R.O.D.R. in Phoenix has been doing a Local Legend contest since 2022. Over a 2 month period during the height of Phoenix heat, but we do it on a Strava segment that has a significant elevation gain to it. Like 500 ft over .6 miles or something along those lines. The winner gets bragging rights and a spray painted shoe with a sledge hammer sticking out of it.

Just started this podcast but am curious to why this would even be brought up in a running podcast. This sport has problems. And yes, I agree with you 💯

As a rule I don't trust anyone who spends 95% of their time humble bragging. That being said, I'm very excited to follow WSER this year!

Another thought I think you should bring up on the pod: Someone please do a 2025 version of Unbreakable. What an opportunity for a potentially epic story on film.

Nice click bait title :) I’m a big fan of Dave and hoping he makes it a battle to the end. So, so much can go wrong between now and then. I’m just hoping they all make it to the starting line healthy. I’d say there’s a 60-40 chance of that.

Awesome episode guys! Really enjoyed the convo. Per my fueling, I averaged ~40g/hr when I ran 11:19:13. I arrived at that target through metabolic cart tests suggesting my 100 mile intensity would require that number at most. It was a simple glycogen defense model similar to David's but with pretty different dietary inputs on the day to day nutrition. IMO, the bigger potential limiter for my approach on race day is if the day to day fueling limits my ability to do harder sessions to enough of a degree my fitness is lesser than it would with a different approach at 100 mile intensities. I suspect that has been answered as a big yes for shorter endurance races. The tradeoff would be if I switched to moderate/high carb, my race day fueling at the same intensity would likely be closer to 90+ g/hr. I actually think the biggest limiter for me on that day was shoes. I wore the Altra Solstice (before it became a gym shoe). It was about as far from super shoe tech as you can get. Hoping to take another swing this year with premium foams. Like David, I will be finding the exact shoe for me for the specific event. Something you can really only do when exclusivity is removed from the decision making process :)

Why is the Feed paying for David’s KZbin videos? 3 words: Lionel. Fucking. Sanders. Maybe the biggest endurance athlete KZbinr. I never heard of the Feed until Lionel. Do I buy everything from the Feed now? Yes. Am I triathlete? Nope. Let’s pay respect to the legends. Talbot (videographer) and Lionel are GOATs.

The thing about Stian’s situation is not even about whether he did it or not but that it makes athletes not trust the process. The issues with chain of custody, with documentation, with delays in notifying the athlete of the result, in denying the athlete a complete defence, in the event not being able to provide evidence of volunteer training on protocols and the event not showing any duty of care and holding themselves to the same standards of records that the athlete is required to keep. All of these things mean that the case should have been thrown out. As athletes and sponsors and even supporters, we are owed a system that we can trust.

Doping is and always has been rife in running , in the days of micro dosing a runner or cyclist would have to be an idiot to fail a dope test so claiming you passed one or many proves nothing sadly , let’s stop the farcical fairy tail that there’s no doping in Ultras ,

You challenged him to eating contest on your video. You should follow up. I suggest he copy one of Jamil’s best viewed videos or you and Brett do it. Jamil and Skyler went out trying to beat JW segments in AZ and beat one many years ago. They got Jim’s reaction on video. That is the good competition you guys talked about. He is clever to avoid shoe contract. Trail running is not growing fast compared to road running growing at a faster rate. That’s reason no trail shoes in top 10 sellers last year in specialty retail. They don’t care much about trail running yet. We think trail running growing a lot but in running as a whole it is peanuts unfortunately. Road is growing at a faster rate.

Jamil is a great dude. I run and volunteer at Aravaipa races and I’ve been lucky enough to talk to him on a few occasions. The paid staff he has at Aravaipa are super genuine and just nice people. I’m looking forward to my first ultra in May when I’ll be running Elden Crest 39! 🙌. Another great interview Finn.

This chipotle challange with the segments; heard it here for the first time.. Ive skateboarded for 12 years and this segment challange reminded me of street spots I skated.. would be crazy if this grows so big you can get kicked out of a segment by security😂

I was thinking so much about the success of Nick Bare’s channel as I listened to end of this segment and how his personal channel had helped him build his business! I am not really his demographic of customer, but I am intrigued by his channel and really enjoy it. His media presence is a big reason why he is successful!

Cocodona livestream has made Cocodona a must to race. I watch the broadcast every year and think it so unique in the trail space. I ran in 2022 and I think it will be hard to snag a spot from here on out. Big racers are coming out and it’s becoming the most competitive “200” miler in the U.S. My favorite event every year! Great interview! Loved your questions and Jamil’s transparency!

Really enjoyed this podcast! You touched on some great topics related to the Aravaipa history and how Jamil has grown the business. I mostly run Texas races, but it's nice to travel to an Aravaipa race and know there is a level of quality and professionalism you can expect from course marking to aid station food and cleanliness! Their volunteer program is also outstanding, so it's fun to participate that way too. I ran the Tucson road 50k, for a changeup, this past December and loved the new course Jamil spoke of. I look forward to catching up on your vlogs now!

I feel like the Nike moth tech is probably going to be at a better price point than the $140 satisfy is charging. I love Satisfy, but charging $390 for a merino long sleeve is a bit excessive. There aren’t many runners out there able to willingly spend that on one item

I've only followed trail and ultra running since 2018 but in those years no one has done more for the sport (for me and probably most fans) than Jamil. Obviously he lives and breathes the sport, and has created races, youtube shows, and a broadcasting platform that has increased the sport's visibility like no other... but it's the joy, the drive, the low-key humor and the community building that makes what he does so impressive. Seems like such a good dude and I'm always rooting for him and his endeavors. Go get those burritos. Jam Jam

Great conversation! I’ve been in ultra running nearly as long as Jamal (2006 for me) and I used to have a huge stack of the old black & white Ultrarunning mags. There was another magazine called Marathon and Beyond that had long form articles as well as race info. Went under in 2016. It was a great magazine too and maybe something like that could make a comeback for people that like more than an Instagram post.
