I enjoy showing off the inside of my builds. I’m not good at saying it so I do slide shows. It gives people a chance to stop the vid and study it and many people are “show me” type learners. I appreciate guys like you that have this wonderful ability of both explaining and showing.. anyways your channel will always continue to grow especially now that you’ve got professional saws like the famous 461. Thanks for the great content.

@Houseworksaws Thanks for the nice words, Matt!! I like differences; I can learn either way, but pick up different things my looking than I pick up my listening; I like your videos for JUST that reason; some things I need to hear and some things I need to see. I agree that the 461 will make some good videos as the first "pro" saw; I've got a Stihl 440Mag and 660 (clone that I've had for ~12-15 years... way before they were abundant), but I've never shown them on the channel. I think a mix of "common" saws that every beginner has and some Pro saws will make a good mix. Matt, thanks again for the encouraging words and for stopping in!!

Merry Christmas 🎄🎁! Hope you and yours had a good time! That there 461 is an easy-peasy gainer provided shes all tight from the get go. I’ve built quite a few of em and they will easily outrun a stock (and some ported) 500is with a few well placed mods. I just used some riffler files and “blueprinted” the cylinder - just make her flow a fuzz more and polish the exhaust to a mirror finish and she’ll come alive like nobody’s business. Dukes saw salvage down in PA has a .006 performance gasket for about $2 that’ll give ya a lil better MSV without breaking the bank. I saw a guy across the pond , Luttys chainsaws iirc, and he’s got some neat idears on the pipes - on the Ironhorse style piper instead of a 90 square end he uses a “sonic cone” welded to the front - food for thought here !

@fabzacres-blackcat Thanks!! We had JUST what I wanted... no costly gift exchange, but a very loud dinner table filled with kids, laughter, and conversation... perfection!! I hope the smashed-up 461 is tight; I vac/pressure tested, visually checked from cracked cases/paint and possible leaks from engine to oil tank; I think I dodged the bullet. I bought a pig in a poke, so I still am not sure; still awaiting parts; hope I don't have to buy case halves. I think we may start with external mods that anyone with basic tools can accomplish before moving on to the innards; I saw one or two of Luty's muffler mods; interesting concept; not sure if his gains are realistic, but I'm not one to squabble about his numbers. Merry Christmas 🛐

@ well, in regards to Luttys hi-performance tube bypass pipes I cannot say for certain as I’ve never built one. I CAN say that the Ironhorse style DID seem to benefit from the sonic cone vs the straight wall end. Might be an interesting concept to try out ? Maybe i.d. thread the end of the pipe (or tap it if ya gots one big enuff) and have screw-in caps or just use set screws with a very slight interference fit … might be the “rainbows end” 🤷… nice project to try on a wintry cold day when ya can’t do nothin outside , especially with your favorite cold beverage of choice 😉

@fabzacres-blackcat I did put an angled stopper on the end of the last tube; it worked well, too. Can't say if it worked better or worse than a straight cap as I only built one; my feeling for the volumes of each pipe is beginning to look promising. We sure might try some different pipes on once of these upcoming builds... it gives me an ice-cream headache to think too much though... been trying to avoid ciphering as much as possible 😉🙄

Since you're a data guy, I can see you doing a dynamic ignition timing effects video using your dyno and a timing light. A bonus would be the effects of limited coil vs. unlimited. I know it's in the weeds a bit, and it's probably a lighting and filming nightmare. I would check the view count on Dyno Joe's related video. Maybe there is limited interest in the topic.

Build the 455 into a hot firewood saw and the 5020 into a race/play saw. I think they're pretty similar under the plastics, you could also show the differences between the two. Those saws are pretty easy and cheap to get so they should get some views. The key to getting views on modding chainsaws is to mod saws people can easily get. The 461 is up to you, if you want another saw for cutting firewood, gear it up for that, if you dont, build a race type saw.
@HayChaffandSawdust1

@nseric1233 Thanks!! I think it's dandy advice on the common-saws; I've also considered that for two reasons.... the bigger logging saws are fairly well covered on YT, and I don't particularly need/want logging saws; I'm a farmer/firewood guy. The Husq is well on its way to beign a sportier firewood saw; I haven't struck a lick at the 5020 yet, and waiting on parts for the 461. You gave me some direction that I can follow!! Thanks again for stopping-in and joining-in!

Definitely curious about the bearing pocket deal you got me intrigued for sure... You know on the 461 it would be good to just see the difference say someone just starting from stock to base gasket removal and slight port work on the dyno or maybe no port work and just muffler mod. Maybe it would help some people that are afraid to start working on saws what you could gain with simple tools
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 6 күн бұрын
@happy8637 Perfect advice!! I did the 026 that way and have began doing the 455 that way (14 videos behind right now on the 455 and other stuff). I really like doing the small stuff first and doing dyno testing with each step; I wanted to start the 461 by doing stuff without taking the engine apart (muffler, ignition timing, air filter, etc). It will be tricky to do JUST enough porting (when the time comes) that I can still do machine work; I wanted to save machine work for past due to lathes are probably the last thing that saw porters purchase. Good advice; thanks for jumping in and sharing!!

Hey seasoned greetings, I’d like to see things that every day folk can do for themselves. The 461 needs to run before you port it. You can’t tune a saw that don’t run! Whatever you get up to I’m happy to watch.
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 6 күн бұрын
@jaysparrowhawk9388 Thank you for the vote of confidence; I built the 026 step-by-step and dyno tested most things along the way; I could do the same with the 461... stock then muff mod, then timing adv, then base gasket delete, etc... and dyno each gain so that, someone who isn't yet comfortable porting, can learn and try the beginning steps? I never know and wonder if I take too long to do a build and lose interest by taking the small steps; it's nice to know that people like to see the "beginning" stuff as well as hair-brained schemes. Thanks for the advice!!
@jaysparrowhawk9388
@jaysparrowhawk9388 6 күн бұрын
@ I like that idea, I have watched all of your videos on the 026 and it would be good to see the same with the 461. Anyone who thinks you can get the most out of a tune in one go is either a tuning god or arrogant beyond belief. I’m sure the likes of Donny Walker and the Ironhorse have only got to where they are by development over many years and possibly many failures. It’s all about adding up the small gains, some folk may not have the means to do everything that’s possible, your 026 series showed many tricks that your every day guy can do to make improvements. By doing it a step at a time a tune can evolve, it was really interesting to see each step on the dyno and the gains achieved. Keep up the good work

@jaysparrowhawk9388 Thanks Jay; I was afraid that the step-by-step video of the 461 might seem like a "rerun" of the 026. I'm all for it; we may try different stuff in a different order, but stacking (learning) small gains is a passion to me. Thanks again!!

I really believe in pinching the bridge between the lower transfers when it's there. Thinning it as much and as equally as possible. I bevel lower transfers to feed as much as I can while still keeping within the crankcase. 461s are a great saw after porting... I like bigger exhausts 105-108* with 20 to 25* of blowdown, 75 to 78* intake... makes for a good work saw. 102-103* makes for a good saw with slightly better chain speed with decent torque. Merry Christmas

.040" to .050" from the base will wake it up... if you're not froggy on the squish band cut, top of the piston can be skimmed. Many ways to skin the cat, some ways just offer different pros and cons when compared to the other ways.
@RichFife
@RichFife 6 күн бұрын
@HayChaffandSawdust1 nothing secret about what I do to these... I do widen the exhaust a little... but I mainly focus on the arch/shape of the roof and corners. By removing the said amount from the base, at BDC, the piston will be above the exhaust floor approximately .060" to .075" (ish). Always trade-offs... I used to chamfer the pistons to help direct the flow out faster, but now I keep it a flat top... I'm just an upright-monkey hacking away on stuff... sometimes I even get lucky. Lol
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 6 күн бұрын
@RichFife I like both options; I like shaping a chamber; but I also like losing weight from the slug. I think, from reading suggestions from people with many different levels of experience, we may dyno stuff along the way and try to do it in a manner to do things in order of the equipment that people have. Muff mod, base gasket delete, air filter, ignition timing first (dyno checking for gains on each one), and then move to grinding and THEN to machining. It's going to be tricky on grinding/changing timing before doing machine work, but I think we can make a series that people will find a portion that they can do. I would sure appreciate your guidance/suggestions along the way!! I'm just a slipshod operation learning as I go; while mistakes are a good teacher, they're also expensive; I would rather learn from others' mistakes when I can.

My reading comprehension may be off or that may be exactly what you mean; I've never intentionally free-ported anything... skeert!! Thanks!! @BuckYaSaws I've got some ideas for the the 5020!! I haven't even taken the top cover off to see if my ideas will even work... but they're nasty thoughts that I'm having. I would like to make a sawfest build that will keep me out last-place... wouldn't even hope for the top 20; just won't want laughed at too much. I think the 455 is going to respond well; broke 33% gain on it y'day without doing ANY port work yet (I did cut the base though). I have some of the same tactics planned for the 5020. I have vids coming about doing the base/bearing pockets; I know I "shouldn't* show them if I want to do better at Sawfest.... but nobody ever cheats off of the dumb kid anyway!!! 😉😂 Merry Christmas! 🛐

@alessioG7176 I really like where your mind is! I don't remember you here before and I really like that you are thinking outside the box; so bear with me a moment. Did you mean offset toward the Exhaust side? I'm not sure if I can move the cyl 3mm yet; I did ~1.5mm (0.060") on the Stihl 026 with fantastic results... but I moved toward the exhaust side to increase torque and decrease intake-side wear and friction losses on the piston. In case you didn't see them, there are two videos that I really think you would like. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpu8Z614YtN3qMk and kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYe3ppV7bJudqsk If there are different considerations to be had by moving the cylinder the opposite direction, I would love to hear those too! Thanks for thinking outside the box; sure glad you stopped in and took a moment to join in!!

Personally, I've got the tools (lathes, mill, etc) & a few extra clamshell saws, to have some fun.....but am still learning what all to do, and trying to figure out how much, is TOO much. Merry Christmas to you and thanks for all that you share.

The 455 work it over like that little stihl you've been doing. The poulan go hog wild on it . Crazy porting lots of compression and at least alcohol for fuel . 461 make it a hot firewood saw. Ive got one myself that im getting ready to do for firewood
@HayChaffandSawdust1

@jeffdillard8789 I like your thinking; being a strato, I think the 455 can teach me some stuff. Thinking ending with nitromethane on the poulan; I have absolutely NO experience with funny fuels... so I like that. The 461 is up in the air; lots want a mild-to-hot firewood saw, and some want to see the mild mods along the way... the stuff that the average person with a mild-understanding of saws can accomplish. I think we can get to hot, but maybe stop and smell the roses along the way?

@itllkeal Perfect!! I tore my 026 down so dang many times that I wore out the bolt-holes in the cylinder and cases; I can sure do it on this 461. I was thinking stock/base, muffler mod and ign timing (and anything else a person can do without taking the engine apart) and dyno-testing each step. Then can do base gasket delete, porting, and machining as we go? Thanks for the advice; it was where I actually wanted to go, but didn't know if the step-by-step dyno tests are "getting old" or not. Thanks the encouragement!! Merry Christmas 🛐

I actually done the iron horse on an ol 460 a year n half ago but it needs bearings....it's on the back burner....what did you do to there bearing pocket? ...
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 6 күн бұрын
@brandonf1226 I can understand saws getting shoved to the back; I've got a 440 mag that I've had for two years... the only "mod" it has ever received is a new decomp plug to replace a leaking decomp valve! I sure like the Ironhorse pipe and am working on some calculations to "tune" them to specific saws; it's looking promising!! (Not trying to be too remedial here, but not sure yours or future reader's knowledge of the 455) The 455 engine splits around the bearings and is not considered to be as-easy to "cut the base" because the base incorporates 1/2 of the bearing pocket. In order to cut the base (for example) 0.025", the bearing pockets and seal pockets also have to be moved 0.025"... I did that (video upcoming). Thanks for riding along, joining-in, and feeling at-home enough to ask questions. I hope I didn't "talk down" to you in my answer, but wanted to craft an answer that a future reader with less knowledge would understand. Thanks again!!

@diggindiggenit6540 I don't think I've ever showed the 440 on the dyno; it's stock; I would hope the 461 would outdo it! That may make a good first-video episode of getting it running and dyno testing it; the 440Mag will make a good comparison; thanks for the idea!!

If you work out what to do with the 461 let me know. I made the same mistake with one a few months back, only difference was mine came in a box instead of a bucket for 75 bucks. It’s all back together now and runs but I really don’t need another 70ish cc saw. No idea if I should sell it, port it or just run it Next year I’m going to focus on the small cheap stuff because it’s just more fun. I’m not running them for money anymore so it’s not about maximising output so its time to have some fun with whatever I can get cheap and see what I can learn along the way
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 6 күн бұрын
@SawChainTheories I think the small/cheap saw mods/channels have a good chance of attracting beginners (like me) who don't want to start hacking and gouging on a $1500 saw. My 461 direction and yours may be a little different; with all of the comments, I think I'm going to do external mods first (dyno testing each) and then base gasket delete, mild porting, mid level porting, and maybe end up with a race saw. I had considered selling it, but the friends here have begun to make their demands; I better deliver and avoid a riot!!! 😉😂

HELP ! How do you get sthil type wrist pin clips in the ones with no tags , a whole hour of stress , not certain how i did it then . Information for the interested .A new 026 barrel and ( 44 MM piston ) is no longer available hereabouts . A new real stihl MS 260 barrel AND (44.7 MM PISTON ) has the same base holes intake and exhaust position and the same port heights as a 026 . The only difference is the 026 has a tunnel transfer ports and the MS 260 has a open transfer ports . Despite the MS 260 ALEDGED 2mm longer crank throw it fits straight on an runs as good as new .
@HayChaffandSawdust1
@HayChaffandSawdust1 4 күн бұрын
@SepticWhelk Stihl makes a tool for that; the ring is loaded into a tube with a tapered end; there's a rod that pushes the clip thru the tapered end and into the groove... I'm not that kind of guy though! I have a small pair of needle nosed pliers (forceps from dr's ofc work too, but are slightly flimsy.) I grab the clip at one end and start "screwing" the other end into the little divot on the piston (the place that you can stick a pick to get them out); basically I roll them in. Sometimes the started end doesn't want to turn because it's end starts to dig in on the aluminum; if that happens, I walk them in with picks... like putting a tire on a rim. Fair warning... I usually can't record that part... it would be all "beeeeep...beeeeep," as I edited out my coaxing words 😟😟 I am not sure if there were different iterations of the 026 in the 44mm; my transfers on my 44mm were identical to the ones in the AM 44.7 mm ones? I was confident that the 260 top end would fit just fine; glad it did. I guess I just assumed you were going to use the 44.7; can't get 44mm here either. Can't get 034 either; they're all 034Super/036; can't get 029... all are ms390 top ends; aftermarket tends to use the biggest bore offered for each saw chassis and go from there, it seems. Sure happy to hear you got it going! Since were on this particular video; I got the 034 going and dyno tested today. I also got the parts for the 461 and got it running; dyno tomorrow. I can sure get some stuff done on rainy days!!!

@lindachaffins4504 Not 100% sure I understand you comment fully; I don't remember mentioning closing off the stratos... I'm sorry if my reading/comprehension is a a little off... or maybe I misspoke. I built an intake block to fuel the stratos with fuel/air instead of fresh air. The results were not as I expected; that video will be upcoming sooner than later (this out-of-order video jumped 14-15 videos already recorded that need edited and released). If your asking "why" on the intake block, the simple answer would be that I have no experience with them and was curious what would happen; the results surprised me!! @HayChaffandSawdust1

@jeffdillard8789 I think the premise is spot-on about more air; messing with stratos (regular) can change the amount of fresh air bypassing the carb and fuel/air going thru the carb.
