increase and decrease seem backwards to me in that if you move towards the + it decreases the speed and towards the - increases the speed...not a huge deal but kinda strange. 5: lastly the forward and reverse switch also feels backwards...when you have it in forwards it looks to me like it's in reverse. Those are my honest opinions so far. Hope it helps....I do love the lathe though :)

Understood, thanks for the feedback : ) I had your same thoughts about the 18-36 vs. 24-36: the latter would be better in order to have room for “larger ideas”, without caring about sliding the headstock to the bed extension, removing the banjo, etc…. Also, this Laguna 24-36 looks to be the one with best compromises between finishing, QC and price. I’ve understood that in the past there were come complaints about Laguna’s customer service, but all of these episodes are 2-3 years old so perhaps now something changed (and I believe that the cheaper price vs. the PM 3520b may worth the risk). One last comment: I was told that the conic headstock might impact the stability when big bowls are turned. However, IMHO, the conic headstock is something which is adopted also by Oneway, which is thousands of dollars more expensive, so I do not believe it is an issue.. Thanks again, Luca

I can say from first hand experience that Laguna customer service was great with me!! I had an issue were my remote stopped working. They got back to me right away, sent out a replacement part that they thought was the issue...it got to me in 2 days....I opened up the remote and it turned out that one of the wire connectors from the speed control dial had wiggled loose...guessing from vibration. I hot glued it in place and all is back up and running fine. I haven't heard of the stability issue, but I would say that with larger unbalanced pieces it might be a good Idea to secure the lathe to the floor or add weight to it...I think the entire lathe is like under 600lbs...so not light, but not that heavy either. Good luck with your decision making! I'd love to know what you decide on! I will say one other thing that sold me was the amount of available optional addons that you can get are great. Someday down the road I may look into the bed extension to turn off the end, and the wheel system!
