I have to admit that I do not necessarily agree with the idea, that the first "Einheitslokomotiven" should have been delivered in the prussian colours redbrown, dark green and black! During the last years of WW I, the colours of the prussian locomotives were simplified to redbrown and black. After the war, the young Deutsche Reichsbahn tried to get back to a peace-wise look by ordering that all new locomotives had to be delivered in red, green and black like in Prussia before the war and most of the new locomotives in the early 1920th had this look! But I allways thought, that the order to colour all new locomotives in bright red and black, was valid for the first Einheitslokomotiven as well and I do not know any early photographs showing clearly anything excepcional! Of cause, when the new numbers were atteched to present locomotives, most of them may be in red, green and black, if they did not even have more ancient colours! Therefore some older units may never wore the new colours, since they had been retired till the late 20th! Today it's easy to paint a vehicle new, but at this time it took much more afford! Therefore all pictures of lokomotives of BR 02 with the small smoke deflectors had to show their first painting. It's the same with the first ten locomotives of BR 01, but since the first series of them also had the small deflektors, it is less obvious there!

Just a remark on the reparations! It took me many, many years, too, nutil I learned the differences, but the given up locomotives were not part of the reparations in the first degree, but as a part to confirm the amistice! The German Empire should not have the ability to continue the war at all! The reparations were established just in the trety of Versailles about half a year later!
@dirktaubenreuther94372 күн бұрын
Some words on the BR 02! During the 1920th, the Lokomotivausschuß was dominated by former prussian engineers, therefore all types of locomotives, wich were produced on a tregular base were 2 zylinders! Just for comparission purposes a smal number of tree or four zylinder locomotives were produced, too, but it took to the 1930th until they were produced on a regular base. The BR 02 was stationed in the Bw (Bahnbetriebswerk, i.e. locomotive depot) Hof, where the staff was experienced with the handling of four cylinder compound engines, and they were there ten to fifteen years in daily use!

As far as I remember, Interfrigo, a European railtransportcompany specialised in climatised transport used railcars with a similar function for mechanics/operators guarding their trains. For keeping an eye on correct working , emergency repairs of the freeze aggregates and adept the aggregates to changing climate zones. I once stood next such railcar on the ferry from Hälsingborg-Helsingør or Rødby-Puttgarden.

it was actually the imperial colors that the reichsbahn adapted...black, red and white. freistaat bayern and prussia were the odd ones out until all german territories were united

You should make a video about the br 99s. They look super cool but the specs are confusing to me
@thecalif29142 күн бұрын
The 99s, together with the 98s, 17s, 18s, 38s etc, are a "pool class". In 1920, with the founding of the "Reichsbahn", the rolling stock incorporated from the former state railways had to be orderly designated and divided into classes. Obviously, it was not very feasible to give each class of the state railways their own Reichsbahn class number, this would have led to a vast and unnecessary number of locomotive classes. These designations were for locomotives of German part state railways locomotives with similar purposes but different designs. Since the class 17, 18, 38 were well-defined from the axle formula and purpose (hence roughly similar machine size and performance), the 99s where narrow gauge machines of all types. So the 99 class designation never defined a certain locomotive but only "not standard gauge". So you can find anything between a 2'E meter gauge 80ton gauge heavy duty mountain railway machine to a B 750mm gauge 20ton narrow gauge light service machine in the class, which is confusing in the first glance. Also, the class 98 was a standard gauge class for "the rest", containing everything from small and heavy shunters to proper branch railway haulers, goods or commuter or mixed service. Speaking 99s, also all the other pool classes (which are a similar collection of "the rest"), you'll always add the two numbers behind the main class to the designation like not "99", but "99.51" etc. instead.

As far as I know in Germany double headers of locomotives with only a single contaktpoint per pantograph, the leading locomotive raises only its first pantograph, the second one uses both pantographs, i.e. exactly the other way round

The tank crew members until 1945 had the same black colour as train crews of the Reichsbahn. Same reason! Grease and dirt were harder to be seen on black.

I've always held the German 4-6-2's with high regard. Especially when the class 01 was available as a mod in Derail Valley. The Class 05 was good as well. As for the Class 06, I thought its story was underwhelming sort of speak.
@steelbridgemodels3 күн бұрын
The story of the Class 06 is quite a complicated one. It would have required some major reworking, but it could have been a successful locomotive if it weren't for WW2.

Nice video. Enjoyed Watching it! Quick sidenote on the 02 being a failure: From wht I gather, Richard Paul Wagner, the Locomotive Superintendent of the Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft was not a fan of compound locomotives. According to the book "Das große Handbuch der Dampflokomotiven" by Klaus-J. Vetter, the BR 02 was only added to the programm upon insistance of the South-German members of the locomotive comitee. That's also the reason why no changes where implemented to the design, it was never intended to succeed.

If I may ask, at some point in 2025 could you consider comparing your German models to contemporary American, British, and Japanese counterparts? Oh and another question, what happened to those original, smaller tenders? Were they used as auxiliary tenders, or were recycled? That whole bit being from a part of the world where auxiliary tenders are still the norm(for example, Union Pacific's Steam Program has 2 or 3, the NKP 765 uses one, the N&W 611 has 1 or 2, Southern Pacific 4449 has one) it felt like the bit about the tenders just kinda fell off. Especially since most tenders were repurposed as rural water supplies, auxiliary oil/water, or are used as parts donors for other tenders.
@steelbridgemodels3 күн бұрын
Doing such a comparison sounds like a good idea, but I'm not sure If I can fit it into my schedule any time soon, so no promises just yet. About the short tenders, some of them were later reused for certain routes that still required locomotives to be turned on short turntables, including other standard classes that were originally built with larger ones. From the top of my head, I don't know how many were used this way, but the remainder were probably rebuilt for other uses like a snowplough, water wagon for steam cranes etc., which was very common even for tenders of withdrawn locomotives.
