I have a brand new katadyn be free never used and air goes through (dry) Have a brand new sawyer squeeze never used and air goes through (dry) And I have a life straw that has been used and is wet but that does not pass air. I think dry/wet makes a difference in this evaluation
@BackpackingGearNut
@BackpackingGearNut 14 күн бұрын
Wet the katadyn because it has hydrophobic membrane so it needs to be wet in order to expand to the proper micron. When I made the video I had forgotten to say that. If it then allows air through then it has a problem.

Thank you! Super informative. I’m super fussy about fabrics and cannot stand polyester against my face. Too hot and sweaty. The Nemo Fillo microfleece is the only fabric that has ever felt comfortable. How does the ZenBivy fabric compare to the Nemo microfleece?
@BackpackingGearNut
@BackpackingGearNut 9 күн бұрын
The Nemo microfleece is nice and soft, but the foam rubber or plastic, depending on which pillow you get, is very hot on my head. Which is nice when it’s really cold but not anything above 40°F, and it makes me sweat and is uncomfortable for me when it’s hot. I like the feel of the ZenBivy pillowcase. It’s soft in a different way, but it is breathable and doesn’t make my ear. Feel weird. Also, the way I put the pillow together. It’s either got the down pillow topper or if I’m going ultralight I may use one of my jackets so I’m able to mitigate the sweat.

I had a horrible experience with outdoor vitals. Their gear is great but if you need to return something they are the worst. They will inspect your return and if it’s not in new unused condition they will deduct 20% from your refund. Now this seems fair but my return has a pulled thread in the hood that there is no way I could have caused and they wouldn’t give me the benefit of the doubt and took 20% of the top. I tried reasoning with them to no avail. They give cottage industry proprietors a bad name. Beware. Not a hater just telling the truth.

Sorry to hear you had that experience. I used their gear for a long time before they even knew who I was and have had good experience returning things but the last time I return something was now over two years ago. Thank you for the comment. I hope you enjoy my videos!

I've no idea how you fit into this and consider it comfortable. Im 6'1 and 235 pounds and everything about this chair is too small and ultimately, it's painful to sit in. Poles digging into your back and arm pits, ends poking into your legs. otherwise its fantastic but this weight saving obsession has gone too far if the usability just isn't there. My tiny daughter is delighted however as she's just been gifted this chair as it's utterly useless to me. It's way too low and narrow. Superb build and materials but if your anything above an average size buy this product at your peril.

I have quite a few different chairs. I have found no perfect chair for me. Everything‘s a give-and-take if you’re talking about lightweight for backpacking. I find that all the lightweight backpacking chairs that are under 1.5 pounds or two load of the ground. I’m just used to it, but it’s not for everybody. I haven’t had any issues with the bars in my legs and I have figured out how to deal with the bars in my back so that it works for me. My very favorite thing about this chair is it doesn’t sink in the ground because of the ground cloth. I also like its materials and construction and feel like I can count on it.

hey, I've always been able to use an extremely light pump sack, because i just use a thin garbage bag. Pick a big size bag, I think 40 - 60L is fine, scoop it full of air, close it at the top. Using your hand you can hold the opening closed, and grip around the inflating nozzle. I do this for my nemo pad, works better than an inflation bag imo because it's so much more volume, once you have the technique down. Just don't squeeze too hard, the thin bag will pop if you're not gentle. Used the same bag for my pack liner for 40 days, dual use is weight saving, not that the bag weighs anything, replace it at any supermarket.

While it sorta sounds counterintuitive due to its open caged design, I find that the BeFree clogs/slows quite a bit quicker than the other cartridge style alternatives when it comes to silty water that we often find here in the southwest. Pre-filtering can help, but I still end up with cloudy/brown water in the bag. Not sure why this is, but I know others have noticed this as well.

Good idea but ahuving a whole jacket in too - isn't this going to stretch the buff to the size of a large hipbelt? Asking because my buffs are already kind of loose, hanging more like a necklace, to the point they don't really insulate my neck very well. Maybe they can be used for this instead.

Why do you need a filter when camping😂
@BackpackingGearNut
@BackpackingGearNut 2 ай бұрын
It depends on where you camp. If you’re car camping and you go to a place that has potable water or you bring all of your water. You don’t need one. If you have a smaller vehicle and don’t have the space to carry enough water and you go to a place that doesn’t provide potable water, a filter is a great way to make sure that you have access to water. I mostly use them when I am backpacking.

@BackpackingGearNut
@BackpackingGearNut 2 ай бұрын
The Sawyer doesn’t have a charcoal filter in it so this filter Would help you eliminate any bad taste. I usually filter out of streams when I can so that I can get the cleanest and best tasting water when I carry the Sawyer. But as you could see in the video, there are certain parts of California that don’t have a lot of water and sometimes you just have to thank God for the puddle that you just found And filter that. I’m also testing several other filters. It’s the nature of the channel for me to keep trying new products. Thank you for watching! I hope you enjoy the content!

@@BackpackingGearNut :) Depends how valuable you consider your water. I have videos where I run food dye thru it. With how crazy the world is getting I want to know my water is perfect. How often do they find a dead body in a water supply that was there for weeks. Using a sawyer or something else like that would not be good. Ever heard of this sleeping bag Western Mountaineering Bristlecone MF Go look that up. I also run this the best in the world. You just have to ask yourself is it worth the weight? If you want to run a 10lb pack then in my view your just taking to many chances with a sawyer after all it only takes that 1 time. How about this...... Naegleria fowleri is an ameba (type of one-celled organism) that thrives in warm freshwater lakes, rivers, and hot springs. It is often called the "brain-eating ameba" because it can infect the brain and destroy brain tissue. Brain infections caused by Naegleria fowleri are very rare but nearly always fatal. In TN where I hike this happens every year. Someone dies of this. I put importance on items not weight. Water is number 1 and I want to be as perfect as possible. Also depends on the season. In winter the same applies I want the best heat I can get. Now you take my pot set which weighs 3 lbs. People would go crazy. LOL But I can steam and cook anything. I rarely take freeze dried meals they are just not good for you. Now my 2 man tent is a dan durston at 2lbs. My total pack weight is 30lbs. Even with these so called heavy items. Some of my items are heavy and others are super light. Now a trick I use is moving items around the body. For example My water sits on my hip where you feel no weight at all. I wear 2 drop downs. The one on my right hip carries my firearm. The one on my left hip I carry my knife and silky saw. So now when I remove my pack these items stay with me all the time. Search my channel for Silky Professional Gomboy Case and you will see what I mean. Has taken me years to get this dialed in so I can carry what I want and it does not feel like it. If you buy that first need you will not use anything else I promise.

My filters tend to last me about a year, but I am careful how dirty the water is that I put in them. I also would suggest pre-filtering before it goes into the filter and that’ll help. I have most of all of the major brands of filters, and they all clog. Some of them are nice because they’re easy to backflush, but with all of them I have found that I need to take a little extra care about the water I put in. Thank you so much for your comments!
