Thanks for posting this! My folks and myself were on the train to Crossville, and looked to see if I could see us in the crowd during the run by. This was such an amazing trip.

I was one of the firemen on that trip. 1218 had slipped a tire so 610 went down to Huntsville to stand in. I don’t recall losing the bell, I think that was on a local trip. I had mounted the bell in 1990 under the pilot because it was the quickest way to do it and was supposed to be temporary until we had time to mount it elsewhere. Well, temporary turned into permanent. What did have issue with on the Huntsville trip was the brakes on the trailing units. They were not mu’d to 610 so someone had to bail off the diesel brakes every time a brake application was made. Great memories! Thanks for sharing the video.

It would cool to see Frisco 1522 in operation again, there are no other 4-8-2 “Mountain” Steam Locomotives in operation here in the United States.

I really would like to see N&W 1218 make a return to operation in the future, however I understand that this action is highly unlikely to happen. This locomotive only operated in excursion service for 4 years, 1987-1991, and 1218 was the largest locomotive associated with the NS steam program ; 1218 is now at rest at the Roanoke Transportation Museum but I would enjoy seeing it make a return to excursion service operation again after receiving a rebuild/ overhaul.

What a fantastic sight it is to see two iconic examples of steam power double heading together on the same passenger train, Frisco 1522 and N&W 611 are true steam excursion star representatives. While it's unfortunate that Frisco 1522 was retired in 2002 it's good to see it has been stored at a museum and the 611 has been restored in 2015 and is now back in operational service again.

Do you have any video that it’s just all whistle? This video doesn’t have as much whistle as you’d expect to hear from a whistle. Just saying.

Nope sorry. I usually get comments complaining about that whistle.

Norfolk & Western 1218 was impressive to observe in operation for excursion service and it was unique as it is an articulated steam engine, it's a true shame that the 1218 had a very brief excursion service career (1987-1991).

What I don't get is why NS chose to terminate the program while 1218 was in peoces!!! They shouldn't have terminated it at all but waiting until 1218s overhaul was completed and giving her a chance to run one more year before termination would have been better

I love 630. She has been a part of my life since her return to steam in 2011. I’m not sure why but 630’s bell in this video kinda reminds me of Tweetsie Railroad 190’s bell.

Bitchenheimer! Great vid 👌, way to hog the prime spot right next to the engine. I got to ride the Autumn Leaf Special behind 611 in Octobers in 1989,1990 Chattanooga to Oneida. Very awesome. !

A fighter jet flying low overhead put chills up the spine of most people, especially us veterans....Having grown-up beside the N&W railroad, in the Southern West Virginia community of Sprigg, Mingo county... these steam locomotives really do it for me, even more so than low flying fighter jets. Everything about these mighty machines, from the power to the steam whistle, is striking... and almost magic. A sight, and experience, to behold! Many thanks for this video.

It's really ashamed that there could be a chance that N&W 1218 wouldn't steam again. I would love to see it and make some run buys even with it's famous whistle.

I’d really like to see 1218 return to active service to double head with the 611. They restored a Big Boy, which is the largest steam locomotive in the world, so it’s not entirely impossible to restore 1218. But if not operationally restored, at least cosmetically restore the damn thing! You’re letting it sit there to rust away!!

We chased the J up from Atlanta that morning, hung around for a while then drove back to the Atlanta area that night. Then drove back to Chattanooga the next morning to catch the triple header. Chased it to Ooltewah then chased the J and A back to Atlanta that afternoon. It was a great weekend!!!
