So I've been going through something similar recently... I jumped on the 4K train a few years back and many purchases and much expenditure later it hasn't been what I thought it would be. For me personally, and for the home cinema system that I have, there isn't enough of a difference most of the time between a £6.99 Blu-Ray and a £29.99 4K UHD. I'm quite sure many an AV enthusiast has kidded themselves into believing that its worth rebuying their collection over again, and each to their own. For me though, its been a hard lesson to learn. Great video buddy! 👏👏📽📽

Great vid AJ. I personally prefer to buy blind buys, purely for the reason I haven't seen them and it's sometimes exciting finding a hidden gem I'd never heard of, such as Anthropoid or Strange Darling. If I don't like any of the blind buys I'll sell them on. I agree with you on the point of buying films you've seen multiple times and wont likely watch for a number of years. What's the point in that. FOMO is real though and I totally agree the marketing has hooked most of us. Godzilla Minus One steelbook is a fine example of that. I'm fortunate enough to know when I don't need a steelbook though. The recent QT steelbook pre-orders is a great example of that. I already own other steelbooks so don't feel the need to double dip like many do.

I want those slips. It’s the only to make sure I get them. It has caused issues though. Inglorious Bastards as an example. $65.27. That’s what they charged me. The day it came out it dropped to $32.65. Half the price. Plus I already owned the Universal release. I just reordered and returned the more expensive one. I got a refund but I had to go and drop it off somewhere. You need to watch the prices like a hawk. Preorder guarantee can backfire from Amazon. Could have missed the good price. It was out of stock later that day.

AJ, bang on as ever. I still rent discs from Cinema Paradiso which supports my look on it. The biggest thing being 'if I do like this, then when will i watch it again' question, whether that being having seen it in the cinema or with a disc rental. Not having stacks of films in a 'to watch' pile also means that there's no real pressure, other that returning to get the next one. In most cases, the delivery timing of the discs also means that I watch them around more import things like family time. Best thing I've done is not pre-ordering things unless I really want them.

I very much agree with you. I am feeling increasingly pressured into buying some overpriced “special collector” Steelbook edition with a few bits of worthless PR tat (that I’m never going to look at and have no interest in) thrown in to help justify the price all because of a nurtured fear that it’s the only way to get my hands on a film which I only think I will want to own and, in actuality, may be disappointed such that I would then never rewatch it ever again. Historically, I used to be a regular cinema goer and would only pick up a physical copy of those movies I had enjoyed and knew I would enjoy a rewatch. However, it’s now such a costly exercise to get out to a cinema, I only get to see those films that I REALLY know I will enjoy. Then the majority of releases now seem to be posted for “limited edition” preorder and “sell out” before they even get to the cinema …. Without any apparent intent or expectation of a standard (more economic) slip cover release in the works. I can understand why some collectors want to dedicate their lives to steelbooks … they are a nicer thing to handle (though most of the ones I pick up from CEX are nearly always damaged) … but it is the movie I want … not a fancy case with unwanted tat tucked in. Even here.. I say “want” … I do like to think I try and stay selective in my choices … I do want the upgrade to the 4k Kill Bill movies, but it’s costly enough at £25 each for a slip cover release … that’s still £50 for the pair .. £70 for the 2 Steelbook versions is way too much. Indeed, for a pair of back-catalogue movies which get a 4k upscale to support streaming/broadcast anyway (and which seem to have been throttled to a 2k upscale with the benefits over a regular Blu Ray being limited to HDR treatment) … I would have thought £30 for the 2 movies as a boxed set would have been much more sellable and (overall) profitable to a wider market place ?? So .. normally I wouldn’t feel the need to preorder if I had confidence a title was going to be released in due course … I would be able to carry on as normal and collect titles I knew I actually wanted. However, I am now suffering anxiety that I will miss the opportunity to be able to acquire a title I only “might” want unless I preorder an extravagant package which I can’t really afford. My senses tell me we’re being manipulated to ensure all production of a given title in any form of physical media is guaranteed to be fully sold to ensure the media companies are not left with any dead stock which they are forced to warehouse pending some future potential sales they cannot be certain of. Such dead stock eats into their bottom line and, therefore, profits and investor dividends. Maybe the best solution is simply to embrace the situation and become a scalper!! … Buy all those Limited Editions as soon as they appear for preorder and (with no intention of ever watching them, flog them on at inflated prices … works for CEX where it’s still often (though not always) cheaper to buy a 4k disc new and sealed from HMV than it is to buy a scratched and fingered used copy from CEX (and have you tried to claim back on their supposedly bulletproof warranty as a result of a scratch?).

That's one I know I'll love rewatching many times in the years to come. As for, say "Reagan" , I thought it was a decent movie, but probably wouldn't watch it more than maybe once more. Sadly it't not just FEAR of missing out. It's actual missing out... exactly the same as you, I didn't notice *Nosferatu* steelbook go live and 24-36 hours later it was sold out. Sure, if I _only_ cared about the disc I wouldn't worry but, as a steelbook collector and caring about that *TOO* ... _not_ *to the exclusion of* but *TOO* if I don't pre-order they do often sell out. I actually *WAS* gutted when I couldn't get it... luckily I got a tip off about HMV back in stock from Big Pauly and *for me* that made me happy because it was a 'goal' item for me above many others. Maybe if you're paying for a cinema 'experience' I agree but 90% of my cinema trips are solo so, unless the movie needs the big screen, a home purchase is not only cheaper, it doesn't come with the risk on continous interruptions and if you don't like it (unlike a cinema visit) ypu can get a chunk of the cost, which starts off cheaper than the cinema after travel and time, back at CeX. It's fair about *pre-ordering* recent cinema releases I agree (unless you want specific packaging), because you can pick them up cheap soon enough (or on streaming if you have streaming) but so many people dismiss 'blind buying' totally when it's often impossible to find out if you like something _without_ a blind buy. I will give you that I am probably guilty of "If I watched it, how soon before I watch it again?" buying... but it's *cheaper* if I just buy it (and sell if I don't like it) than pre-watching and finding out. I've certainly noticed the various new techniques for making us buy, though I think some are down to distributors and others down to the shops (under-ordering, either to make sure they aren't left with stock and/or so they sell out and can re-order). I was in the situation, like you, of actually getting 'chemical depression' if I didn't get a delivery every day; I used to time my orders so I would 'only' get 1/day, so happy each day on minimum money... and if someone delivered early I 'needed' to order again to cover the now'empty' day... at least like you I've got past _that_ even if I'm still spending more than I should. As an aside, are you speaking generic prices, or do you really not get 20% off at HMV orders?

The only reason I will pre-order anything is when it's one of my favorite movies, and it only has a limited edition with the premium packaging. This past year, I have pre-ordered very few titles, maybe 5 or 6. But I will say that if I had unlimited income, I would probably pre-order everything because I have missed out on some of these titles because the studios are limiting them on purpose so they do sell out, that way people freak out and always pre-order so the don't miss out, FOMO! It is real.

It's become such a scam. These companies only make a limited amount, people pre-order, many times selling it out before the actual release date, and like 20% of those buyers put it on eBay for exorbitant gouged prices. Sometimes the company releases a more standard version of the movie and sometimes they don't. If you didn't get it within that tiny window and actually have a life and a job, then you're just gonna have to live without it, unless you wanna pay $100+ for a $30 item off ebay. An example of this for me would be a 4k release of The Neon Demon. I had NO IDEA the sh*t was even released on 4k but apparantly it was and the only way i can get it now is to pay a ludicrous price on eBay. Total horsesh*t., The entire issue with Nosferatu is the biggest horsesh*t I've ever heard. The stupid sh*t is still out in theaters for God's sake! And the physical copy is now UNABLE to be obtained?? Months before it's even released? We are being scammed.

It is a shrinking market, but Sony stopping the sale of recordable blu rays shouldn't have any effect on the physical bootleg market. I think the biggest player in that space is actually Verbatim, who will continue to make the discs, so I don't think that's significant at all. In regards to modern films being churned out like an assembly line for a quick buck, there's some truth to that but a lot of that is inevitable change as a result of digital filmmaking making things quicker and easier to film and release. However, some aspect of filmmaking and the home video industry has always been to churn product out for quick profit. Going back to the pre-VHS days, 50s and 60s and 70s when Drive In theaters in America were big, all these cheap horror/scifi/genre films were made targeted at teens, for very little $, with salacious advertising. Producers like Roger Corman were famous for reusing sets and filming more than 1 film at a time. This sort of thing continued in the 80s and 90s when you had the direct to video market, many films had no theatrical release but were being made and sold to video stores and video stores needed to fill their shelves so they took in tons of cheaply made product. I'm a horror fan so I like a lot of that stuff, but a lot of it is also crap, just like a lot of the low/no budget modern stuff is crap. But there's always been more cheaply produced crap. Then the video store market died so now the low budget indie genre stuff gets dumped to streaming, Prime, Tubi, Vimeo, other sites. People can make and distribute films quicker and cheaper, but there's always been lower tier, small budget quicky churned out 'product' in the industry. I'm younger than you but older than a lot of younger people, and a lot of it is what you grew up with. We have more affinity for the older stuff, but teenagers now, and people in their 20s, most of them have less interest in films from the 90s, 80s, 70s, and older. They grew up with late 90s/early/mid-2000s films. Just like people born in the 20s and 30s probably thought a lot of the post 1950s cinema was bunk/rubbish. A lot of our taste is formed based on our generation. It's not just that someone whose 20 now has mostly grown up with no physical media, they won't care about seeking out discs of older films because they'll just watch the stuff from around 2000 and on via digital means. And the more recent stuff is generally better represented and available on streaming than silent films and obscure films from the 50s 60s 70s and 80s, etc.

Steel books only get those if price is a few dollars difference. I’ve done a few blind buys, and say wasn’t happy with one. Usually buy movies I’m familiar with. Do go to thrift stores and run across a lot of Blu-ray’s cost around $4, dvds $1. Do check for scratches before buying. Movie upgrade, depends, for me there is a big difference from dvd to Blu-ray, some movies look better in 4k. Batman 89 in 4k looks very good. Wait for some time to pass, prices do drop. I’ve done a preorder for wicked for my daughter, and gladiator 2 sine I have the first one. Sometimes better to get blu-ray box set, like terminator 6 film and Craig 007 collection, both of those box sets under $20.(blu-ray). Every now and then need common sense.

😂 Nothing wrong in that. My cancellation just based upon knowing I won’t watch again for a decade. I’ll grab it then from the landfill 😂

Hi AJ, it may or not surprise you but I never pre-order movies (never have, never will) probably because I don’t do special editions or Steelbooks. If a film sells out then I will wait for it to wind up in CEX or later on eBay 🧐 plus I never get FOMO (its just not in my nature) I know that if there’s a movie I want, I will get it eventually (I’m very laid back and can wait as long as it takes…there are movies I’ve waited on for years 🧐 plus I rarely order films online…probably one in a hundred) I think your now on a better path AJ, your thought process is working for you as a collector 🤔 nice one mate, take care👍😃👍

Thanks Al. I’m going to do one more of this style vid. In 2 weeks probably. And it’s a big one - very personal about why I’ve collected as I have to nigh on 35 years. There’s been a lot of thinking and exploration that I’ve been doing. And conclusions drawn. ☝️

Cool, I look forward to hearing what you have to say, yeah we must have started collecting around the same time…which is more than half of our lives 😮 now that’s dedication for you 🤔

We almost never go to the theater as they are too far and expensive. I only preorder what I know I will really like and would rewatch. Most recent was The Substance. I only have Nosferatu and Gladiator 2 preordered. I'm not even sure what the next release would be I would even consider to preorder atm.

Did you like Nosferatu. I’m still yet to see it. Heard mixed opinions. Theatre is expensive. What keeps me away is more the time . The journey to it and back is nigh on an hour either way. So add that to the films length and the ads etc. a lose a lot of time in the day and hate that now

I am definitely going to be more careful in what I get on 4K or Blu-ray not going to spend stupid money on things I do get what you mean and I think you're right .

I have personally never had an issue with FOMO, nor do I blind buy, unless it's a cheap dvd but I get people do. Doubt Impact, China O'brien and Kickboxer are the only pre orders I have ever bought. Buying used blu rays and dvds like I do saves so much money. I couldn't imagine spending all that money on films, great video mate

🫡thank you. No vids now for a week I think 🤔 Got nothing more to say. Yet ☝️ Yeah I do respect people like your selves who aren’t caught up in this nonsense. I do. Have big talk vid planned for 2 weeks time that’s quite personal and looks at my habits for a different POV.

Least if you don’t like a Blu ray you can sell it on, cinema you can’t and the cinema is as expensive now as buying a Blu ray

This is true and the was my logic and justification for a long long time. But I used as justification for movies I would never have gone to see at the cinema as it is. 🤷🏻‍♂️ ( I cover that in a couple weeks in a big vid ) But I think with the cinema. It is more about the experience too.

Most collectors are in denial. Vantiva is the largest manufacturer of optical discs in the world (followed by Sony and i think in last place is Sonopress) and right now, they are selling the whole optical disc division, that includes vinyl too. It was an official announcement. The division will continue to operate in the foreseable future, but it's clear the disc business is not profitable enough for them to keep it.

Thank you for that insight. I hadn’t heard this so that’s great 👍👍 And yeah I agree. There is a lot of denial at play

Thanks Dave. As much as I like the older who’s. I decided to not go back before the Paul McGann movie. So I do have the current era. But not Ncuti. I do have Jodie whitakers run and the Tennant return specials. But for me Capaldi was really the end I do like him as the Doctor and his final episode. Kind of bringing it all full circle. I never wanted to step back to the older ones simply because I don’t know when I would ever get to revisit them

Good for you mate, I have done exactly the same thing. Spent a lot last year, especially the months leading up to Christmas. I had a couple of vinyl preorders arrive over the last couple of weeks and I now just have one outstanding preorder. Already paid for (£35) and doesn't come out until May. I will be ordering Uncle Buck on 4k in a couple of weeks as I don't have a physical copy. I will be cherry picking the rest of the year. I will probably get the standard 4k edition of Dirty Harry when that comes out but not the more expensive steelbook or Collectors Edition. Look after yourself. Gaz.

That latter part of the year is already top heavy isn’t it. January for me was an eye opener. It was a reality slap 👋 in a sense. Uncle buck is a great film. And I get picking it up if you don’t already have it. I would do the same. But as an upgrade. No. I need to stop a lot of that and just get that much I really feel I want to upgrade
