My Aussie pup does pretty well tbh. She's 8 months now and she doesn't whine or bark at all when I give her a bath and she'll literally just stand there. She is a little timid at first but once the water hits her she realizes it's not gonna hurt her and she's good. I know you're not supposed to bathe them very often so I tend to only bathe her when she's physically dirty and smelly. Like, my sister and I started going to the dog park once a week with our Aussie siblings (my girl does really well considering how shy she usually is) so if we come back from that and she has mud or dirt on her or smells, etc then I have to bathe her or else she won't be allowed in the house. And she can't stay outside. And we go out to the trail once and a while so if she gets dirty, etc then it's bath time. Otherwise I give her a dry bath, brush her and she's good. My sister on the other hand never bathes either of her dogs. Her Aussie is... I wanna say a little heifer, even though she says that's normal for male Aussies. I've yet to see an Aussie dog that thick. His fur is so rough and gritty that you can tell he's never been brushed or bathed. My baby on the other hand has gotten compliments on her fur. It's soft, she has a shiny coat and it's clean. Our Aussies are a medium size breed. I'm 5'3 and she's knee level I think. The only issues I've had with my dog is potty training (which she seems to be fully trained now. I hope) and eating. My sister's dog will eat four cups of dog food a day and mine will eat 1cup, maybe 2 cups. But she's so obsessed with human food, which I try not to give her any of. I made it clear when I bought her I didn't want her to have any but family will be family...🙄 My mom is obsessed with making sure kids and animals eat. My dog is taller for her gender and size class but a little on the leaner side. She looks like a healthy Aussie. She is very hyper and loves to run around. Her name is Bailey and her brother is Loki. Her brother has a condition known as pika and I'm so glad mine doesn't. Her Aussie nearly died a few weeks ago from something he ate and needed emergency surgery. My baby is a good girl.

Everybody on this page needs to talk to a Veterinarian instead of using google haha-- The truth is you can cut it if you want to cut it. Some people don’t prefer too because Aussies have unique skin features. But their hair will grow back normally.. There is no research that says otherwise.

You can use a comb cut.I use a #0 back or a number 1 back comb cut. I prefer an Andis 2 speed. Wash before you cut. Smooth like butter. Normally you don't cut the second coat unless severe matting.Some cases seen it you cut the second under coat messes the dogs hair up. May never grow back right. Do your research. Don't cut their second coat if double coated. Huskys, poms, Aussies or German Shephersds

There is a lot of misinformation on this thread. You CAN shave an Aussie all the way down. I just saw a professional groomer do it bec the dog lives in Texas. She used a size 7 blade throughout the upper body but she didn't say what size blades she used for the rest. She is called My Favorite Groomer and I have watched her for many years. She's on youtube. I also have learned to shave a Shih Tzu from watching her and he had a double coat.
@KKnight74883 жыл бұрын
You never shave a double coat! The topcoat protects the undercoat and the undercoat protects the skin and regulates their body temperature. Whether its hot or cold. So the undercoat acts like a filter. Brush and clean their coat and it will work properly to protect their skin and regulate body temperature. Shaving them messes up how their coat is supposed to function. So brush, bathe, brush some with it damp, dry really well and brush some more. At least every 4-6 weeks. It removes the dead hair, especially when their blowing their coat, keeps their undercoat “or filter” clean and mat free. You can do their sanitary area, pads, tweek the legs. Shaving them can ruin their coat and even make it come back thicker. This applies to all double coated dogs. Btw…..check out “go groomer” . She’s all about educating, especially pet owners who want to groom their own fur babies.

I personally wouldn't recommend shaving unless ur dog has certain issues like my dog. While shaving them won't overheat them, it can damage their skin really bad if they're outdoor dogs or outside a lot since their skin isn't made for that direct sunlight, it mostly depends on where u live and how long they're outside for. Plus, shaving doesn't always guarantee the fur to grow back the same, thier fur has water resist and cooling properties that aren't guaranteed to work the same if if cut it. Although one of my aussie had to be shaved bc he was attacked by a stray cat and got a skin infection all throughout his back and it had to be shaved. Now his fur refuses to grow back properly and its very patchy

Everyone is pushing this agenda how you should be charged for a crime if you buzz your Aussies hair. And when I say buzz I am talking about using clippers with a 3/4 inch attachment. People act like their google research is the word of god, and how aussies should never be buzzed. I believe their double coat is important for protection and thermodynamics, but that doesn’t mean you can’t alter its length to improve your dogs quality of life. Now I am open to change my mind if someone can show me the actual science to prove me wrong. I travel around the country so I have had a couple different vets I have seen, and each of them told me it was safe to use clippers on my Aussie, they did however say not to clip below half an inch, which is reasonable. I live in Florida right now , and when I take my dog to the groomer and they give the “standard Aussie cut,” which in my opinion is barely cutting any hair at all, when we go outside to run around and play in the field, she is only active for MAYBE 10 minutes before she is miserable and clawing to go back inside due to the heat. On the other hand, when I use my clippers and give her a fresh SHORT cut, when we go outside she is running around and playing in the field with me for nearly an hour before the heat finally starts to become too much (and we try to avoid direct sun as best as we can by staying closer to the tree line). In the summertime I take my dog outside to run around, play, and release all that Aussie energy for about one hour at a time, and I do this 2-3x/day. I take her once in the early morning, again when I get home from work, and then every night we go out before bedtime and I try to tire her out for a good 30 minutes at least. My dog functions 10x better with short hair compared to when it’s long, and I will continue to keep my dogs hair short as long as it keeps her healthy and happy. Now if someone has scientific evidence to back up the claim regarding the negative effects of using clippers on an Aussie, please send me that information so I can consider it. And when I say evidence please don’t send me random googled websites that have no real explanation regarding how and why cutting short ruins the coat, I want real scientific evidence cited from professional scientific organizations, or at least professionals educated in veterinary science. Please understand my post if friendly and I hope everyone can come together on this topic so we can all get accurate information for our Aussies!

Diana Buarque DONT shave your aussie. Well it is too late now. Many groomers refuse to shave huskies collies aussies etc for a reason. While it may look like it grows back the same to you- there are layers in a dogs coat you can’t see, and it does not grow back the same. Double coated breeds fur while thick actual helps them with the summer sun and regulated their body temp. Shaving won’t necessarily cool them off- just give them the chance of getting very easy and extreme sunburn.

No, no, no! The only reason she cant withstand the heat is because you wrecked her coat! Look up what really happens when you shave a double coated dog! Please! And do stop doing it! Find other ways to cool her since you've long ruined her own cooling system. Check out the animal scholar's video on aussie coats, she explains it really well!
@shayrose77054 жыл бұрын
While thick their coats actually help them with the sun and help regulate their body temp. Shaving won’t make them cooler- just expose their skin to the sun and make it so they easily get burnt.
@vizziddog59045 жыл бұрын
Shaving a double coated dog damages there coat and actually makes them hotter because there top coat usually has the breeze get down to the undercoat and when not the undercoat is forced closed preventing breezes and trapping heat
@micheljansen854 жыл бұрын
Yeah, i don't believe that. Thermodynamics and looking at creatures around equatorial regions lead me to believe that at the very least it's helpfull to shave. Especially when your dog is an avid swimmer like my aussie.
@shayrose77054 жыл бұрын
Michel Jansen it’s terrible. It does damage their coat. It upsets me when people say “ I have shaved mine it’s the same “ you can not physically see the layers in their coat. Their coat actually helps regulate heat and keeps them from getting sunburnt.

Aussies have a built in cooling system in their fur. If you shave them you are getting rid of their cooling system. Now trimming is much better than shaving your Australian Shepherd. When you trim them you just get rid of the excess fur on the top. Correct me if I'm wrong in some parts, but I have an Australian Shepherd and I trim her fur in the summer.

No. The only reason they overheat is because when you shave them, once the hair grows back, it becomes more and more dense, and traps heat.
