A good evening, or whatever sun point you are faceing right now, everyone. I ride a 1984 Sportster xlx with 60,9 ci (997 ccm), i combed through numerus forums, but couldn't really find a 100% answer, about whatever i have an ironhead, or an shovelhead engine. If someone could finally bring light into my oil leaking universe, i would be very thankfull. Have a good one ya'll.

@@jfrost77hd That was quick, thank's for the answer, now i finally know. Would you also be so kind to give me a short explanation for it about what's the easiest to spot indicator for the differenz is?
@jfrost77hdАй бұрын
@Matze96DAK An Ironheads pushrod tubes will be up and down with a lifter block designated for each tube making 4 blocks. Where as a Shovelheads pushrod tubes kinda cross at the base and the front cylinder tubes share a block as do the rear cylinder tubes share a block making only 2 lifter blocks instead of 4 like the Ironhead.
@Matze96DAKАй бұрын

So more often then not, when the starter motor just spins and nothing engages...its the one way gear for the bendix? Or could it be the starter solenoid not pulling and and pushing the other side out?
@jfrost77hd2 ай бұрын
@loganboyer8816 The starter won't spin until the solenoid pulls pushing the bendix gear out. If you hear something spinning and nothing happening it's the bendix gear.
@loganboyer8816Ай бұрын
@@jfrost77hd I've replaced the bendix gear. On my 3rd aluminum starter case. Pivot fork. Solenoid. 2nd starter motor. 2 different batteries. Exact same result. Just spinning. No engagement.
@jfrost77hdАй бұрын
Is there a starter ring gear on the clutch basket itself or real bad chewed up teeth. The kickstart only clutch baskets have no ring gear at all. That bendix gear should free spin one direction and lock up the other direction.
@loganboyer8816Ай бұрын
@@jfrost77hd bendix gear locks up in the correct direction and spins in the correct direction. There are no bad teeth anywhere. Everything looks healthy. I'm genuinely puzzled. I've had 2 veteran harley techs over to look at it. Had the primary off 3 times. Nothing looks out of place or damaged. But the engine is not cranking over. Only the starter spinning. And the engine isn't tight. 128 psi of compression per cylinder. Healthy compression hiss when pushed in gear.
@jfrost77hdАй бұрын
@loganboyer8816 Does the starter housing have the brass washer pressed into the housing where the needle bearing goes for the starter shaft. Do you have the big brass thrust washer on the other end of the shaft before you put the cover on? I have a cut away cover that's helpful to hold the starter shaft in while you crank to see what's going on. If you're careful, with the cover off you can use a larger screwdriver to hold pressure of the starter shaft so it doesn't kick it out completely while you crank it over so you can kinda watch to see what's going on or binding. Just be careful messing around if you have the battery hooked up and cover off not to lose a finger. Don't fiddle around in there with your fingers, if you manually engage the solenoid and it does grab and crank over... I know someone who lost fingers that way.

@@nickpasch1019 What are you talking about?
@nickpasch10193 ай бұрын
@@jfrost77hd the rubber stopper for the trans oil fill originally had a steel dipstick inserted into it. If the stopper was fixed by the previous owner by pulling the dipstick out of the rubber stopper you are golden. If the dipstick is still in the stopper it is very bad. The dipstick will vibrate and rub against the primary drive gear. This will grind the dipstick in the middle into steel powder in the trans oil, Eventually the grinding will grind the dipstick in half and drop the bottom half into the trans gears. It happens in less than 1,000 miles from new. Checking the trans oil for steel powder is important, the powder will spoil the ball bearings.

Hey I know this is an older video but, do you know if the resistor has to be out and off the back of the gauge to test it? I have a 71 c10. I unplugged dash harness to prevent any interference with the key off and took the top nuts off that hold the circuit board down. The resistor nuts are still on and it’s reading 40 ohms. I’m afraid to tear the circuit board trying to get it over the posts/pegs. Thank you! or to anyone with any input or help!
