I wish I'd seen this before. My unit wouldn't rewind or fast forward at all hardly because of the tension arms and was told I needed the tool you showed when all along I could've used the other method shown! it was playing music sounding pretty good then wham, it stopped and blew two fuses. I'm so pissed at this unit and the old timers want to know why the younger crowd isn't in to these? You have to be a tech to own one.

@@5thcomm I do. And a local tech says 600 minimum plus a motor or two if that's the problem. But he doesn't specialize in these decks. I know that he didn't say that himself! Maybe I can follow your advice. I am a diy person

@@roofermarc1 Cool. First, replace the blown fuses then remove the capstan motor but leave it plugged in. With the tension arms down, power it on to see if the fuses blow. If they hold, raise the tension arms and make sure the capstan motor spins and the fuses don't blow. Let me know how these steps go.

Man. I did you you say Tension arms down. Turned on power and seen the capstan motor spin and fuses blow at the same time. I didn't get a chance to raise the arms. That's not supposed to happen like this huh. Motor is not powered on until the arms are lifter? What the hell do I have?

In the service manual they want you to use a tentelometer to set the tension correctly but you are getting similar results with your multimeter. I had a similar issue with my X2000R when it was new on one side, so I basically brought the tape to the centre as you did and adjusted the offending tension arms location to match the other simply by eyeballing its relative position to the known good one and the problem was fixed easily. Its not a photo cell but hall effect sensors that are "looking" at the rotating tapered quadrant and guesstimating the arms location. I also had a low output on one channel and looking at the board on one end saw one of the pair of output pots were not in the same location as each other so during play back I aligned the low one to match the other and the audio outputs began to match. This was how the unit left the factory so being adjustments are made by a person to err is only human. I actually did a little three part video on cleaning and recommissioning my deck many years ago. The main reason for this was the drive belt actually degraded and stuck onto the pulleys from age, so I stripped the unit down and went through it completely. My X2000R is a bit unique visually as it is a black and silver unit which did not exist as an option.

There are no words to describe what it feels to spend time with Matt and his wife Barbara. All of a sudden, you discover an endless list of common interests with someone living on the opposite side of the globe, stories to share and jokes to laugh at as if you knew them for your whole life. I happen to be the guy he talks about and the only regret is that the hours which me and my daughter spent with Matt and Barbara just flew by in a flash!..

Hi Big Matt, when were you stationed in Berlin Germany, were you at Tempelhof AFB? My father was the ammunitions officer in Berlin from 83-84, I graduated high school in 84 and just loved Berlin. Impressive "budget" open reel machine. I got the Teac X-3 in 1982 including dust cover for $330 and never realized that Teac built one for Realistic. Control buttons are shaped different but it looks identical to my X-3. Is this a three motor/three head unit like the X-3? Had my X-3 over forty years and she still sings swell with only minimal maintenance over the years. One thing, I found using an expander with the tape format really opens up the X-3's dynamics (cassette decks too). I got the Pioneer RG-2 in 1981. Nice to have 90 minutes of "uninterrupted" music at 3 3/4ips.
