I have seen Vidal on other sites when in his old age and he did not do well; age, alcoholism, and diabetes had taken their toll. Happy then, to see this and how together he could still be...

Gore was way ahead of his time. I remember when he first spoke of Imperial America and how Americans simply had no clue as to what he was saying...just Vidal being Vidal...he was pretty much right on the money.

Mr. Vidal is sorely missed and died much too soon to witness the mess this country has become. He would not be pleased with the Dotard’s shenanigans at all!

both obama and hillary turned out to be war mongers. wish gore is still with us but in a way i'm kind of glad he's spared from all of these. march 2024 now. looks like it's going to be biden vs trump and national debt is in the trillions and we're still printing money for endless wars. i wouldn't want to imagine his blood boiled or him fallen into complete dispare that his grandfather's republic has turned into this.

it's curious that charlie rose smiled and said, "you never give up" as if all of these war and corruption from the oil and gas men has nothing to do with him - a fellow citizen of the US and a journalist who's suppose to expose these things.

The mention of Brooks Adams piqued my curiosity when Vidal mentioned a biography. For anyone interested I did find a reference to Brooks Adams: A Biography by Arthur F. Beringause (Alfred A. Knopf, 1955).

What could he say now? We really do have creeping communism in this country...and the people have been asleep far too long. Some have awakened, many have not. We get the government we deserve. "My people are destroyed by lack of knowledge"..The Bible

All I can think os is an interview I read with one of the creators of The Venture Bros.: "They want to mold the world into a specific shape that they really believe in, and if you don't believe in that, if you can't relate to that, it just seems crazy. What is the difference between wanting to develop insane weapons so America can dominate the planet and being the guy with the cat on his lap who wants to take over the world?"

Gore was (is) a great intellect, and like any accomplished sophisticate he's self righteous, he's condescending, he's all-knowing, he's petty, he's vainglorious, he's self-congratulatory and he's never not correct nor is not able to speak to every goddamn imaginable thing with authority. Get him drunk (wouldn't be hard) and he'd tell you about vast benefits of maintaining Caste.

No, the US is not 'hated by all' and realize Communists, like those who were in the USSR would be a REAL EMPIRE. Don't agree, move to a real communist nation like North Korea, or heck just move to China and speak your mind openly, be political active and say you Hate China and you hate the CCP and let's see how long you last. If the US were a real empire, Gore Vidal would be treated like the Soviets or CCP Chinese would treat him if he talked smack in their nation or sphere of influence. He'd be 'disappeared' and not appear on shows like Democracy Now, and if Stalin were in charge or Mao, he would be erased from history completely 1984 style. How this that as a combination of intelligence and humor and not being a sheep.

Those are testable ideas. Again if you disagree, travel to North Korea and there are numerous things you can do to get detained and probably end up with a grisly fate.

I own that book, but the reality is it is NOT the "United States" as a vague entity. Rather it is factions of people, often likeminded with foriegn interests and those interests are those who we could show are aligned with Canada and the UK, Anglophilic in nature, that run roughshod over whatever 'American Empire' Gore speaks of. That deep relationship is anti-American as America was born as a reaction against empire and nations like Mexico were born into real Empires. Santa Anna was not President of Mexico. He was its Emperor. The real story has to do with WHY the United States fills the void left by the British, and other colonial powers like France like France. To call this an empire is a misnomer, but did you know the 'Dutch' empire never ended, it transformed into something else.

Vidal is splitting hairs when he says, there are no homosexuals, just people who commit homosexual acts. That's like saying, a Senator is not a conservative Senator, he simply votes in a conservative manner. Brando is not a dramatic actor, he simply acted in dramatic roles. I think Vidal has brilliant insight and was a great writer, but his ambiguity over sexuality was just his way of not coming to terms with himself being gay. He was from a different generation and probably struggled with that aspect of his life from time to time. As society evolved, people eventually realized they have no say in the matter of their sexuality just like they have no say in the matter of the color of their eyes. It's a crap shoot.

They dedicated a small segment about this to a documentary about him funnily enough, but he said it himself he just didn't like labels, he didn't think there was any kind of a point to them. He often drew attention to his own homosexuality, he expressed it was who he was and fought for it consistently since the 80s. It was one of his main preoccupations. I mean, goodness the man even talked about his sex life lol. He definitely was very secure and confident in it. The label/term just bothered him.

He was the last of a breed....that stretched back to Aaron Burr....now that we are a second world country and heading to third world status, he will sooner or later be remembered as the last of his kind....not the best, mind you; I doubt he would say he was the equal of say, Edmund Wilson...but the best we could do in our twilight...
