It's kind of a shame that Ultron is so outwardly, irrationally villainous, because this is a REALLY good point, and it never gets addressed. How IS humanity to be protected as it enters this new age of godlike powers and technology, if the only concern the Avengers have is maintaining the status quo? More broadly speaking, what does that say about the ethos of the superhero? "Save the world," right? But whether it's a true existential threat, like Thanos, or just something that risks changing humanity's view of itself, like mutants, the people in this universe are 'saved' from it all by heroes who won't allow change, no matter what. And of course, their only rebuttal is to smash him with a hammer. But Ultron, the AI outside of humanity, can see the bigger pattern, and he tried to explain it. Unfortunately, he's got that stupid utilitarian worldview so common to AI in fiction, combined with a god complex and some light insanity inherited from the mind stone, and he winds up falling into the exact same trap that he criticizes the Avengers for- following a simple guideline to extinction. I wonder if he could've been better. If he hadn't been outright destroyed by the end of Sokovia, it seemed like he was starting to expand his thinking- there might have been a compromise possible. But Vision, the man who was born yesterday, had to kill him to protect the now. What could the later have looked like, if Ultron or humanity at large had been allowed to evolve?
