I've tried to read Tolkien's different books but for some reason every time I hit the wall, so I just keep on watching videoessays and read analyses. Your work especially makes it easy for me to engage with his stuff which I always adored but it's so hard for me to just read the thing 😔 I might not become tolkienhead but at least there are tolkienheads out there making me feel like one and it feels amazing

im absolutely taken by the inflections you put on and the personalities that come out so clearly as you read. do you think you would ever consider doing something like a weekly stream where you read through a chapter or two all the way through? i admit, i am trying to listen to audio books of all of tolkien's works but your affection for the writing and characters comes through so much more than any others, that all i can think of while i listen to others is how much i would rather have you being reading it :"] if its not a consideration, dont worry, i know how much effort it takes to read aloud for extended periods of time, but if its something you had ever considered before, you have at least one person very interested in it

IU for one enjoyed this video and I'm sorry you have to deal with nonsense both on social media and the comment section. Speaking as someone who enjoys Lord of the Rings even as a kid I always saw their relationship as more than friendship. I know that's weird to say but the dialogue and moments just make it feel romantic a lot of the time and very tender. To say there can't be a queer text to the work is limited in scope and less interesting if not included. I can see the relationship as both a friendship and loving one. It should not be treated with disgust. Tolkien was all about having fun with his text even back with his pen pals as any creator will tell you is the most fun they've had. Fiction should be fun first and foremost and looking at Lord of the Rings from a queer lens adds to it.

The film made a good decision, because to fully grasp the words written by Tolkien you really need to understand the world at its core - and films cannot go that deep in the time given to them. Theoden's transformation when he charges, how the entire scene is described - that's not a knight. That's some might of the Valar intervention right there. The reason why he can do all those things is because he is awesome, but also there is lineage there, there is blood, there is the connection to old days, gods, light which is good and Secret Flame. He, in a moment, transformed into godlike fury, righteous might of the free people, charging without fear, his knights singing as they felt the joy of battle, as Rohirrim do. In a sense, that scene (as many others) started with the Song of the Valar themselves. To fully understand it, you need not GO to the beginning, you need to trace back through all that has happened until the beginning! Eowen described as a warrior seeking death, and her defiance, she could not be killed - the contrast between her otherwordly look, but very "grounded" gray eyes which are endless as strong as the sea... And in the end, Eomer, who's entire world just shattered the moment he looked at his "dead" sister. Up to that point, songs of joy of battle, even the tears after the king and the terrible situation in which they found themselves... it all vanishes. His soul dies at that moment, he IS dead. And if you know about the nature of Tolkien's world, the difference between men and elves, you understand how significant that is. His sorrow was so great that he basically died at that moment. Death was the only thing on his mind. Death and the Ruin of Erda itself. He is no longer vengeance, he is not retribution... he IS death! He charges the enemy alone, and the entire scene, his presence, power and grief are so great the entire host of Rohirrim stops singing the songs of war, ingrained in their being, but all shout as one, "DEATH!" and charge with him. He did describe a battle in which humans take part. But the way he describes it, as it is the great stand against the Evil, you can see that these are not just any men, left on their own. There is a bigger power at play here, woven through them. Thousands of years, endless generations of people fighting against evil, against odds. Theoden, Eowen and Emoer, at certain points in the story, are move avatars of the gods themselves (in Tolkien's work, magic works in mysterious ways), and it by no means lessens their feats - quite the contrary. Their strength is not the one granted, but the one earned. And it is the strength that flows from the start of time, the dawn of Erda and the waking of men, the primordial struggle of light VS dark. To fully grasp Theoden, you must know about Ecthelion, of Glorfindel, of Hurin... He rode, and the power of the free world rode behind him at that moment. So no, you cannot do it justice in a film. I think the film did the best it possibly could to bring us a contained story like it did. But the parts we talk about here (and many others, or most actually, in the books) do not stand on their own. They stand on thousands of years of history, the very fabric of the world Tolkien created. Which is why it is Epic, in the true sense of the word. And why no writer since then manage to reach his level. Tolkien did not write the fantasy tale to sell - he created a mythology. Nothing less. Also, for you, great content. Two times in a video, I was battling tears. Because I felt it all over again. The whole weight of the charge of Theoden, Eowen's stand, and Eomers plunge to Death and Ruin.
